View Full Version : What can Matt Hughes do to beat GSP ?
I'm sure Matt Hughes is more dissapointed at the Serra injury then Serra himself. now he has to fight a guy who didn't just get a lucky punch but beat the shit out of him in all aspects of the fight.
After watching GSP against Kos and see how he handled him on the ground it shows Hughes main strength is nullified by GSP.
Hughes doesn't exactly have good enough stand up even to get a lucky punch....but of course it's possible.
So question is what the hell is Hughes goin do? :huh
Try to get the mount, gnp and look for a sub. I think Hughes would be better off on his back than on his feet, but most ideal place for him is going to be zero inches away from GSP.
His strength cant play much of a role, but his experience and overall toughness, solidness when his opponents back is on the floor might be enough to carry him to a victory. At the very least he needs to force the fight to the ground, even if it means he will be on his back.

Shoot in on GSP and crack GSP in the balls and claim it was a accident.
or fake low blows to get out of the fight.....oh wait he already tried that one.
Matt Hughes obviously has to take it to the ground inorder to win. But I doubt he can do that, his old already and his feet are just not fast enough to keep up with GSP.

To be more specific, abondon all hope of winning a striking battle, and outgrapple GSP.
The idea that GSP can outwrestle, in the mma sense, Kos despite his incredible pedigree, but that Hughes can't outwrestle GSP in the mma sense because he doesn't have the pedigree that Kos does is really a bad assumption.
Also, Hughes' guard game has grown by leaps and bounds, and GSP has been known to take fights he is winning on the feet to the ground just to mix things up, if he does this, he stands a good chance of losing a scramble or getting outright swept and ending up with Hughes in a dominant position, which is a scary place to be.
and did you watch the whole fight GSP was out grappling in that fight as well. Even had a takedown in that fight, that was very fortunate for Hughes the armbar with a second left.

GSP passed his guard and took side control in the 2nd fight in a total of about 15 seconds after taking him down. GSP is better on the ground then on his feet I think. He hasn't just held his own, he has dominated some of the best ground guys in the weight class....on the ground.

GSP was not outgrappling him in the first fight, he kept looking for a kimura that wasn't there, and when he looked too many times Hughes took the counter and armbarred him, textbook stuff.

GSP pretty much out everythinged Hughes in the second fight.
Although right after GSP got side control, Hughes got up, he damn near got KO'd with a knee, but he got up.
I've got nothing against GSP, but to think that Hughes can't beat him is silly.

Hughes only chance is to get the takedown, and work his GnP. It will be difficult enough to get the takedown alone, then he is gonna have to be able to keep GSP there long enough to do some damage or possibly get a sub. And he will have to get the TD consistently in each round if the fight gos the distance or close to it.
I dont see any of that happening though. He will have to work his ass off just to get 1 takedown, and if he manages to get it, I believe GSP will be able to avoid getting damage done to him (lets face it, Hughes could barely do anything to Lytle on the ground, other than just hold him there, whats he gonna do to GSP?) and get back to his feet, where he will completely dominate.
GSP by ref stoppage in either the 1st or 2nd round.
I just hope GSP rewatched him vs Serra and then seen Hughes laughing and hi-fiving and having a grand ol time.....and makes him pay ...dearly. I just rewatched the second fight and Hughes looked like a deer staring at headlights......I can't wait.

:lol: Hughes should frantically be trying to erase every copy of that dvd and tape and rip it from every site!!! GSP is watching the end of that fight, and Hughes's reaction every morning when he wakes up! Hughes is in for one seriously painful curtain call :deal
Matt Hughes can only beat GSP one of two ways.
1. One shot his ass like serra did
2. Submission on the ground.
And after seeing GSP out wrestle Koschek, I don't think Hughes can get GSP to the ground and keep him there.
This is a replay of the second fight.
I sure hope so!!!.... the only prob is will Hughes consider retiring if he should loose this fight? I'm sure alot of people would still like to see him and Serra

Yeah, I'm worried about that too. If GSP beats Hughes, and then beats Serra for the whole title, then both guys would basically know that they're a long ways from another title shot and both are getting old. If they do fight afterthat it would be sort of a "last glory days grudge match". They'd still probably make it the main event of a PPV though.

Pay the judges and make like Andre Dirrell?
I'm sure he won't stand on the outside and get picked apart like the second fight...GSp was shooting fish in a barrell standing up with Hughes..I think Hughes will go for repeated takedowns even if he can't get them he will keep trying ontil he get's GSP off his feet, but we all know GSP is great on the ground and has great takedown defense...so Hughes has his work cut out for him.
