im sure everyone has seen training videos of the world class professionals, like mayweather, cotto, hatton, etc.

they usually have very thick handwraps/tape on their hands.

what do you think is the best method and/or item combination to emulate that? (without having too much thickness of wrap material under the palm)

mexican handwraps, with a fist guard, or knuckle guard?

I was always wondering about that one too. What do they use for those handwraps and what do they put on the knuckles and how do they make them so they look seperate like each knuckle has a small pillow.

I dont think they are normal handwraps you can buy from the shops , in training i think (but not %100) they wrap their hands as well as they would in the fight, which once again i think is more like bandages and guaze stuff . Dont think they are normal hand wraps

Yeah I think gauze would be the best way to emulate as well. I know my coaches always preferred to wrap my hands that way for big fights/national championships

If you want a cheap option for training I used to use to peices of sponge cut to size. start your wraps as you would normally then a quarter of the way thru add the sponge then carry on wraping your fists.

I wrap my hands mexican style and it looks pro. People ask me about all the time. I don't use hand guards or gauze, etc etc.

Extra long wraps? I have a pair which are excessive in length that when I concentrate more layers over the knuckles (less around the wrist) with two intercostal finger layers, it looks like a tiny pillow ontop the knuckles.

DEH707: Those things are bloody awful. I used them long ago in Karate Tournaments and when I went hardcore, the padding got dragged all the way back to my wrists. They dont fit into even the most spacious 18oz (believe me I've tried). I can safely say they are the worst 'gloves' of any Martial Art I have done.

All it is is gauze. You use a certain pattern in the wraps. Put gauze padding over the knuckles. Put tape strips between the fingers to separate. Them wrap completely with tape. Not so simple to do it right but that's all it is

They take usually an entire roll of gauze (10-15 yards) and fold it back and forth to make a pad that goes over the knuckles. Then use another entire roll to wrap the hand basicall the same way you usually would with a regular handwrap.

Pros can do this becuase they can spend all the time they want in the gym, and they can afford it.

I hit really hard and have often had problems injuring my knuckles in the past. I wrap my hands with a regular 180" mexican wrap and put a big piece of sponge over my knuckles and haven't really had any problems hurting my hands in training.

In fights you can't use the sponge so now I've started wrapping my hands with gauze which offers better protection.

I use two handwraps and layer them over my knuckles, works good for me.

The pad is usually made of a full Le Roy(Mexican medical bandage) bandage then wrapped with another Le Roy bandage .It is then built with strapping tape.

Those leroy bandgages are only 5.5 yards long. You can use them, but if you are trying to get as much protection as you can you will want something like this.

Maybe wrap them like in this video, then use masking tape (the type that a decorator uses to cover bits that he doesn't want to paint) in strips in between the fingers, then circuits of masking tape around the knuckle and palm. The masking tape is a cheaper alternative to the medical tape that our well-paid idols use!

I recommend using two Leroy bandages on each hand if you choose that

Nacho Berstien's stars all use Leroy bandages in fights and the gym!
