is it best to do calisthenics after your boxing workout or at seperate times?..
i'm concerned i maybe over training if i do weights (ex weighted dips, bench) then the following day sets of push ups as part of boxing training..

Skip the weights all together. Do intense calisthenics at the end of your boxing work out. Pushups, situps, and pullups.

:good I agree.
yeah, do them after. and they are more valuable than weight lifting.

half hour of cardio in the am. half hour of lifting in the pm=major fat loss and fitness gains.
You could always just incorporate pushups into your lifting schedule. Otherwise you can use them in between your lifting days as active recovery too.

In addition to calisthenics, make sure you do lots of running. Distance, intervals, hills, etc. Fighters that do not run, should get ready to gas and get KO'd. Running much more important than weights.

I am a former pro. If there are pros that do not run, I have not met them. However, there could be exceptions. That said, in my 30 years in this sport, all fighters that are lazy about running, end up losing. A great quote from Ernie Terrell - "90% of boxing is conditioning and 90% of conditioning is running". You do know who Ernie Terrell is?
I am not sure what your real experience (i.e., actual fights) with boxing is, but if you are not running (a lot) I would bet you lose a lot.
Forget what you read in books, why do you think all successful boxing trainers in the real world have their fighters run extensively?

Running helps improve an energy system, you don't necessarily have to run to do this.

I understand the science. It is the intangible benefits that running provides that also makes it so important for a fighter. Distance running is hard - that builds mental strength as well as aerobic fitness. Hill work and intervals help fighters with explosiveness. Fighters that have developed energy reserves in this manner have more confidence in the ring and are willing to fight aggressively without fear of gassing. As I wrote, there is a reason why succesful trainers have their fighters run a lot. It works!

I get what you're saying, but why do you think only running has these benefits? Why wouldn't rowing, cycling, swimming etc have the same effects?

They could have the same fitness effects, but running has more practical application for boxing. Leg conditioning is crucial. While cycling could work, it takes much longer to get the same benefit as running. Even Lance Armstrong recently stated that he has switched to running, after retiring, due to the efficiency of the activity. Plus I am not sure cycling can match hill running or interval sprints.

anyways running is good but its not the only way of doing things, a few pro boxers i know here who dont run, they prefer swimming or biking, or some just stick to traditional bag work, jump rope and floor work and they say that is enough, many of them have bad knees from running.

The reason I started of with that is to help you understand that you should learn from real experience. Lots of armchair fitness experts and boxing experts out there.
Once again, there is a reason why all successful trainers have their fighters do roadwork. Ignore that at your own peril. That is, if you plan to actually step in the ring! :)

I have never heard of any good professional who doesn't run.
running is essential. swimming, biking, whatever else, will not have the same benefits. bag work and jumping rope are also necessary - in different ways - so it's stupid to say 'that's all you need'. I do not see how you can ignore running.

me personally i enjoy running, but there are boxers who dont run, evander holyfield never runs, the only time he ran was when he was being trained by manny steward, and even then manny had to run with him to make sure he runs,
like virus said, running trains a energy system, it can be done other ways.

i gotta agree with young monzon , you gotta run as a fighter. running is hard, builds disclipline. all of my boxers run, i would not switch running for anything.
like virus said, running trains a energy system, it can be done other ways.
yeah, but that's not all it does. You get the leg strength and endurance you need in the ring. Also, you're moving on your feet, which is obviously what you're doing in boxing. You're strengthening your ankles and the bones in your legs. Something like swimming won't have all these effects...neither will biking. It's the best form of conditioning, aside from sparring .
evander holyfield is a pretty-boy bodybuilder who happened to have enough talent to succeed, and he is one rare example of a fighter that doesn't run

that is a very stupid statement, evander was one of the most hardest working heavyweights of all time, manny steward says he never saw anyone work as hard as evander did, he would bust his ass day in day out, even to this day he is one of the best conditioned heavyweights,
it wasn't his fault he had such a phyisique, i guess you think mike tyson is also a pretty boy bodybuilder huh?

what do you mean by pretty boy body builder?
some people are just more focused on aesthetics than others; you can sense it in their attitude.
this depends on what you want to gain from your exercises, if your doing them for muscle endurance then doin them straight after boxing training is fine, if your looking for speed, strength or explosive gains doing the exercises straight after the boxing will not offer any substantial gains in these departments and should be done when the body is rested.

Heh, theyre not better, certain training methods work for certain fighters man.. Burpees are hard as shit, and make me want to toss my stomach, but LONG roadwork gives you work ethic and that drive you need to overcome anything...

They all have their perks in my opinion.. thats right. i like to run 3 miles and every once in a while i run 4 or 5, i find it beneficial, but that does not mean it works for everyone, a guy i train with has won national championship 3 times, this guy trains with very little intensity, he doesn't run either but the only time i see him work hard is sparring, it works for him.

Exactly, by saying HIIT and Weight Training are "better"...
What it all comes down to, if you're training a certain way, and winning fights, you're doing fine as far as im concerned.
Look what happened to Mosley when he started doing heavy lifting with Vargas 1...(It was a somewhat close fight)
Than look at him in Vargas 2 where he used more of his older training techniques with his dad..
I also think the biggest advantage of roadwork, despite the stamina, leg endurance, and all... Would have to be the discipline and work ethic it helps you get, or maintain..

I've seen Tyson doing squats and lat pulldown.
that may be the case now, but his old workout consisted of shitloads of push ups, sit ups, etc, with some shrugs for shoulder strength and endurance (I think it was 15 kg)
Free weights are definitely not bad....it's just that too much heavy lifting will hamper skills. machines, however, have no practical benefit.

..............................................
The reason someone here would start off with, "Im a pro" is because it shows he walks the walk and his words have more merit because he is not just another guy going through the motions...he is a pro!
Secondly, for the person that brought up energy systems, running is not about energy systems it is about leg conditioning like the pro said above. If you swim bike you are not getting used to handling your OWN bodyweight and your leg conditioning will suffer in the ring.
Moving in the ring should be second nature NOT a thought process, therefore the more you do your conditioning on your own feet the better.
