I know that Don King prevented the bout from hapenning, but the question is what it a mandatory bout? If thats the case then which organization is it and is Diaz gonna get stripped? if not then how come there was a purse bid?

thanks for clearing this up.

Katsidis was the mandatory for the WBO, and I don't think that Diaz is going to be stripped because of contract war that got the fight cancelled. I have heard otherwise from other sites that it may happen, but Diaz's manager is fighting against it

whats the deadline for the defence? (IBF i suppose)

btw this is why i am all for the WBA super champion status. It prevents unified champions from running around having to fulfill mandatories left right and center, and gives them a chance to pursue the big fights

There are differing opinions about this. Katsidis was in fact a mandatory, but after Juan won the IBF belt from Julio Diaz, an arguement was made about the WBO naming Juan as a "super champion" like the WBA does. Since Juan meets the criteria for super champion status according to WBO rules, there is an arguement that the Katsidis mandatory isn't due yet because super champions have more time to do their mandatories than regular champs do. The WBO ordered the purse bid because they deferred to the previous agreement between Diaz and Katsidis which allowed Juan to fight Julio if he agreed to fight Katsidis next.
Now as to whether or not the WBO can or should strip Diaz, again, there are differing positions. Since Katsidis signed to fight Casamayor BEFORE Diaz signed to fight Campbell, there is really no basis to strip Juan in favor of Katsidis. Katsidis in a sense made himself "unavailable" to fight Diaz, regardless of HBO pulling the date. Golden Boy won the purse bid, and technically still could have done the fight without HBO, as Arum did when HBO pulled a date from him last year for Pacquiao. Arum simply distributed the fight himself. Golden boy and Katsidis chose not to do that, and instead moved on to Casamayor.
What would make the most sense would be for the WBO to just sit tight, and let the Diaz-Campbell winner fight the Katsidis-Casamayor winner, which is what everyone involved wants to do anyways.

Edit: The Campbell defense is already overdue, since Julio Diaz chose to sit on his ass for 9 months instead of fighting Nate. Juan Diaz vs. Nate Campbell is signed for March 8 in Cancun, as the opener to Maskaev-Peter on HBO.

thanks for this.

jhb and natep too

one more comment. As fans of the sport, we put up with trying to understand all the bullshit politics that are behind it, and how these politics can affect the way each fighter is managed. Average Joe sports fans (which i was before becoming an avid boxing fan) usually don't have the patience to figure all this stuff out, and its understandable that alot of people are turned off from the sport.

so it turns out chances are Diaz will be stripped of the WBO. This is the kind of thing that makes me cringe when every month or so a new thread pops up where someone complains about the WBA and its super-champion status. Every organization should have a super-champion belt for the unified champ and a regular champion belt for their number1 ranked guy so that the super-champ doesn't need to defend his titles against 4 people per year

I believe Kats vs Casa is on . . . if that happens and Kats wins . . . he'll have the Ring and WBO titles . . . I'm sure Diaz vs Kats will follow.

Yup Don King screwed both Kats and Diaz over, What I love about Kats though is that we would of taken a 20-80 purse split, and is right now suing DK for preventing the fight from happening. Kats wants to take a title away not be given one, I have no problem with him being the Ring Champion after he beats Casa because that would only make the inevitable happen by the end of the year, Katsidas vs Baby Bull.

Can you imagine how confusing it would be if they all did it though? "Super Champions" are not the answer.

He's still listed as champ on their official site & there is no news on fightnews.com who are usually quite on the ball with this sort of thing.
