I’m going to fight Georges St. Pierre on December 29th. I’ve got a couple reasons why I’ve made this decision and I will share those at a later time. I’ve asked for this to be for an interim title and if Matt Serra can’t fight in a year, then this would just be the title fight; but I don’t know if that is going to happen right now. I will keep you all posted.
-Matt
EDIT: This WILL BE for the interim title, so it will be a 5-round fight. -Matt

What looked like a disaster.. turns into a MEGA FIGHT for the UFC.

I'm happy to see this fight, but this still kind of sucks.

I would really like to see Serra vs. Hughes. Serra is less of an athelete than is GSP, and I would liket to see how he would match up against Hughes. If GSP wins, which I'd predict, I don't know it Serra and Hughes happens. GSP vs. Serra II probably would. I'd like to see that as well, just not now.

This is an amazing fight. Time to end the trilogy before both go for the title. Amazing. I just hope Serra doesn't beat the winner cos Hughes and GSP are amazing fighters. Time for GSP to comeback with a vengence. Winner of this trilogy and Serra fight is best Welter ever me thinks.

can't wait, I'm surprised Hughes took this fight...he better have a different game plan this time around....it's possible GSP could retire Hughes if he should give him another beating.

Honesty if Hughes gets whipped real bad I could see him going up to 185 to maybe take a crack at Anderson. At least he's alluded to such a possibilty before if Rich was to lose their rematch.

that wouldn't be a bad idea.....his wrestling ability is nulled by GSP, but I'm sure he would have a decent shot at getting Anderson off his feet. If Lutter can get Silva down I'm sure Hughes wold have a shot.

GSP will be the recognized P4P #1 by this time next year. After he beats Hughes and then destroys Serra, I'd like to see him move up and challenge Anderson. Thats if Anderson is still champ, which is unlikely being that Hendo is moving down.

This makes me really respect Hughes. He is 1-1 with GSP and doesn't need him at this moment. Hell, no one needs any of GSP at any point in their career. Hughes is a ballsy man, as is GSP. They are just true fighters who want to be the best.

I am not happy with this. I think that Serra knew this is what would happen. It is obvious that the UFC would look to put this fight together... and I think that Serra counted on that as a way to get out of fighting Hughes. One last way to try and get under Hughes' skin without having to fight him, himself. Serra is counting on GSP beating Hughes, and then being able to fight against GSP thinking that he has some sort of mental advantage over GSP.

I disagree. I don't think Serra is the type. Herniated disk is no joke. You make it sound as if he wanted to get injured.

Why would anybody RATHER fight GSP then Hughes? I don't think this was planned or easily accepted by Serra. I think Serra most likely knows he has little chance of beating either one, but I'm sure he feels his chances are better against Hughes. Hughes or St. Pierre are going to come in seriously focused and really look to blow Serra out. He's not in a good position, he has possibly the 2 best welterweights ever NEEDING to beat him to save face  I think he should retire on top :D

Dana said "Matt you need to fight GSP, our last few shows sucked ass and people are noticing""

Matt "Fuck man"

Dana "You owe me, do this for Lorenzo"

Serra: "you guys are unbelievable!"

Nah. Serra didn't do this "on purpose" or any bullshit like that. Why would he? This puts him in a bad position no matter what. Besides, I think he really thinks he can beat Hughes and wants to prove it. Just my impression.

By the way, does anyone else think this may be a little too balsy/arrogant on GSP's part? Taking such a huge fight with only four weeks to train for it doesn't seem like the smartest choice...

I wouldn't wory about GSP's shape, he trains full time so that shouldn't be an issue....besides he asked for the fight so i'm sure he's ready

If GSP hadn't lost to Serra, I would be worrying. But I really think he is still eating some humble pie and wouldn't do anything to further jeopardize all he's accomplished. I think he is still in the "I'm gonna destroy everyone until I'm back to where I was...." mode and is probably in better shape now then he was when he fought Kos and Hughes for that matter.

GSP is the best fighter in the division, maybe the organization and maybe the sport. He will beat Hughes again and then Serra. Then it is either a champ vs champ with Penn or a champ vs champ with Silva :yep

GSP trains all year round. Having 4 weeks to gear his training towards fighting Hughes is no big deal. Hughes is doing the same thing. He was also in training, but now has 4 weeks to gear his training towards fighting GSP. They already fought twice, so it isn't as if they don't know each other well, and haven't gameplanned on fighting each other before. Both of these guys are ALWAYS training, and always in shape... so that part won't effect this at all. I would think if anything it hurts Hughes more than GSP. You know damn well that Hughes was on fire, and couldn't wait to fight Serra, AND to get that title back. Now, he has an interm title fight, against GSP. I would think that is a bit of an emotional letdown, that Hughes will have to recover from. GSP on the other hand is sitting around training his ass off trying to get back into the title hunt, and this oppurtunity falls in his lap... he will be amped up.

You mean for the title even if GSP beats Hughes or just after GSP beats them both?

Im saying its a profitable fight for Dana. They have a Reality-TV rivalry so people know them well. They know they hate each other and they are both at least top10 fighters in the world.

Obviously its not gona happen right away if Hughes loses next fight. I don't know the scenario in which Hughes and Serra meet but it will happen.

Yeah, I agree. If it makes money, it will happen. That's one nice thing about the UFC.

The only problem I see is if GSP beats Hughes and then Serra beats GSP again. Then Hughes would almost certainly have to win another fight agasint a contender to get a shot at Serra, espacially in that stacked division.

It should just be GSP beats Hughes, then Serra in Canada, then after THAT (which should be next summer I guess) Serra and Hughes would fight. I wonder if they'll make them do another round of TUF to re-hype it to the level it's at now?
