Personally I don’t like watching Ricky Hatton fight.
I find his hold and punch style very boring.
However there are several things that he does very well, and you have to give him credit where it’s due.
Mayweather is by far the superior boxer, but styles make fights and Hatton has the perfect style to beat Mayweather, Mayweather’s style will make it impossible for him to beat Ricky Hatton, here’s why.
The thing that Mayweather fears most is looking bad in the ring; he truly is the pretty boy, Hatton’s style will make just about anyone look bad, your not going to beat him if your worried that you might not look good in doing so. Hatton is a rough fighter that doesn’t care if his hair gets messy in a fight. Nodu showed that the way to beat Mayweather is to rough him up. If Mayweather fights like he did against Ndou he will not last very long against Hatton, when Ndou tied up Mayweather, Floyd looked confused. Mayweather, while a good inside fighter, does not fight well in the clinch, against Hatton he will be in the clinch for about 2 minutes and 59 seconds of every round. In the first few rounds, Mayweather will try to feint Hatton out of position, he will be effective at this for awhile, but after Hatton figures out what Mayweather’s doing, he will simply keep moving forward, smothering Floyd and making him look bad by disrupting his timing and not giving him the room that he need’s to shine, Mayweather doesn’t need much room, all he needs is three or four inches, but he needs both hands free so that he can pivot from side to side, giving himself the space he needs to fire short hard shots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mayweather throw a punch while he has one hand tied up, when he feels his opponents hands on him; he immediately looks to free himself and stops punching, or, later in the fight, falls into a clinch, Mayweather is not strong enough to shake off Hatton for 12 full rounds. If Mayweather gets in his rhythm, he is unstoppable, Hatton will not give him the time and space he needs to set the pace. Hatton looks to back his opponents into the ropes; this is where he can to do most of his damage. Mayweather’s style makes it easy to achieve this; he backs himself into the ropes where he slips and slides, making his opponent miss while countering. In the DeLaHoya fight, Mayweather backed himself into a corner, in the first minute of the first round, without DeLaHoya throwing a punch.
Mayweather moves very well when you allow him to dictate, but when you rush him he backs straight up with his left hand across his middle and his right tucked into his left shoulder, in a totally defensive position and not in a position to punch, he waits to roll to his left, or create distance with his hip and make you reach over the top, so he can counter, this works against a boxer but Hatton’s not a boxer, he’s a brawler and will just grab on and pound away, turning Mayweather’s insides to mush.
Mayweather fights in sprits; Hatton is a little like Henry Armstrong in that he never seems to stop punching.
Mayweather is not a huge puncher, but he wears you down with an accumulation of punches.
Hatton is a big puncher, but more importantly he breaks your spirit with his nonstop assault.
Mayweather looks to take your heart by making you miss and frustrating you. Hatton won’t care if he’s not hitting anything early, as long as his hands are moving and he’s coming forward, he’s happy.
Mayweather likes to stand in front of a guy and roll from side to side, to avoid punches and create countering opportunities, this works well against someone that’s trying to punch you in the head, but if the UFC has shown us anything, it’s that the way to beat a slick boxer that stands in front of you and makes you miss, is to grab him and throw him around. That’s Hatton’s game plan to a tee.
When in his defensive position, Mayweather leans back, with all his weight on his right foot, this will be Hatton’s signal to rush in and do his thing, By coming forward when Floyds in this position he will give Mayweather no choice but to lean, or move, further back, Hatton will simply grab him with his right hand pinning him on the ropes, not allowing Mayweather to turn back to him and keeping him out of position, all the while he will be pounding with his left hand. Mayweather will have no answer for this kind of attack.
Mayweather throws one punch at a time, to beat Hatton he will have to be busier than Hatton and back him up. This is not the way Floyd fights. He has trouble sustaining forward movement; he counts on his opponent coming to him, or at least following him around. Allowing Hatton to come straight at you, will prove fatal no matter how slick you are, if you don’t move side to side under pressure, Mayweather moves straight back when rushed.
More than likely this will be a frustrating fight to watch, with Floyd trapped on the ropes and Hatton trying his best to turn it into a hockey fight.
We know that Floyd can box, but if he ever meets Hatton in the ring, we will find out if he can fight.

Although I dont feel you give Hatton enough credit for his boxing brain in the ring and how he 'works out' opponents whilst in there, I do think your summary of how the fight could potentially go is close to how I see it going, the other way is PBF somehow manages to keep Hatton on the outside and scores a UD.

Mayweather can fight. Go watch his matches with Jesus Chavez, Emmanuel Agustus... He fought Castillo twice. Hatton brings nothing to the table that Floyd has not seen. If Collazo can lift Hattons head up in the air with shots I am sure Floyd can again send Hatton back down after his 2nd unsucessful try at welterweight

Ok...you have some good points but saying Maywhether just moves back when rushed is obsurd. We all know he has some of the best footwork if not the best in todays ring. Another thing is like you said PBF like opponents comming in and thats what Hatton does come forward....Hatton has not seen the hand speed nor accuracy of a PBF and bullying in only means PBF throws that lunging right which will move Hatton around a little giving Floyd time to either throw one or two more punches....Look at what he did to ODH....he through so many lunging rights which kept ODH off balance.
You said your self PBF like fighters coming forward...Hatton is a good fighter but his toughest opposition were Zu..past his prime, Collazo which he got whipped really, and Castillo another aging fighter considereed past his prime. Floyd has fought fighters just as fast as him and won, fought tough fighters who come forward and won(take the two Castillo fights in his prime), Floyd STUDIES his fighters and a fighter like Hatton is just too basic and simple to plan for and break down...this will not be exciting more like PBF vs ODH a lot of hype fans are happy to see it...BUT....Floyd will out box Hatoon way to easy because he is simply superior in too many areas, actually the only edge i see for Hatton is punch power which does give him a "PUNCHERS CHANCE" and then the fight will be at 147.....Hatton can't perform at that weight....he tried and looked horrible against Collazo he should have stayed at that weight to grow into it now he has hurt himself by going down for a while now he will have to go up.....this will prove disaturous for Hatton!

Great first thread but you must not fall into the trap of forgetting that pbf to alot of people on this site is the greatest fighter to have ever lived and is indestructable. Plus Hatton the Fatton is deemed another european joke who is lucky to be even be mentioned in the same breath as him.
I liked your hypothasis but pbf is great at figuring out fighters and is very strong and hatton has been in some terrific fights.

Agreed. Mayweather may not be the most exciting guy around, but he definitely can fight. It's not like he doesn't throw punches. People just get frustrated because he is so evasive. But hell, that's what a really good boxer does. He hits, and doesn't get hit in the process.
I don't see him having a lot of trouble with Hatton. Granted, Hatton's strategy will be to maul and smother him. But, Floyd's fast and slick enough that he should be able to easily outpunch Ricky.
I hope I end up being wrong and the fight is close and competitive, but I don't see it happening.

Excellent first post and excellent analysis...I think Floyd would win, but Ricky does have a style that could beat Mayweather - I honestly believe that.
