This weeks Sweet Science weekly boxing program is dedicated to Sakio "The Scorpion" Bika, the Cameroon Australian who was recently crowned Contender III champion with a torrid win over Jaidon Codrington.
Bika was born into poverty in Douala Cameroon and rose to become the All African amateur champion and in 2000 represented Cameroon at the Sydney Olympic Games. Following the Games he settled in Sydney under the watchful eye of trainer and Manager Jeff Fenech and is married with a son Zidane.
Fast forward to 2007 and after two unsuccessful world title challenges against the world’s best Super Middleweight champions, Joe Calzaghe (IBF/WBO Champion) and Markus Beyer (WBC Champion) Sakio Bika has been rocketed to world boxing stardom by his victory in the reality TV show “the Contender”. The series was seen in 50 countries around the world to a weekly audience in the tens of millions and Sakio’s stellar performance earned him a massive boost in profile ad a first prize of US$750,000.
The tribute includes Sakio Bika in studio with interviews with trainer Mark Pitts, Contender III opponent Sam Soliman, Manager Angelo Hyder and others on his magic carpet ride from the tropical slums of Doula, Cameroon to Kogarah in Sydney's southern suburbs.
