Let's say Khan is able to pick up some sort of "world title" at 135 by the end of this year, defends it a few times and decides he wants to step up to 140 and fight a "big name", do you think in a year or twos time, if Hatton's still fighting, that Khan vs. Hatton might be made as a fight to put Khan over in England as a massive star? Kind of like Calzaghe vs. Eubank back in 97 (except obviously Calzaghe didn't go into that fight with 1/10th the fame Khan already has now)?

He's more skilled than Hatton but he'll never be as popular.

Nice first post.

Take a little look at Khan's opponents.

That would be your first clue.

Khan is probably the most famous 21 year old fighter Britain has ever had. The guy got more hype coming out of the Olympics than almost any British fighter before him. He may not have the Hatton "everyman" quality, but he is already a household name in England, so he obviously has the potential to become a very popular fighter.

Khan has been mainstream from the start.

The average person on the street in the UK knows who he is.

Even after Hatton beat Tszyu he did not have the mainstream quality that Khan has. At least not in Scotland.

exactly, plus all of Khan's fights have been on ITV, regular terrestrial TV, something Hatton and Calzaghe (up until recently) didn't have the benefit of as they developed. That kind of exposure makes him even more mainstream as his career progresses. Had it not been for the fact he was fighting on the same weekend as the biggest British fight in over 10 years, his fight against Earl would have gotten a ton of press in the UK.
