I'm too young to remember that fight and never hear much about it and I've never seen it either (:()
All I know is that DLH was knocked down in the 9th and thought perhaps the decision was controversial as I know that Sweet Pea was screwed before in his career with the Chavez decision.

Was the score legit?

Whitaker was robbed! It was very contoversial but nothing like the Chavez fight.

It was controversial....many feel that Whitaker wasn't actually beaten until Trinidad beat a very bad version.

I had 7-5 for DLH. Letterman had it even.

it was not controversial..sweet pea lost because he didn't throw any power punches. you can't beat oscar with just a jab and defense. I scoed 7-5 for hoya easily.

You can if you land far more. Besides, you can't really judge based on that can you? If you land more power punches you automatically win?

Oscar missed all night long and the refs gave it to him because he was the future. Without a doubt a robbery

hey I wanted sweet pea to win but he didn't throw any power shots. he acted like he was afraid to engage hoya who was open for some power shots. sweet pea kept throwing that soft jab and parrying oscar's shots but oscar was landing and was very agressive in pressing sweet pea.

Oscar was just too big for sweet pea same with trinidad. either they were too big and young or sweet pea was on the snow real bad.

He landed more punches and threw more as well, so he was certainly engaged enough to accomplish that. He also landed at a higher connect rate. Oscar was barely landing anything. Landing more power punches doesn't mean you win. Not if you are outlanded so badly.

You can't win a fight without landing punches. Well, except if you're Oscar

Fight could have gone either way, it wasn't a robbery. But the judges' scorecards were pathetic, as they were in plenty of Whitaker's fights.

Personally I had it for Pea by a point. I think DLH was grazing or not connecting cleanly with a lot of his power punches, so the disparity in power shots landed on the compubox stats were sort of besides the point.

Problem was Pernell was clowning as much as jabbing..He then preceded to give the final rd to Hoya..I dont know what he was thinking. The problem is that some rounds Pea didnt do shit and Oscar won those...If you look at the punch stats Pea would have won clearly. Oscar showed more aggression as well even if he was missing all night. I had oscar by a round

sweet pea lost because he didn't throw any power punches.

what was the point of punches thrown by Oscar if he didnt deliver them ?

There were a few fighters that did just as well/horrible against Whitaker but they didn't get the decision.

Well Oscar was a new hope of boxing back then and Whitaker was already seen by many as a shadow of the past.

It is actually very funny how things turn out to be in this life.

Right after 10 years you get younger guy named Floyd fighting Oscar, the fight was similiar in a way that De La Hoya was seen as an active fighter and Mayweather's concern was keep himsef away from punches.

If Mayweather was 35 he'd loose in that fight, if Oscar was 25 he'd win.

Oscar knows that but he keeps complaining that he won the fight just like Pernell did 10 years ago. (Althought I think Sweet PEa won). Will Mayweather complain after 10 years ?:hey We'll see.
