View Full Version : Calzaghe and Woods negotiations under way

"He's gone!"
11-20-2007, 10:38 AM
The BBC web site is running the headline "IBF Light-heavy weight champion Clinton Woods is negotiating to fight Joe Calzaghe." There's no attached story but a promise of "more soon."

This fight could give calzaghe a title and set up hopkins a a retirement fight. Less dangerous than Dawson and it's gonna get less US interest if it goes ahead.

I should be given credit for predicting this would happen. Anyone?

After hearing PBF trumpet the "if it don't make dollars, it don't make sense" mantra ad nauseum, does it occur to anyone that an all-UK fight might do better than a Hopkins fight for Joe? I'm not really a fan of his, but it is possible this is partially a financial decision. It's not like Hopkins-Wright was a mega-fight.

...and that $16mil shit? pleeeeeeease. floyd ain't even getting that for the hatton fight, are people trying to suggest b-hop-joe will make more than hatton-floyd?

I dont even know where that came from. I definitely haven't found a reliable source that confirms it.

Hopkins mentioned the yankee stadium as a venue, would it get filled? Don't know much about Hopkins fan base and i'm not sure you'd get as many Calzaghe fans crossing the atlantic as Hatton gets.

I know I'd come up from Philly. But I don't know anybody else who would

Honestly, the fight might not even sell out Boardwalk Hall, nevermind Yankee Stadium. I'm almost sure Hops-Tarver didn't sell out. And Tarver was, for a while, a way bigger name in the USA than Calzaghe ever has been.

This is HORRIBLE fucking news!

Calzaghe should ONLY be taking to Hopkins, RJJ, or the Pavlik-Taylor II winner...

RJJ?

I can't bear the thought of this fight.

Calzaghe should fight Hopkins in the States even if it doesn't make him as much money as the Woods fight in (probably) Cardiff.

After the US$16 offer from GBP what excuse will Falzaghe have of fighting Clitoris

what $16mil offer? mayweather is making less for fighting hatton? you think calzaghe-hopkins will rake in more money than hatton-mayweather? are you that fucking stupid?

...or Chad Dawson.

Woods should fight Glen Johnson instead (for the nth time:yep until a clear and dominating winner is established).

Joe has mentioned only boxing for a year more, which is only one or two more fights. This fight would make him a champ at LH then he could face the champ. Can't see fights with Pavlik/Taylor being made as he's moving up. Would people actaully be happy with a RJJ fight?

Yankees stadium seats about 60,000 for a basball game. I imagine for boxig with the ring being so much smaller and seating on the field it would be close to 65-70K. And I can tell you one thing. IN order to fill that up they would need to offer seats at $10 and comp flights from the UK

So you admit the guy is not that great after all-how come no one wants to watch him fight apart from his grandmother

what i am saying is, is that the 16mil offer is bullshit. if you really think they're offering joe that amount to come to america and fight hopkins then you're a bigger idiot than i thought.

oh, and 50,000 came to see him fight kessler, not bad huh :hey

at least people don't walk out of his fights, did you see FM-baldomir?

I have no interest in this fight. I want Calzaghe-Hopkins or Calzaghe-Dawson.

Bodysnatcher
11-20-2007, 11:22 AM
Thing is, Frank ****** knows he can pack 50,000 into the Millenium Stadium by putting him up against anyone willing to fight there, eg, Manfredo.

Calzaghe's star is high, Woods won't be a tough negotiator, Woods is a Light Heavyweight Champion and they were going to fight before, until Joe's fragile hands mucked it up.

Unfortunately, it's a fight that makes a lot of sense from a financial perspective.

Most American fight fans will mock Calzaghe for taking it, though, and I can't say they'll be totally wrong.

Doesn't seem like a legacy fight to me, although becoming a two weight champion is nothing to be sniffed at.

Cal vs Woods would have to be a risk/reward/timing/stay busy option setting up a larger fight.

Woods while being a decent journeyman isnt on Calzaghes level. A worthy LHW fight but not THE TYPE of fight Calzaghe should be in right now, UNLESS it's part of a larger plan.

The 16million offer was a buyout offer to Calzaghe and ****** so that GBP would have sole promotion rights over Calzaghe essentially buying him from ******. 16million to Joe with an additional 2mill to ******.

Who knows the rest of the details

Why is everyone saying this fight is shit? Clinton Woods is a good fighter, he's not a journeyman he's the light-heavyweight champion ffs!

Infact, I reckon Woods might give Calzaghe a better fight than Hopkins, purely because Woods is capable of matching Calzaghe's workrate, something that Hopkins would never have been able to do in his prime 10 years, let alone aged 43.

The only thing Hopkins offers in this fight is a name, and the worst thing is most people here KNOW that and STILL want him to fight b-Hop.

Apparently the Jones fight entirely summerises the entirety of Clinton Woods career.
Also do any Hopkins fans really want their man to fight Calzaghe at this stage of his career? Surely he's too old now and will only get a kicking.

You cats are crazy!

Work rate, work rate, work rate is all you can say.
Slap, slap, slap, is all Joe can do.
If HOP slapped like a woman, he could throw 40-50 punches a round also.

When Calfaghe gets in the ring with an A-level elite we'll see how well he maintains this slapping work rate. :yep
Yes because Hopkins hits hard doesn't he? The last person he knocked out was a welterweight, 3 years ago

Calzaghe hasn't hit hard since he hurt his hand, but still enough to hurt Kessler and Lacy

TFFP
12-23-2007, 06:37 PM
The operative word in your example was "hurt" which is not a KNOCK OUT, or even a TKO.
Yes, a slap can sting, but it won't bother HOPKINS as much as those accurate and SOLID punches are gonna hurt Calfaghe. :yep

Hopkins is neither a Kessler or a Lacy.
And the operative word there is "solid", and even in capitals it doesn't add any weight to your argument

Hopkins solid punches havn't looked like knocking a fighter out, since 3 years ago against a welter weight

So realistically, his punches are going to do nothing more than hurt a strong SMW, if he even bothers to throw any. His prime weapon is his head, to be honest

bhop is under estimating joe and he knows it!! it be a great fight but JC to win UD. I really do not think bhop can apply any tactics which joe hasn't seen, joe is so adaptable in the ring. Also in the welsh papers joe has stated he tends to puch within himself sometimes due to his injury to his hand so those knockout punches in the past are not his main weapen these days.

bhops head is his main weapon to upset his apponents game so they expose themselves, and he willl try to do this again the racist b%%%%%%

Damn!!! Make the fight in the uk and sellout a 70,000 seat arena. Make the fight in the US and sellout a 15,000 seat casino. Seems simple to me!!

Calzaghe has a huge fanbase in his country. Hopkins, not so much.

Calzaghe should fight Hopkins first in the USA. Then fight Woods in Cardiff, then retire. Hopefully he could do that by the end of 2008, and who knows he may even fight again in early 2009.
