Definite boxer-puncher with a vastly underrated defense. Far from a classical boxer, i'd call his style when boxing [I]herky jerky[I]. Underrated tactician, with Eddie Futch playing no small part in that. I tell you, Spink style in many bouts at 175 was to come out lazy and slow starting, get caught by a hard punch at sometime, wake up, then go B-A-N-G. His overhand right is immediately comparable to Hearns for pure power at 175, and his left hook or even uppercut could also take you out in a single delivery. I bracket Spinks and Foster as the hardest hitting 175's of the more modern era. Mustafa is close but didn't stretch his talent and show it as completely as these two. Moorer's short stint at 175 is power noted, but i'd have liked to have seen more.

Michael Spinks is so great, him and pernell would beat so many people head to head, its not even funny, they are my favourites.

Spinks's left uppercut on Marvin is my choice as the greatest uppercut ever thrown.

Spinks is definately underrated, he's one of the top tier ATGs at 175 IMO.

a pretty underrated jab i think..Not to anybody who watched him turn Ramon Ranquello into a bloody mess with it.
To me, he looked a little like a string marionette in his movements, but his right uppercut off the ropes nearly took Jerry Celestine's head off (at least one ringside writer described it as sounding like a shotgun blast). Multiple hooks turned Mustapha Wassaja into a bobblehead doll. He only needed a single right cross to pitch Vonzell Johnson out.
Looking at his record, it's astounding to me that the only clean countout win he produced against world class opposition was when he demolished Marvin Johnson. That left might have killed a lesser adversary though, so it's probably just as well he didn't do somthing like that more often. Legitimate single punch kayo power in each hand.
It's somewhat overlooked that peak Tyson was the only one to legitimately knock him down, and that he did it for the first time with a bodyshot, not a punch to the chin. Also, it might be worth considering that he was not rendered unconscious by the final blow which finished him. His true ability to take a punch at the light heavyweight level was never measured, and perhaps he was impervious against other sub 175 pounders. As lanky as he was, he had good physical strength as a LHW.

I think the opposite. Though that doesn't mean he wouldn't KO RJJ at some point.
Too right, I struggle to see Jones going 15 rounds without being jinxed.;)

RJJ has the speed..but michael was quick himself..his style is something RJJ probably never seen...he probably would be jinxed...he has a suspect chin i think...13 KO....

Spinks has never seen anything liek Roy Jones either...
Both of them are candidates for weirdest styles ever.....

Second best p4p fighter of the decade behind Hagler of course and second best light heavy behind Roy Jones Jr.
Amazingly enough, his best overall performance came as a heavyweight against Larry Homes which inspired Larry to bitterly announce "marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap".
Fantastic fighter:
