Calzaghe holding? No, I'm not talking about a Calzaghe company. I'm asking the question whether Calzaghes fight-holding is a deliberate part of his tactics as opposed to unavoidable fight incidents?

No i doubt it to be honest. Its more of a he closes distance to fast so ends up there as opposed to a tactic.

Calzaghe is a very clean fighter.

No he is not. He slapped Kessler in the back of his head several times, was warned for it several times, and should have been deducted a point or two.

Sure, Calzaghe is as dirty as he needs to be. He is no saint but his style is not based on dirtyness, like Bika's for example.

Your comment makes me think how much can be taken away (in terms of points) from Calzaghe on reasonably fair grounds? I mean, how would he fare, with judges more against him than with him? Are there enough "dirtyness" in there to make him loose 1-2 points.

Youve never boxed in your life have you HolgerD........

Let me break it down for you, when you have an elite boxer like Joe, he breaks the space up between the two fighters so much with his pace which his opponent can't match he sometimes ends up in the arms of an opponent.

Nice try though.

No boxers are saints in the ring.

Any successful fighter knows how to fight on the fringe of the rulebook. Just take a look at some of Ali's holding of the neck against Frazier. Marciano often took a boxing match into the gutter. His knockdown of Ezzard Charles in the second fight was created by such a blatant rabbit punch it made Bugs Bunny wince. Hopkins should recieve a PHD for hit and hold . The list goes on. To isolate Calzaghe for a bit of tactical wrestling seems unfair.

Joe is an enigma, there's nothing he can't do, his chin is impervious to pain while whichever style his opponent brings he can counter.

Joe only grabs when his foe grabs & necessity presents itself lest he be rabbit punched to a loss.

Watch his matches closely and you shall find I speak the truth.

in the lacy fight,in close calzaghe grabbed the lacy left arm and contiuned to hit lacy with straight lefts, then released and moved away before the ref became in volved.

he must have done this countless times in the fight, but because he continued to punch it was not picked up on to much.

he also led with his head v lacy.

when calzaghe leads with his left and misses off balance he also then falls in and grabs to stop his opponent countering with a flush shot.

elbows/hip throws/forearm push offs/rabbit punching, all part of what calzaghe does in the ring.

10 years experience at the top means he knows all the old pro tricks that you would expect him to pick up and he is not shy in using them and hidden between his volleys they are not easy for the ref to break up the action and admonish him on , so he gets away with a lot.

Yeah he holds quite a bit, all the time. He's a hugger and throws 1000 blows @ the same time. He would probably throw 2000 blows if he didn't hold all the time.
