i understand that round 9 and 12 causes arguments, i thought leonard won both rounds for his flashy bursts over marvins steady grind.

My dad was huge Leonard fan at the time this fight happened and he said it was one of the reasons he stopped watching boxing. Despite being a huge fan of Leonard he believes he clearly lost the fight. He said it was close but Hagler clearly won. I think he had Hagler by 2points

Tommy has a fine card right here. Marvin screwed the pooch with a poor fight plan, and it was not the first time.

I scored it 115-113 for Hagler. A flurry in the last 30 seconds is not enough to win the round.

What round did you score 10-8?

I scored it 115-113 for Hagler. A flurry in the last 30 seconds is not enough to win the round.

but thats not true for every round, yes their were some rounds where Leonard try to steal with 30 second flurry, but their were numerous rounds where Leonard stood his ground and fought right of the ropes and really took some hard shots but fought back great,

so I believe that a is very exaggerated statement, if you watch the fight in full.

Watched the fight today. I had Leonard winning 7-5. I thought close but CLEAR. Hagler looked pretty bad in this fight, very slow. Leonard wasn't just pitter patting. He was landing hard shots.

No it isn't. Leonard does a lot of moving, seldom settling down to exchange. But he does do it in spurts. It's just Hagler trying to walk Leonard down but not quite being able to do it because Leonard is too quick and Hagler seems slowed down. Leonard picked his spots well. Hagler got in some good shots. Not a barn burner but still one of the most significant fights in boxing history.

I actually watched the fight on this link. It doesn't just show the fight but sets you up for the fight. I think this was the official VHS video that came out for this fight.

Its funny, everytime i hear someone talk about this fight, they say Hagler was badly ROBBED.

Yet just about everyone in here says Leonard won the fight Clearly.

It's because they only saw the HBO Legendary Nights where they give the perception that Leonard was just running and pitter patting with 30 seconds left to steal rounds. That's just not true. And of course, Hagler always saids he was robbed.

Hagler 115-113, Listen for the 30!! being shouted by Leonard's cornermen, he knew he could steal rounds. Although I don't blame the judges on the night for being wow'd by flashy combinations and forgetting what happened in the first 2.30 into the round, it's hard for me to understand how people still score it for Leonard even though they can watch it back as many times as they would like.

Leonard via 115:113 or 116:112, I don't remember.

Hagler looked foolish, amateurish for stretches, the way he just slowly stalked Leonard and never changed things up. He didn't cut off the ring well and even when Leonard set to throw punches, which became a very predictable pattern, he was rarely able to throw with him and land good shots. Leonard won most exchanges.

I think it was the ring generalship that Sugar Ray exuded by making Hagler plod after him and the very non-effective aggressiveness of Hagler, that decided the scorecards.

I've scored it a draw and most recently a point to Leonard.

A flurry with lots of clean punches landing isn't less effective because you label it a flurry. People who call it a robbery should be taken out the back and shot.

It also suprises me that people give Leonard the 9th, Hagler clearly won that round -

the reason you here talk about robbery is cause people always have a an agenda. the one judge who had 118-110 was an asshole, but the other scorecards were fair, it was a close fight then leonard deserve to win. and hagler has himself to blame for that crap he pulled in the early rounds.

I scored the fight for Leonard 115-113 the first time and a draw the second time I scored it as I only scored it twice. I'll be honest, Hagler is one of my 4 favorite fighters but he gave a few rounds away and neither man won this fight clearly. It's not as "clear" for Leonard as some may think as either man has a case for winning this fight. I'm a fan of Leonard too but Leonard himself didn't do enough to win clearly. As far as famous close fights go, this is a pain to score as are Mccallum-Toney 1, Marquez-Barrera, Holyfield-Qawi 1, Morales-Barrera 1-2, and Pacquiao-Marquez 1 for instance.

Ok the first time i saw this i had Leonard taking a clear decision, believe i had him winning by 3 or 4 points.... I couldnt understand all the controversy... I thought welll maybe since i was watching with a lot of impressionable young viewers(i was a teen at the time) and thought hagler was gonna crush him.. That i just got caught up in the moment (as well as shocked) that i was a little to nice to Leonard, and fooled by his showmanship............. So the next time i remember me and my Dad watched the tape with the volume off and we both scored it a draw. I was suprised how differently i scored the fight, but im sure watching more carefully, with the sound off, and with a very knowledgeabe boxing guy(my dad),. That this had something to do with my much different scorecard.... Although i was already a knowledgeable hard core fan i dont thnk i was as keen as scoring fights as i am now, now i am much better at scoring fights and not be influenced by the announcers or other viewers.... So i voted draw 114-114... But i havent watched it in years and would be intrested on how i score it now????

Watching it the 2nd time i noticed that Hagler outworked him as was pushing the fight but still not landing any really big shots,,,,,,,,, Leonard seemed to land the much cleaner and flashier shots but didnt really do most of his work until the end of the rounds. Which fooled alot of people(including me the first time).

My prediction before this fight was Hagler by mid round kos... Hagler was considered the consensus pfp number 1 fighter and Leonard had been laid off for a long time, and his last fight he was dropped and troubled by fringe contender Kevin Howard before surging backfor a stoppage win... I didnt think he stood much of a chance against hagler who i thought wasa monster and would stalk Leonard down... Although i ended up scoring it a draw.. I thought this was a great win for Leonard and it seemed like he won. Even though my card said different (if that makes sense?)
