View Full Version : who is the most popular boxer in history

at this present time, i gonna say mike tyson. unfortunately, due to the over exposure of the medie i think his crimes and accomplishments actually eclipses even the likes of ali.
its pretty sad because ali (while he was not perfect) built his reputation by daring to be great and fighting for what he believed in.
maybe some other names; joe louis, ray robinson, ray leonard, oscar dela hoya, george foreman, roberto duran, julio ceasar chavez

Right at this moment in time, I would definitely say Ali.
Certainly not at the time, but he is now!
Wheras Tyson, rightly or wrongly, still has a pretty negative image.

on this board i did a survey on who got them started on boxing and a clear majority of the ESB board members starting watching boxing not because of Ali and Rumble in the Jungle.
they started watching Boxing because of Tyson because most that are here on this board of are a younger generation.
i think it was about 80% answered Tyson got them into boxing.

As it seems to me, some are mixing things up: it's about who is the most widely known, not who is the most loved one.
It is Mike Tyson. He is the most popular in America, Asia, probably Europe. In Africa, it should be Ali by a wide margin. Not sure about Australia, probably Tyson.

Infamous rather than famous maybe!
Ali - and Ali by such a huge difference that nobody has ever reached anything like the same level of popularity world-wide.
Joe Louis would probably be second.

If it is indeed most widely known rather than popular as it says in the thread title, Tyson would be a close seocnd to Ali in terms of world-wide popularity.

I think you're correct to a certain extent. However, if things had have turned out differently for Tyson, he'd have been the most famous sportperson ever.
People seem to forget how the media was extremely fascinated with Tyson, especially when he was champion. It's one thing being popular in your own country, but I remember when Tyson went to Tokyo, Japan to fight Tubbs. He couldn't believe the media was so compelled with his every move. Mike admitted to being a little apprehensive with the situation at the time.

The only reason Tyson is even being considered is because he RECENTLY dominated the sport in terms of popularity. Whenever the young kids weren't introduced because of either Ali or Tyson is when it will be very very clear that Ali outlasts him.

Michael Jordan?
Boxing is a much more globalised sport than Basketball. To people around the world, Tyson or Ali was the baddest man on the planet at the time...Jordan to someone in England was just a great basketball player in America.
As for the thread, just look at how many movies have been made about Ali...how many about Tyson? Tyson is huge...but if Tyson is an entertainment superstar, Ali is almost some sort of myth and legend figure.

Well Ali made 10mil for 1 fight in 1974. That was unprecedented. Also fighters since PPV would naturally make more anyways.

As time goes on and on, I think you're gonna find that Muhammad Ali's recognition with casual fans will fade a little more with each passing year. Back in the 60s, maybe even the 70s, I'm sure the most recognizable names in boxing was either Joe Louis or Sugar Ray Robinson, but both have faded into time a little bit. So by today's standards, I think if you were to ask a younger person who only casually follows boxing ( or doesn't even follow boxing period ) to name one boxer, they'll inevitably name Tyson before Ali.
And keep in mind, nobody in the history of the sport has probably gotten more press than he has, he's not just a sports-celebrity, he IS a celebrity, so I think Tyson probably edges Ali just a tad as far as worldly recognition goes.

Jesus! Are there still people over there who think refusing the draft was a bad thing?
You need to do some research into what your country did to people, meaning civilians, in that war and into the fact that you pulled out because of a report which concluded the entire US military was on the point of collapse. The G.I protest movement has been airbrushed out of history quite expertly. Soldiers were refusing to fight, others were fragging officers left right and centre, all the veterens were protesting the war. You had a bigger armed force, vastly superior technology and yet you lost because your troops didn't like the smell of napalm burning children in the morning.

At this point in time, most definitely Ali.
