Can some with solid ring experience give some tips on how to become more elusive in the ring? Obviously studying guys like Bhop, Pernell and Winky can help, but what ring attrbutes will help? Sitting there with a high guard you're still exposed to getting if you stand there-any training techniques or methods will be appreciated.
Thanks.

If you were getting the right kind of training, this question would never arise. Whenever you see a boxer who is easy to hit, you can be sure he was never taught how not to get hit. There is a long list of defensive drills that you need to perform in order to improve your defensive skills. You will often see me saying: "move your head" in various posts. Of course learning how to move your head in an effective way to create both defense and offense is not so simple. Find yourself a proper trainer and he will teach you.

I became evasive and quick on my feet by practicing moving lateraly around the ring while pivoting and slipping, trying to keep my body moving all the time. Moving lateraly is not natural so it takes a lot of time and practice to devlop a good fluid movement; skipping, running, benches, lateral hops and bar jumps all help.
You should concentrate at least a couple of rounds per session on angles, pivoting, leteral movement etc footwork is one, if not the most important attribute in boxing.

A few words on a bulletin board is not a good substitute for a real boxing coach. He could even get some books and videos, but that too is no substitute. Explaining a check hook is one thing, but giving specific advice on imroving defensive skills goes beyond the scope of any boxing forum.

Being female doesn't mean you are any less informed or educated about boxing. And being male doesn't automatically give you more clout. Come on, good boxing knowledge, is good boxing knowledge.

That has nothing to do with knowing what you are talking about when it comes to giving advice.
And yes, a low blow on a women hurts. I'm sure not near as bad, but it does hurt. But again, that has nothing to do with anything.

There is good and bad (mostly bad) advice given on here on a daily basis. Being male or female has nothing to do with it. If you don't like her posts, either point out why or don't read them.
Sometimes pudding give very good advice and sometimes it's vague or outdate and sometimes it's down right condescending.....just like everyone else who posts here. Being female has nothing to do with it. Let it go.

It won't be long before he is calling you a "stupid bitch." Whenever you respond all it does is encourage him.

Oh, he already does that. Thing is it just makes him look stupid. I think the only person on here that takes him seriously is younghipnotiq anyways. Besides I've already taken boxing farther than he ever will, so I'm not too worried about it.
Like pudding said defensive drills. Get someone to throw punches at you, preferably a smaller person so it won't bother you as much if he does get through. Start by doing each defensive action on its own, then mix them up later.
For example, start with having him throw jabs and slip them. Next, parry them. After that, block them. Then mix it up. Same for the right hand.
Next, hooks. First block a left hook. Then duck underneath. After that mix them up. Same for the right hook.
Uppercuts idem ditto.
If you feel comfortable enough you can have your partner mix them up as well, or just straight punches for example (right and left).
After that you can include a counter punch for example. The idea is to take small steps at once.

to becpme better defensively u need to make head movement a priority when shadowboxing and hitting the bag as this will take more energy out of you. however sparring someone more skilled than u with a very large puncg repetoire will give u experience and keep defense in your thoughts considerably more. for example i have been aggressive stalking and throwing considerable power punches in my last three fights over the past 6 or 7 weeks but this week i have been a sparring partner for roy jones jr and it only took a few of his flurries to remind me that i need to keep my guard tight and move my head on the inside...this experience has instilled confidence in my d and keeps it in my mind because its easy to forget in a fight
Should i put money on Roy?

well one thing you could pay attention to is relaxing in the ring- staying composed and your breathing. good defensive boxers are calm and composed in the ring- under all types of pressure. anyone can attack and go forward- but to weather the barrage of punches- take one here and there- and stop from taking 2 or three in a row is a true art. i d say when u practise sparring - take your time- ask your partner to help u learn and go in with the attitude of improving- not necessarilly winning. denfence can be neglected in training exspecially if your sparring an inferior fighter who has poor offence. many different ways to defend- slipping, blocking, sliding, and many differeent defensive styles
in terms of the physical- than obviously reflexes and stam, ina are important- but also the ability to keep your eyess open and not flinch when a punch is difficult but absolutely necessary to master- look at floyd- he d rather get hit in his eyeball than blink- he salways alert and can see everyrthing coming. its not one thing to improve on - its everytnhing. i guess u d need a trainer who knows you and can see u day in and day out to improve really- its a lifelong trade to learn- some bloke posting on the net and u reading it isnt going to make u a defensive fgenius.

yes i am an amateur and as for putting money on roy all i can say is he is the best fighter ive ever seen or been in with , his handspeed is still phenomenal and he moves around a lot less at least in sparring than i expected. his conditioning is very good from what i can tell he looks right on target to make the weight and each session this week was 12 rounds for him, i went with him on round 7 and 8 all three times and his punch output was the highest with me due to my aggression and lack of defense. he sure had a lot in the tank for those rounds and sure was hard for everyone to land head shots on. however, i have no other professional camps to compare it to, therefore i cant neccessarilly say whether hes focused, in shape, etc. but roy and his trainers have been class acts and he certainly looks great in spurts like he could knock any of the sparring partners out if he so chose
u sparred roy jones? no joke?
have u seen anthony mundine in there with him? i heard mundine went to the states to help roy prepare=- whats the sparring like between the two of them? id love to see those two go at it- the old master- and his imitator.

anyways how the hell this became a sexist debat ei dunno.
so to the title of the thread.
iv ealways felt that sparring is the main way to hon eyour defencive skills just doing patty cake on pads is good to keep you in time but it's not gonna block a right hand effectivly.
