View Full Version : Kelly Pavlik - The most overrated fighter
Pantera2000

I mean come on now. The guy goes from beating up tomato cans and getting very little respect to superstar over night. All these posts about Pavlik fighting every great fighter out there. What about Pavlik vs Mayweather or Pavlik vs Klitschko?
Let's face the facts. No doubt Miranda was weight drained and he had no power on his punches when he lost to Kelly. This made Kelly look much better than he was. Next Kelly faces one of the most overrated/protected fighters in Jermain Taylor. Jermain had never been against anyone with power yet stunned by old men and little guys. Also, JT had not put anyone on the canvas in like 2+ years. But against Pavlik, JT not only puts Kelly on the canvas, but almost get the TKO.
Don't get me wrong. Kelly deserves credit and proved a lot. But he is far from where he is getting placed on people's list. I would not be one bit surprised if Taylor wins the rematch, and at 168lbs if Miranda is able to stop him.

I agree to an extent, Pavlik does have serious power, top 3 pound for pound IMO. As far as overall boxing skills he's limmited, his punches looked slow in comparison to Taylors, and his footwork is very choppy as well. Pavlik can beat some good fighters out there with his power alone, but the first time he gets in there with a fighter who got pretty good boxing skills and a chin he will lose.

Rankings:

McKart - 68
Zertuche -51
Not too hard to beat the bottom two. I give him credit for Zuniga though.

He didn't lose 50 pounds of water which is what makes you weight drained.
There is a difference between losing weight through getting in shape, and cutting weight. Cutting weight is losing the weight just long enough to step on a scale and then putting it back on before the fight, both men weighed nearly the same when they stepped in the ring. Both men are about the same size when in shape, if Miranda is stupid and lazy enough to get absurdly heavy between fights that just shows another way Pavlik is superior.
If Miranda is that lazy between fights 8 pounds wont make a difference, he will just lose less fat and be in worse shape before hitting the sauna and being weight drained again.
There is more to heart than getting beat up, true heart is displayed by working hard EVERYDAY. Miranda let himself get fat and out of shape, that is not heart. Saying Miranda has more heart because he was getting abused is absurd, Pavlik had the heart to be tough enough to take all the abuse Miranda had for him, and more importantly had the heart to stay in shape and act like a profesional.

Pantera2000...its been a long time. You hear what the above Beebs said? It took you long enough to even show your face up around here again after Kelly obliterated your boy, & now after slying slithering back into the fold, you finally got up enough balls to belittle Kelly.
Well, thats pretty low. And I could conclude with saying fuck you & your rat eating hero, but I won't. Because my boy has the belts, & you can only hope that Kelly doesn't smash Miranda's thick skull one more time in the future.

I agree to a extent that he is becoming a vastly overrated on this board. But he did what a champion is supposed to do, take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.. He beat Miranda, in a title eliminator and than beat the champ in Jermain Taylor.. I mean what else can you ask for?
Also, he is exciting to watch, which is always good for boxing
Im not even a big Pavlik fan, but i have to say Pantera is a joke. A guy climbs the ladder the right way beats everyone that puts in front of him by KO and then gets off the deck to dethrone the undefeated world recognized middleweight champion. He represents the ideal process of earning and obtaining a belt. Yet the way so called fans like you question his ability or credentials is an absolute joke. Does he have flaws? Absolutely all fighters do!! Will he eventually lose? Probably all fighters do!! You would be siging a different tune if he didnt beat your favorite fighter.

You see, at 210lbs Miranda is not fat. He is just freakin huge. To get down to 160lbs he had to burn muscle. That is what killed him.
Look at his weigh in pictures for his last fight at 170.5lbs, the boy is freakin ripped. Where the hell did the other 10.5lbs come from???
You put Miranda next to Pavlik at 200lbs and I bet Pavlik has a beer belly and Miranda is sporting Abs.

I actually dont think he can beat Calzaghe but he could perhaps beat Hopkins considering theyre both conventional...
However I rate him high on my P4P for the fact of his last 2 quality wins.. over the middlweight champ JT and over your man Miranda. I think Mirandas pretty good if you ask me..which is why I rated Pavlik high based on the quality of opposition he knocked out

No excuses. You and I went back and forth on another site talking shit. At NO TIME did you talk about Miranda killing himself to make weight blah, blah, blah. In fact, pavlik don't exactly make weight easily either.
Pavlik is much more skilled than Miranda, no slower, power is similiar, and chins are probably pretty equal. In the end pavlik is able to walk Miranda down, make him uncomforable and beat his ass. That is the story of the 2 fighters.

Pantera -- when you mention ratings of fighters Kelly beat your looking at ratings AFTER Pavlik fucking ruined them. Pavlik's last 6 opponents had a total of 163 fights with 116 knockouts. 4 had never been stopped, 1 was the undefeated and universally recognized world middleweight champion, one was a 2 time world titlist and went on after the Pavlik fight to win the NABF title, 1 had the NABF title until Kelly ripped it away from him. One was a guy so fucking tough you could rip his arms off and he'd fight ya with his fucking teeth! THEY ALL GOT PAVLIKATED in 9 rounds OR LESS! The last guy to actually go the distance with Kelly lost an 8 round UD, and never fought again!

When I saw this thread, I wanted to speak up for Kelly Pavlik, because he is anything but overrated and has potential to enjoy a truly great career. But to call Joe overrated and a slapper is just plain ignorant. The guy has not lost in his sport in 17 years, beat some really good fighters in Eubank, Reid, Kessler, gave one of the most brutal beatings to an undefeated beltholder ever in Lacy, never had a truly disappointing performance (how many figters in history can claim that?) has beaten every possible style. Kelly Pavlik is a very effctive, mentally and physically tough fighter, but he has yet t prove that he is better then Kessler, they are both good, solid jab - 1-2 boxers with excellent power and stamina. In Kessler's case, that wasn't enough to beat Joe.

I guess that this thread title is just another out-and-out declaration of war against Pavlik's supporters rather than an enlightening argument for conversation. Any sudden wash of cold reasoning would bring the thread starter to his senses and to displeasing embarrassment as there is no rational basis to rate KP differently from where he is supposed to be - the top position at 160 pounds - he is undefeated at 32-0 with 91% of kayo ratio (29 - twenty one inside three rounds), he knocked out all members of his list of best-level opponents - Jose Luis Zertuche (KO 8 ), Bronco McKart (KO 6), Fulgencio Zuniga (KO 9) and in his two last outings - a WBC eliminator as the WBC nº1 contender against the former WBC nº2 contender - a 7th round TKO over Edison Miranda who went twelve with IBF Champ AA in his only loss up until then, and another 7th round TKO over previously undefeated JT for the WBC and WBO middleweight titles... Otherwise, where should he be ranked? Anywhere below number one would be succintly ludicrous - he is not overrated in the true sense of that word.

I agree 200%! Hey Boo, that was a great post by Realism & all this support & accurate analysis of Kelly (past & future destruction of opponents) does my heart good.
Lovin' every minute of it.
Wonder why Pantera didn't respond to my post from page 2?
Maybe he missed it...here it is again:
Pantera2000...its been a long time. You hear what the above Beebs said? It took you long enough to even show your face up around here again after Kelly obliterated your boy, & now after slying slithering back into the fold, you finally got up enough balls to belittle Kelly.
Well, thats pretty low. And I could conclude with saying fuck you & your rat eating hero, but I won't. Because my boy has the belts, & you can only hope that Kelly doesn't smash Miranda's thick skull one more time in the future.

Enough of this bullshit, you can not lose 50 pounds of water. You'd be dead. Pavlik just owned Miranda plain and simple. If he weighs 210 pounds of solid muscle why doesn't he fight at cruiserweight or even heavyweight.

Miranda was owned by the ghost admit it to yourself kelly whips miranda's ass at any weight.

Then an eliminator with the ducked, dangerous Edison Miranda.
Then knocking out the world recognized champion in extreme fashion... yes he is overrated :patsch.
Let's see how Edison Miranda did before getting a title shot at a BELT HOLDER in Arthur Abraham:
The only one worth noting is an old Howard Eastman, but still a good journeyman, and the best win for Edison, then he faces Arthur in Germany with a grueling tactic, hitting behind the head, elbowing, headbutting.. literally tears Arthurs jaw into pieces, but fails to stop him.. Arthur fought him off for about 9 rounds with a shattered jaw.
It's funny how you say that Kelly is an overrated fighter, when he's knocked out his best opposition in extremely good fashion, yet your boy Miranda, has failed to knock anyone except Eastman.
This thread is a failure.. Kelly is a proven superstar.

Why you guys are comparing what Miranda has done I dont get. This thread has nothing to do with Miranda's accomplishments. It all has to do with you dick sucking fans that are putting Pavlik way ahead of where he should be.
If Jermanin Taylor was not a pussy and had anything in him he would have KO'd Kelly in Round 2. That would have been it and the Pavlik hype would have died. Kelly was way behind on points too. So obvousily if it was not for his power and stoppage he cant win on points.
Yes, all that matters is he won the fight and he is the undisputed champ. But that is where is should stop. If Taylor grows some balls, which I think he may, and goes after Kelly than JT wins the fight. Than all you JT dick suckers can come back on the forum and overhype him. I like to watch Miranda fight. I think he has awesome power in that right hand, but other than that he is average at best. His last fight, he looked sluggish and slow until the third. Maybe he was trying something different, maybe he trying to work on his defense, either way he didn't look good.
The KO was probably the best I've seen in awhile.

Unless his stamina improves greatly by moving up in weight, Taylors best chance is to go after Pav. smartly, and get a stoppage round 5 or before. Unfortunatly for Taylor, he's not shown the ability to be able to think very well in the ring when he's under pressure, and he has stamina issues. Plus he has that brutal KO lingering in the back of his head. Pavlik has those two qualities which Taylor lacks: Great stamina, and the ability to think well in the ring. I see Pavlik defending himself better in fight #II and bulldozing his way to another stoppage.
Also, I really don't see Pavlik being hailed by many as the next super great fighter, but people are, and should be impressed with what he's accomplished in the last year. Pavlik is still improving, and that's what's got people excited. If he keeps working on his defense, and I expect him to get much better in this department, he will be around a good long time as a champ. If his defensive development doesn't happen, then I agree with the critics, he'll eventually get beat by talented boxer by decision or one with skills and power by KO/TKO. Pavliks a bright guy and although he's got a good chin he must realize that it's not Haglaresque and he won't last the way Haglar did unless he shores up his defense

And another thing is Taylor has less concussive power , sure but his speed , accuracy and form can go alot farther than brutish power.

that and also jermaine may not hit as hard with a single punch as miranda but he has fast flurries that are stylistically worse for a fighter like pavlik.
Kelly wasnt hit with one punch by jermaine that cause him to fall to his knees, he was hit about 5 or ten punches. He got overwhelmed for a moment by the shorter armed, faster fighter.

I don't know at 178 I am more ripped than your boy is at 170, so to be perfectly honest I didn't find this physique you talk about as being all that impressive. I think we all know you work for team Pantera, you're probably that guy with the stupid hair and fake tan, but regardless of who you are you are a grade A jack ass.
You want to belittle Kelly? Kelly is taller and broader than Miranda, he is naturally bigger, and being ripped doesn't make you big. The true measure of how big Kelly is comes down to his combination of height and how broad his back and shoulders are, ie large frame, which was clearly bigger than Edison's.
I just want to talk about you now though. You come on here insulting other posters, insulting fighters and you have the nerve to call yourself a boxing fan? Miranda had to lose 50lbs to make weight. No way Pavlik was even close. Pavlik is the better boxer. Miranda has more single punch power, Pavlik has more power over continous punches. Miranda has a bigger heart to keep getting abused and not giving up. We dont know how much Kelly could take cause he has never been there. Better chin? Not sure here either. Again, Pavlik got dazed bad by one good punch. Miranda was hurt from being pounded over 7 rounds.
Being the champion does not mean you cant be over rated dipshit! That is the whole point!
You are a tool. I just read your "miranda had to lose 50 lbs bullshit! HA HA HA LOL What a bunch of bull shit. Let me get this str8. Miranda fights Allan Green March 3rd 2007 and then Pavlik may 19th 2007. So what your saying that in that 2 month period Miranda went up to 210 pounds and then dropped back to 160 pounds?:nut :think :rofl :? :nono :yikes Ok there is your first stupid point blown to shreds. Now lets discuss chin. Miranda... floored by one left hook by an Alan Green that was suffering from a life threatening illnes that require surgery and the removal of a majority of his large instestine. KOed in a heap by Pavlik.
Pavlik... Took all Mirandas shots with hardly a flinch. Ate a succession of punches (17-18 straight) nbefore finally falling, and then gets up to walk down Taylor and win the rest of the round. I'd call you an idiot but that would be an insult to the word idiot!

I would not be one bit surprised if Taylor wins the rematch, and at 168lbs if Miranda is able to stop him.
anyone remembered when Pantera totally dissappeared from every boxing forum out there for like 5 months after the raping Pavlik gave to Miranda.
*sigh* those were the good ole day

From some other fans, but nothing is certain yet, money will be right after Calzaghe beats Hopkins, and not sure if Maweather will beat Oscar, althouth he owns the judges and ref.
