When and why was the cruiserweight limit moved from 190 to 200 lbs?

It seemed fairly logical, which is strange for alphabet crap.

It happened about two years ago.

It was done because Heavyweights are getting bigger, so it was considered a way to attract the small heavies to the division....

Of course it never works because normally there is a lot more ££££ or $$$$ in a Heavyweight fight!

I dont really know,but it means that todays heavyweight division wouldnt include dempsey,the rock,fitzimmons and a few other guys of that ilk...

It wasn't clever. It got rid of guys who would be or at least start off as smaller heavies. Quality fighters like Mormeck, Haye, Maccranelli, Bell may be gracing the heavies had they not been given a ten pound breather.

Plus it pushed cruiser and heavy further away from 175s. 25 pounds is too much. 15 pounds for men of that size was ok. I think because of this alot of 175 pounders aren't going north because cruiser is shit and heavyweight is now 25 pounds away. This is changing history because historically most 175s take a stab at heavy.

People met it with indifference because no-one cares about cruiserweights. Personally, I think the current cruiserweight top 5 (Bell, Mormeck, Wilson, Haye and Cunningham) are the most evenly matched and exciting top 5 in any division today. It is true that, were 200 lbs not the limit, we probably wouldn't have most of that top 5 in the cruiserweight division.

I'd ideally like to see the cruiserweight division carved up between the light-heavyweights and the heavyweights. A 185 light-heavyweight limit would populate what has become a very sparse and uninspired class. A lighter heavyweight division might inspire some of the smaller heavyweights to get into a better condition, which will be better for being competitive with the big slugs of the heavyweight division.

The cruiser weight division is rather good these days. Honest. The fights have been great. The effective weight of cruiser weights is now 185-210 pounds. Historically speaking this weight range has produced great fights.

Like other divisions, a man can lose 10 pounds of water weight before the weigh in, and then re-hydrate to his normal weight for fight night.

In essence the new 200 pound cruiser weight limit has given fighters with a natural best weight in the low 200’s a chance to compete against men their own size, and not against 240 pound giants.

Braithwaite's career turned to shit after the change. Mormeck is a small cruiser. He is also a natural LHW and he fought at middle as an amateur. He came at cruiser cause he would have never obtained a chance at LHW. The only french promoter Acaries had the WBA titleholder Girard under contract and he wanted to protect his belt, Mormeck had refused to sign with Acaries and he was a big threat... Mormeck would have destroyed Bruno Girard imo and he would have been a very decent LHW titleholder. Mormeck vs Adamek, Mormeck vs Tarver or Mormeck vs G.Johnson etc. would have been good fights.
