On a point spread, the favorite has to win by at least the number with the negative sign next to it.

So in other words, Dallas had to win by 7 points to "cover the spread" of 6.5 - so that if you subtract 6.5 points from their score they still win.

In this case 100 minus 6.5 equals 93.5 - that's less than the Thunder's score. So Dallas failed to cover the spread as the favorites.

Conversely - for the Thunder +6.5 to win, it just means that if you add 6.5 to the Thunder's score they would win. In this case 96 + 6.5 = 102.5...more than the Mav's score.
