never seen the fight but from what i read vitali was ahead on all the cards when he quit between rounds
im guessing it was from a shoulder injury or something?

vitali was winning but his shoulder was hurt and byrd had a good 9th round.
vitali quit after the 9th.
holyfield also tore his rotator cuff against byrd.
if you're a juicer, do not fight byrd.

I remember watching this fight. Vitali gave Byrd too much respect in the ring. Byrd was able to back up Klitscho on several ocassions during the fight.

Vitali complained of a shoulder injury in round three to his corner. He was well ahead on points. Being educated and fearing possible career ending damage to the shoudler, Vitali opted to retire when he lost feeling in his arm and the ability to use it.
If he had a better corner, perhaps they could have urged him on a bit / talk some sense into him, or given him tactics to finish the fight.
Byrd was lucky to win. Even though Vitlai lost, he proved he could out box a prime Chris Byrd with one good arm. This fight should be viewed with an asterisk very much like a star Tennis player being up 2 sets to nil, and leading in the third set only to be forced to retire to an injury.

Vitali was kicking his ass but then opted to not fight anymore, that's how Byrd won. In my opinion I did not see his stock rise one bit with his win because Byrd didn't really do much and was getting beat up.

Byrd amost doubled Vitali in terms of connect %, Vitali was missing a ridiculous amount of punches.
Byrd was using his usual (illegal) tactic of swatting away punches with an open glove as well which along with the missed shots would have contributed to the injury.
Having said that, Vitali was not in any obvous pain and was throwing punches with the "injured" arm right through the last round up to the stoppage.
If he had "gutted it out" and just saw out the fight with one arm (as plenty of fighters have done before against more dangerous opponents than Byrd) he would have won even if Byrd swept the last few rounds.
The fight rightly raised questions about Vitali's heart. Far from proving he could out-box Byrd with one arm, he showed that he didn't have the guts to even try to out-box Byrd with one arm. He fought on while still using two, then quit when he felt like he could no longer effectively use one of them.

He gave Lewis a hard fight and cried like a child once the fight was stopped. It's easy to look tough when the decision is not yours to make.
He had the choice of continuing against Byrd and decided to quit. He was never asked for his opinion against Lennox so it was not an indication of his heart.

Vitali answered questions about his determination against Lewis.
He just never answered the question if whether he could actually beat a legitimaite top 10 heavyweight who wasn't fat, old, or both fat and old.
Actually, one of them was fat and old, and Vitali still lost.
Rahman could beat an out of shape Lewis, but Vitali couldn't.
