View Full Version : Cotto-Gomez
Are you serious???????????
That's taking 3 steps backwards...especially towards making a Mayweather fight happen in '08.
I love Cotto, but he's got to see that at this point in his career Bob Arum is just getting in his way.
This is garbage.

What's the source of this?
Thought Gomez was trying to fight Chavez Jr.

scene of boxing
talk of boxing
both have reported it for over 24 hrs.
part of HBO doubleheader with Williams - Quintana
Gomez - JCC Jr. was shot down by Arum in August...it was supposed to happen in October; where have you been? hehe
I wouldn't mind it if Gomez went up against somebody like Cintron. The Mexican against Puerto Rico thing would be in full effect and a win over the popular Gomez would build Cintron's visibility with the public. After that he could rematch Margarito...
But Cotto against Gomez? That don't do shit for me. Not that Cotto doesn't deserve a "maintenance" bout after his tough ones with Judah and Mosley, but him and Gomez don't work.
Gomez isn't even a top-10 welter. Cotto is the number-1 contender to Floyd's lineal title, and a top-10 P4P fighter. It doesn't make sense.

Money - I've been right here - listening to Arum talking about making that fight for April of 08 (April 26th to be exact). I don't remember hearing anything about the fight - until after Gomez beat Tackie. So - before you start throwing out the smart ass comment - make sure you check your own shit.
But thanks for the source - I'm going to check it out myself.

I am a huge Cotto fan, and I would be Hugely disappointed if he faught Alfonso Gomez. I like Gomez and all, but this isn't even a fight. I mean if he was going to take a step backward atleast stay in the top ten and fight someone like Collazo and make it mildly entertaining. I'm very disappointed. This is not the step to take in order to set up a fight with Mayweather. I mean I was against him fighting a washed up DHL, but I would much rather see that fight than this one. It's ashame the fans interest isn't taken into account when setting these fights up.

The fight was supposed to be made if Gomez got past Gatti in July, scheduled for mid-October. Arum declined to make the fight in early August and that's why Gomez fought Tackie...Chavez-Gomez isn't going to happen...Chavez is staying at 154. Check my own shit? I was just bustin your balls, don't get too defense there buddy :good And if you knew YOUR shit, you wudda known what happened 7 months ago :good

Mayweather is just going to say "Cotto just fought Alfonso Gomez, he's a nobody, why would i fight Cotto?"
it's a bunch of garbage...i want Mayweather-Cotto, and Cotto needs another big fight like DLH or Williams or Margo or Cintron to get Mayweather to agree to the fight.

Afte reading the article - I'm stuck on Arum as one of the greediest Muthaphukin Promoters out there.
All he's trying to do is match two of his fighter for a big fight. But he just doesn't get it - Margarito doesn't have a name outside of the Boxing Community - so it's a hard fight to sell. All he wants is Margarito/Cotto - but Paul Williams fucked that up for him. Now it looks like Zab will fuck it up too.
If he's trying to match the winners - it looks like we'll be seeing a Judah/Cotto Rematch.

RR94 - I got you.
But you have just as many post as I have - so you know that in here - you have to be defensive. If not - you'll be KTFO.

You're actually a little off on this. Gatti vs Chavez Jr was supposed to get made originally if Gatti got past Gomez, and Jr got past his summer tune-up, and that fight was gonna go down in October. After Gomez beat Gatti, they decided to have both Gomez and Jr essentially get tune-up bouts in October/November range, and if they both won, match them up instead on HBO in March-April 2008 range. But, since Chavez Jr's mini-PPV did surprisingly well, Arum didn't want to put Jr in with Gomez since he can make easy money with Jr continuing to fight tomato cans on these small PPVs.

That's what I thought too.
I only comment back if I think I'm right - but there have been time where I was wrong. But this is exactly what I thought happened.
Regardless to whether we're right or wrong - it just goes to show how greedy that old ass Arum is. He would rather keep Jr. on small PPV's - instead of getting one of the Major Networks to pick up his fighter's fight. I thought the exposure to more people would help Chavez Jr. career.

Surely Cotto deserves a fairly easy fight after last year!!

It is not so bad for him because he is having a big fight on the Puerto Rican Day parade weekend, who knows maybe Margarito or Paul Williams

It is a step backwards, indeed.
But, as one poster wisely said, Cotto has been fighting contender after contender and we can't criticize him for an easy fight.
