Midway through the semifinal bout of the 1984 Olympics, the referee called break and at the same time Holyfield hit his opponent Kevin Barry of New Zealand with a left hook, knocking Barry out cold. He was disqualified after a short debate denying him the opportunity to fight for the gold medal.

He probably would have just headbutted the guy into submission but figured it wouldn't have been as effective with the headgear on.

Actually there is a bit more to the story. The ref was from _ (not sure which country). Disqualifing Holyfield meant that Barry would advance to the finals to face the boxer from _ (same country as ref). But, Barry being knocked out barred him from fighting for a period of time due to rules. So, by disqualifing him the ref was awarding his fellow countryman gold and helping him to avoid Evander at the same time.
Someone else here can probably fill in the blanks.

Yugoslavia was the country. The Gold Medalist was Anton Somethingoranothervic from Yugoslavia, and won over Kevin Barry on Walkover.

Thanks Kolya! :thumbsup
I saw it on TV when it happened Holy got robbed big time. He truly did not hear or see the ref call break and Holy walloped that guy. I remember the look of shock on Holy's face when he finally realized he was DQ'd.
He would have won that fight and went on to win the Gold medal easliy.

Holy had been warned for hitting on the break in that fight AT LEAST once before that, if not twice.
He was doing it the whole fight.
Wasn't the worst he'd done though, although he did KD Barry, so what choice did the ref have?

I'm relying on memory haven't seen it since it happened.
I wonder if the ref was speaking English?
At least Holy went on to become a legend I wonder whatever happened to what's his name he lost to again?

The actual foul was very close to tell. DQ seemed pretty harsh. Then again, a lot of Hoyfields pro bouts contained hitting on the break and after the bell by one combatant or the other.
Make your own conclusion.

Yes, the ref was speaking English. The only language used in amateur boxing on the International level is English, and there are only 3 verbal commands-Stop, Box, and Break. All warnings are communicated with hand signals during the couree of the round.
