Middleweight puncher Gary Lockett has been installed as WBO number one - and mandatory challenger to king of the division Kelly Pavlik.
Currently WBU champion, Lockett, 30, has won 29 of his 30 fights, 20 by stoppage.
A long-term fixture in the WBO top 10, Lockett now finds himself in a position to challenge Pavlik.
The American won the WBO and WBC world titles when he defeated Jermain Taylor at the end of September.
With the victory, he is now considered the best in the world at 160 pounds.
Pavlik, 32-0, is due to meet Taylor in a rematch at the start of the year, so Lockett may have to wait before he gets his chance.
And if Pavlik steps up to super-middleweight, then Lockett would be in a position to fight for the vacant title.
But if the pair did meet, it would give Lockett the chance to add to British boxing's recent success, with Joe Calzaghe and David Haye winning double-world titles in recent weeks.

I recently spoke to someone in the Calzaghe stable who said that Pavlik would vacate rather than face Lockett.

Ha ha... yes, and it will probably be Joe Calzaghe doing the accusing in his weekly column in the local rag.

I honestly beleive Lockett could be seriously hurt (if they ever fought) and I dont think Pavlik is that great
remember what that journeyman, Tsarenko did to him

Pavlik would put him away before he could get badly hurt .

"For me the chance to fight Bernard Hopkins is appealing because it looks good on the old CV, he might be old but he's a tough guy and a lot of Americans will be sceptical about my chances in his own backyard."
What's wrong with that?:D

Pavlik drops the WBO title and then Locket wins it and fights bums for several years. Sound like a couple of other fighters we know?

rememeber though, if Pavlik drps the belts and moves up to 168, it's not for a superfight, nor it it due to trouble making weight....it's because he's scared of the fearsome Gary Lockett.

remember what that journeyman, Tsarenko did to himTsarenko gave him one of the worst beat downs iv ever seen. Lockett was never the same again and became very gunshy in his following fights. As much as i like Gary his not world class. If he ever meets Pavlik the result will be VERY VERY bad for him.Other than a nice dig his not got much else.

I give him massive amount of credit for winning the rematch though. It took balls to even get back in the ring with Tsarenko let alone beat him after the pummeling he got first time around.
But you're right, he's not world class.
Then again, Pavlik ain't all that.

Look at all the guys around the top twenty rankings in each division at middle weight and you can not pick many you can really rate as desering a chance at a title shot or to be that good at all really. Even the more recognised names are either going down hill or habe not done too much either.

Then again, Pavlik ain't all that.Maybe the rematch stunk and Lockett was lucky to scrape the hometown decision.Remember the first fight was a split decision!?!? As for Pavlik as much as i like the boy he is alot of hype. The kid has great hands and goof fittness and will go far as a middleweight. But his not in that elite upper tier of the sport.Either way his way too much for a guy like Gary.
