With only 34 fights and yet he's obviously a shell of his former self and is retired. How does this happen? I mean, 50 years ago 29 was considered old for a fighter but that was usually because a 29 year old fighter in the 50s usually had at least 50-60 fights, sometimes even more than that. Did Vargas just have a crazy lifestyle that took a toll on his body or what?

I believe so I mean I saw some pictures of him when he was absolutely obese around 280lbs I think that is just insane, he obviously took roids too and he had a crazy lifestyle as well. Some of his fights were wars and he took hard shots, traded with Trinidad, DLH, Mosley, all of it took toll on him. He is a grandpa in the ring.

yeah roids took a toll plus he had gotten wrecked quite a few times .....

Steroids, out-of-the-ring lifestyle, and the wars he has been in have all taken their toll.

I never knew he lead a bad life style, before the Trinidad fight he was to active to really go crazy like that. But I must admit he looked like he was in he's 40's in the fight, and he didn't carry that weight well at all, he had a gut any everything :patsch.

Yeah i guess that makes sense. But Gatti had a pretty wild life outside of the ring and some wars inside of it and had a longer career than Vargas. And Jake LaMotta was known to not take proper care of himself between fights and had 106 bouts.

Trinidad happened.

Man just look at the 12th round, the last right hand that Vargas absorbed before the fight was called.

You guys kill me. You're all missing the obvious. The man fought Tito, Campas, Wright, Quartey, Marquez by his 21st fight. That resume is enough to age anyone. He also fought DLH , Mosley, Castillejo, rivera and Mayorga. His resume shames most of his peers. Add to that the roids and the partying, what else can you expect.

You are missing the Obvious.. After Tito...Vargas was done or should I say never the same

How does this happen?

Tito happened.

I really believe it all started with that left hook 20 seconds into that first round.

Ive never seen a guy who weighed 175+ with such skinny arms, if you watch the fight Vargas has a big barrel shapped mid-section with skinny little twig arms, the guy has put on 0 muscle. He's physique at 154 used to be pretty impressive :patsch

WTF, I alluded to that at the beginning of my post:patsch

another idiot who wants to argue just for the hell of it.

Weight draining! This guy would baloon up to well past 220 lbs then drain for fights, that aint healthy, even his facial muscles looked drained when he fought mosley. if he would have kept himself in shape, who knows how good he could have gone on to become?

Duran said the same shit about himself.

Chimba, your illigetimate sons are being pimp slapped around in the other Pac thread.

Maybe you could help them, or put them in their place. Whatever a good father should do, you know.

for me,he was never that good anyway,to go with the beatings.its harder to hold off father time when your nothing special.think of the punishment hearns took from leonard, hagler and barclay but still went on at a high level. talent can compensate for aging(duran, holy, hops, shane etc).but vargas didnt have much to fall back on.
furthermore once your a world champ, you have to fight the elite.he fought tito in his 21st fight.tough,he didnt have to.dont be world champ then.
if he'd fought tito, oscar and shane at any time he'd have been trashed.
not a bad fighter, but never saw him as special at elite level.

Vargas met his demise in three steps:

1. Lived a criminal life which forced his management into cashing him out against Trinidad sooner than was best for him.

2. The Trinidad beating, followed by the DLH beating.

3. The bodily abuse, illegal substances, weight gain between fights, etc.

Nothing to do with Juan Diaz, actualy more to do with David Diaz being justified as an opponent over JMM, Juan Diaz, or Guzman.

this is what happens to fighter that don't have any defense and give the fighting fans what they want Brawls , you end up like vargus cook ,roasted and done at 29.
considering he was done 6 years ago at 23

David Diaz is no joke I hope PAC doesn't get muscled around.

I really think that Diaz has a shot here. PAC can be wild at times..hes got alot of flaws

This is the best summary of all. I'd just add that his criminal life was ultimately responsible for his wrecked back which led to the weight gain, balance problems and beatings he later received. It amazes me how many guys from the hood never are able to appreciate the fact that they have risen above their upbringing once they achieve real success and it ends up destroying what made them special and able to rise above it in the end.

Sad really when you think about it. With the slowed speech, enormous weight gain, and what seem to be overtly poor investments, I hope Vargas doesn't end up like a lot of other post-retirement boxing tragedies.

Yep. And mark my words, if Pavlik doesn't develop a defense he will be on the same train in about two years. For all of the criticism Mayweather and Hopkins get for their "boring" styles, neither guy will end up eating out of a straw at 60.

I think Tito is the one who really ruined Vargas careers.

true, but at world level youre likely to fight an elite fighter at some point.
tito didnt ruin oscar,b hop and winky(i know he was past it by then, but thats not my point),but did ruin joppy, reid and vargas.
they were nothing special, the first 3 were.

Yup , this is exactly true. I want to add to that that this is the reason Cuba's team almost never let guys younger then 20 participate at the Olympics. Your body is growing untill your 21th birthday.

This happens with many athletes, not only boxers. TOO much TOO early

Yeah, though I'd say the second one was more of a factor than the other two. Also, he messed up his back a long time ago and I think that brought him down a few levels.

he foughtg the best way too quickly at 21 he was champoin....which is awful.

he was 17 when oscar and tito were world champions.

good fighter but he was just put in with the best with his balls out aggresion.

i think he was just paraded as an elite fighter wich he wasnt as got pushed into fights that he couldnt win.
