Hopkins loves talking bout great middleweights, Too Bad he didn't want to fight Winky at Middleweight because he would lose easily. After Winky Schooled Tito they should've fought.

BHOP is one of the greatest at 160 of all time. I love Winky but he is not better than BHOP. (and no one put a gun to Winky's head and made him fight Bhop at Light heavy). :deal
BHOP beats Winky at 160 as well.

well winky should've beaten him at any weight if he was better. their weight difference is not that big.

Most people thought he did. And if Winky gets the well earned W against Vargas he might've beaten Tito in 2ooo. Bernard would still be calling Roy Jones. Bernard still great, Winky better

Glad you supported your thought thoroughly, used style analysis, sources, and logic to convince us your argument was valid...:scaredas:

No, most people think he didn't. At 42 years old he beat him. Winky was walking around at the Hatton-Mayweather fight like a lost cause with nobody to fight and nobody interested in co-promoting (cus' lets face it, Winky Promotions never really got off the ground).
BHop is a top-10 ATG Middleweight by most standards, and there's a little more history in actually being a top-10 Middleweight than maybe being a top-10 Junior-Middleweight.
Hopkins at 42 beat Winky. Have you seen a prime Hopkins? Post-RJJ yet pre-ODLH? Probably not.
So my question to you, ignorant thread starter, what does Winky do that could defeat Hopkins? Cus' i saw a 42 year old man command the ring like a general and win a convincing (albeit boring) fight over the young defensive wizard. Hopkins took away his jab with ease.

Like him all you want, he's the worse fighter of the two. :good
Winky isn't looking too likely to get into Canastota. They saved some space for Hopkins years ago.

Easy I like his speed and combinations. And He's more likely to go fight and not stand around. Don't you think Winky too is past his prime??? You are more defensive than him.

With wins over Mosley and Tito, and the facts that he is the first ever undisputed 154 lb champ and has a generally agreeable personality, he will get into Canastota.

Bernard is way better than Winky, not even in the same league.

haha, nah that's just my style. I'm an ass.
Hopkins is much further from his prime than Winky. Hopkins will inevitably go down as a far greater fighter than Winky, especially with a win at 42 years old. I don't think you understand how amazing that is, and how hard to accomplish that is at such an advanced age.
Hopkins in his prime did everything Winky does better other than keep his ears warm in the winter. I'm only defensive because i find it ridiculous that someone could come to the conclusion you have reached with no valid support. Speed and combos? Hopkins has the ring generalship, controls the pace, great overhand right, excellent bodywork, excellent balance, and a multi-layered defense to boot (its a little more subtle than the ear-muffs).

By 2020 he might be in the HOF, yes. He's not going in as a first ballot. RJJ, Hopkins, Oscar, Floyd all in before Winky.

Bhop outwits Winky prime to prime...that defense is good but wont work against a clever Bhop..

BHOP out wresttled winky in their match. simple as that. if it was a boxing match winky couldve won. but bernard headbutted and wrestled his way to a win. though winky did give us more entertaining fights at 160 he will be an atg at 154 who could still get a belt at 160

Winky-Hops fight i thought was Damn close, could have gone either way, to much holding and wrestling:-( it would have been a way better fight 3 or 4 years ago at 160..:deal
Hopkins at 43 can't fight a full 3 minutes of a 12 round fight anymore, shit with all of the holding and hugging in the Wright fight he looked like he was at a Wedding or Family Reunion:-( Calzaghe will have a field day with him..:yep

Yeah, I agree that Winky gets in the HOF. Especially when you consider some of the guys who are in there already. The Boxing HOF isn't exactly Cooperstown when it comes to high standards about who gets in.
As for the topic of this thread, I think Hop is better than Winky on resume', prime for prime, pound for pound, and head to head. I like Winky, but I think Hopkins is obviously better.

what difference does it make if they fight at middleweight or not? Hopkins is a big middleweight and Winky is a big light middleweight. In the end they are 1 division apart no matter what weight they agree on.
Hopkins is leagues ahead of winky

Winky is the better fighter....and he would've won if the fight was at middle your right, and that isn't even Winky's best weight. :deal
Honestly, If Winky stayed at 154, and not chased the money fights....he would most likely be P4P #1 or #2 right now and Floyd would be avoiding him like the plague.

Winky may be superior to Hops in certain technical aspects of the fight game, but Hopkins is the better overall package when we include the intangibles.
Hopkins beat Winky because he roughed him up and made Winky fight his fight.
Hopkins and Winky are still two of the best P4P fighters in the sport, and both have been grossly underrated since their contest.

Please explain this to me. Not only did Winky do MUCH better against Taylor then Hopkins did, after 2 chances with him. But Winky was very much in the fight with Hops until he CLEARLY gassed out. How is Hopkins leagues above him. Is Jermain leagues above Winky too? Is Hopkins leagues above Jermain?

In terms of greatness, both Hopkins and Winky are in a different stratosphere than Jermain.
Winky clearly gassed out cause Hopkins' opponents always gas out. Hopkins is not leagues ahead of Winky but he has superior ring smarts and ring generalship. Enough to be an overall better boxer.

Glad the discussion evens out a bit. Resumes aside, Winky is clearly on Bernard's level. Bernard is more crafty, but Winky FIGHTS more, is an underrated body puncher in his prime, and was twice as fast as he is now. He throws many more punches and is still ALMOST AS EFFICIENT as Bernard.
P4P Winky is a tougher matchup than Bernard

Winky Wright couldn't hold a candle to Bernard Hopkins at middleweight. Winky has gone 2-0-1 at middleweight and never won a title belt. Hopkins won all 4 and racked up 20 title defenses.
Bernard would have still beat Winky at 160. His footwork, ability to produce angles, and dominance against southpaws would be the deciding factors.
Bernard Hopkins=ATG+Future 1st Ballot HOFer
Winky Wright=Future HOFer

At 170 I'll admit Wright didn't look his best. But did he looks his best against Taylor? Not really!
Winky's legs have been shot for a WHILE. The fight taking place at 160 wouldn't have made a difference I think. Even in the Tito fight, it was clear Wright wasn't as mobile anymore.
The HBO guys say he changed his style after the BS with Vargas, but even if he did consciously change his style, its clear that Wright has not aged as well as Hopkins.
He just looked so OLD in his last fight. Great fighter, and it was great to see him finally get a big fight and WIN it (when he fought Shane in '04, but come one, that Winky, or even the Winky that fought Tito, is no more!
Also I don't see WEIGHT as a factor in this fight at all. At any fight Hopkins would be stronger than Winky. And besides, Winky walks around at much higher than 154.. Like so many other fighters, Winky gains weight in between fights then has to drain to make weight. I realize a lot of people do this and are successful, but to do this and be in your mid-late 30s... I just think thats not a good thing for Wright.
