Rees ducking Hatton!
"[Hatton] needs to prove he deserves a world title shot first," WBA super lightweight beltholder Gavin Rees' manager/trainer Enzo Calzaghe (father of Joe) bizarrely told the Daily Star. "Just because you are a name doesn't mean you should get a world title shot straight away." Rees, who was fighting in six-rounders two fights ago, and was considered a safe defense when he upset Souleymane M'baye for the title in an undercard bout in July, has a record of 27-0, 13 KOs. IBO light welterweight champion Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs) is a three-time world champion, is widely still considered to be the top 140-pounder, and gave pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather a tough go in a Las Vegas PPV megafight that attracted 20,000 Brits overseas. The elder Calzaghe did not specify what Hatton needs to do to prove he deserves a shot at Rees.

His Coach Of The Year SPOTY award has gone to his head - good job he's got Joe there to stop Ricky from taking him into the hills with a revolver.

Don't forget David Haye going to Paris to fight Mormeck and hence 'ducking' Maccarenelli.

Enzo Calzaghe has some of the most ducked fighters in the world tbf. Just wait until he hears that Mayweather's not considering stepping up to light heavyweight to fight Joe...

I wonder what Joe is thinking right now...

This guy is trying to keep one of his fighter from making the biggest pay day of his life. I wonder if he's baiting Ricky?

My thoughts exactly - although I'd bet Ricky has a picture of Enzo stuck on the dart board in the pub right now.

I'm surprised Enzo said that. What is he thinking? Oh, that's right, he's not.

The thought of Gavin Rees Vs Ricky Hatton is nothing short of laughable.

Gavin Rees did nothing to deserve his title shot. On Sunday nights BBC Sports Personality of The Year when Calzaghe and Hatton were introduced to the audience on the big screen from Las Vegas it showed Enzo turn to the guy next to him and if my lip reading is right he said 'that's what you look like when your fucking heads been kicked it'...charming.

He's just protecting his fighter. Rees doesn't want any part of Hatton.

He's just protecting his fighter. Rees doesn't want any part of Hatton.

Who would he want a part of in thr 140 division? Hatton, Witter, Holt, Malignaggi, and NDou would all beat him. Even a past his prime Castillo would beat Rees.

Be it Malignaggi, Witter, Torres or some other name at 140 Rees isnt in a position of avoiding tough fights.:nono He's a titlelist in need of quality wins if he's to challenge Witter or Malignaggi who are better and more qualified.

What Enzo calzaghe said is UNBELIEVABLE:scaredas: :yikes
I like Joe Calzaghe as a fighter and nothing against his father but there is no logic to his reasoning what so ever. Hatton WAS THE UNIFIED 140 Champ! Something I would have reminded and questioned Enzo on how he could be more qualified?

Enzo avoiding a challenge...where's the news?

Maybe he is baiting Ricky, who knows?

If he's being serious then as brilliant a trainer as he is he's talking crap.

Hatton should get a title shot at any of the current 140 champions and Rees stands no chance against him.

I love the way you've all taken this quote to be gospel. I can't think of a less reputable British newspaper than the Daily Star. 90% of the 'news' in there is pictures of tits. The other 10% is just a load of BS.

Also, the quote given on here is rather selective. It fails to contain more of what Enzo apparently said to them:

"I would be insane to let Gavin make his first defence against Ricky," he told the Daily Star. "I'm a manager with a heart.

"They might see Gavin as an easy route to becoming a world champion again, but I'm ruling it out at this moment.

"They could fight somewhere later down the line but not as Ricky's next fight."

_______________________________________________________________

I'm pretty sure Enzo is admitting there that Rees would get spanked by Hatton. As I said, if Enzo even gave the Daily Star an interview at all, they probably made some major alterations to what came out of his mouth because that's what they do at the Daily Star. It's an extremely trashy paper.

why would Hatton want to fight Reese anyway? He brings nothing to the table, besides a trinket. There's bigger names for Hatton. Malignaggi, and Witter.
