First off i have to say that i used to be a huge Roy Jones fan so there is no motive in me saying this but i thought Jones looked worse than he ever has.
Remember the squinty, glazed eye look that Jones would get in his losses? At times in the fight when Trinidad was hitting Roys gloves he would get the same look. Roy was flat footed, reaching for punches, he couldn't let the trigger go so no counter-punches, he would just plod along covering up and then force himself to throw shots, he has no legs anymore, his reflexes are shot and he knows it so he keeps showboating in an attempt to convince himself and his opponent he still has it. His showboating used to be entertaining and he knew when to do it, now he just does it badly and whenever in the fight with that goofy smile, this fight reminded me of the third Tarver fight, Jones is completely done now.
He fought a natural light-middleweight who had retired and he still couldn't get the confidence to open up and take him out, Jones needs to retire now, Calzaghe, even Hopkins would absolutely destroy him.
Perfect Post
To me... its all mental. i didnt see any effect that titos punches had on him, i just see him mentally not being able to fight... yes he won... ect, ect.. lets be real here guys... the question was could titos punch be a factor, it wasnt, the result should have been roy got his ass out of there, just like he said he would (in 4 remember?)
I cant BELIEVE... honestly, that people are thinking this win means ANYTHING for roy...
and this isnt being rude, i liked the fight... and i dont dislike roy, and would like for him to fight a few more times... but im just slipping a dose of reality here, hes not BACK, hes not BETTER, and this win didnt show me anything.
Its kinda like... how gatti looked like mayweather against the joe's on espn, but against elite comp.. (hell.. even gomez) they show him he needs to retire.
Against a fighter who should be 20lbs lighter if hes fighting at his best weight... or at the VERY least 160, and who it was obvious couldnt really hurt him unless he landed a perfect shot... he should have been able to lay it on the line to take tito out. But he doesnt have the heart for that...
Against a guy his own size.. TRULY his own size, not a guy ballooned up... it will show.
I hope not.. i hope im wrong and that roy is back and yadda yadda.. id love for him to somehow, someday, beat tarver....
I was uninmpressed too. The legs weren't what they used to be, he makes only little offensive spurts and there were no real intentions behind those shots.
Maybe I just watched too many prime RJJ highlights yesterday.
his speed is still superhuman tho... lol... damn... sometimes i cant beleive it.

Roy looked good to me, he is 39 not 25. Seems a little wiser, but everyone is on me because I think Roy vs Calzaghe would be better for boxing that Calzaghe vs BernardAgreed...Hopkins called out Joe in the hopes of a big money fight before Social Security kicks in...and Joe took the bait...all Joe and all of us will get with Slopkins is a dirty, mauling, clinching fight maybe even a headbutt or two by Slopkins...Jones can at least put up good defense and still counter better than anyone despite not being as good as he was..this says alot about Jones...Slopkins just fought a LMW and had to headbutt his ass to win...So who's better? Who would make the better fight for Joe? Would'nt it be worth more for Joe to fight Roy?? I think so:good
I didnt think Roy looked good at all but he was entertaining and that's what his fans like. He won and lives to get another payday.
Worse than when he got knocked out by Tarver and Johnson? Nahhhh. BTW, Riy fought legitimate lightheavyweights in his last 2 fights against Ajamu and Hanshaw. He was dominate in those fights as well. Obviously he is nowhere near what he use to be but I'd say he's still at the very least a top10 fighter.
my question is, as everyone almost seems to be on the jones bandwagon...if jones is so good, how could a blown up 35 year old man who hadnt fought for a year and a half and was comprehensively dismantled last time out, AND has shaky whiskers to boot, last 12 rounds with this born again potential division king???....jones looked ok, but his opposition was hardly enought to gauge how he would do against a calzaghe, or, even an active hopkins....(personally, i think he would have more chance against hopkins at this stage, calzaghe wins a wide ud or kos junior around round 8...)

I thought he looked good, not a world beater but still he gave a good performance, instead of focusing on the bad points lets take into account everything that looked good. His speed is still 85% there, he has no problem with stamina and can set the pace of the fight however he wants. His accuracy was good and he's defense was tight.
The worst thing about the fight was that Roy let Tito off the hook after the first KD, that punch really hurt Tito and he just let him off the hook.
The way I see it...Calzaghe/Hopkins should go through and Roy should take a fight in between and provided he wins that fight he can take on the winner of Hopkins/Calzaghe later in the year. All in all, at least this fight put Jones Jr. back on the map and got people talking.

Rjj does have that speed...probably the fastest fighter we'll see at these higher weights in our lifetime.
The guy is faster than Manny Pacquiao...

I thought Roy looked great yesterday, he was fast and accurate and picked his shots well. It was quite a good audition for another championship fight..
In fact i was impressed with the way Tito fought also , he was a bit out of his depth yet kept coming and refused to cave in, a real champion...

I thought he looked great, Especially for being 39 years old. You people forget he fought that one time at heavyweight and that was over 200lbs and yesterday he fought at 169. That's a great accomplishment. I dont remember anyone fighting at heavyweight then droppin back DOWN to that weight class.

Biggest thing Jones seems to have lost is his Legs!... He used to move on air before and now he sits flat on his heels. Also his head movement and reflexes have diminished. He used to make guys miss a lot more where he didn't have to block and get hit has often. He still has hand speed but doesn't have the endurance to sustain his attack and combinations on the fighters as he once did. He had all the advantages against Trinidad, that is why he looked so good, but he still couldn't finish Tito; he made it down the field to only score a field goal instead of scoring a touch down. To put into comparison, look at the fight with Vinny Paz, a prime Jones who had the obvious physical advantage took care of business and finished his guy viciously like he did to Vinny.
Its not that anyone is taking credit away from Roy. Yes, at 39, an aged fighter, he looked good last night and will against most average fighters. The problem is that when he was in his prime, he seemed almost 'invincible' and dominated his fighters so convincingly, that now seeing him 1/3 of what he was, its hard to see him fight at or look like anything less than great. Despite what we would like to believe, that Roy is back to his old self, that simply isn't the case.

Again what are people expecting from a 39 yr old Roy??I think with his age he has to turn into a defensive shell fighter..He can't be expected to jump out the way of punches like he use to he's a yr away from 40 ! Tell me what 40 yr old moves like they did when they were 20 or even 30 in boxing? Eventually you have to be able to extend your career because you can't do the things you use to..If Jones was as technically sound as Hopkins there would be no flaws for people to see but since he relied on his pure athleticism people act surprise that he lost a step or jumping ability ..As I recall Jordan wasn't the same with age so how could people expect Roy to be??

To me Roy reminds me off a late 70's Ali (you pick the year) when Ali had slowed down, but could still do a little dancing, and little rope-a-dope & mugging, but still had the bursts of speed and punching to win fights.
I am looking forward to the Roy - JoeCal fight.

Its not that people are expecting roy to be 20 at age 39, at least not me. Its that many people prefer to see Roy retire rather than look like a good instead of great fighter. At least for me its difficuilt or frustrating to see him just look like a shell of what he once was. And I say this because I really do believe he would get outworked by a lesser guy like Calzaghe at this point in his career. So its pointless for him to go out calling out guys he can't beat.

i aint disrespecting jones..he IS an atg, i just wonder about looking great against an oponent who hasnt been fighting and is at best a shadow of his former self...id love to see jones compete with clazaghe, and no, joe aint faster than rjj..who is??...but hell, his pace, decent power and accuracy will be enought o win a comfortable decision..i believe that truly...
.question...if jc beats the two grandads, hopkins and rjj..where does that put him in the atg list...anywhere?, or is everyone just gonna start sayin that they were old men and past it anyway??..seems like joe has two tricky fights here, heads they win, tails he loses....if he beats em both clearly, as i expect him to do, , people will cite the challengers respective ages as the reason...and if he loses to both or either, or even fails to shine in winning, that too will tarnish the legacy he seems so keen to leave as everyone will say well hell, he got beat by an old man..how good can he be???......

It's like I told my friends, a win for Tito would mean a HELL of a lot more then a Jones win.

Jones is 39 and for a 39 yr old, he did great, not to mention Tito also did way more than i thought he would, considering it was he first fight above 160 and was completely blown out by Wright over 2 yrs ago! Overall i think the HBO crew summoned it up perfectly, both looked good, no one was embarassed, everyone got paid and both put on a show. Couldnt ask for more from former top-tier greats, whose better days are behind 'em.

Agree, Jones looked finished to me. If that was Glen Johnson he fought yesterday, I have little doubt that Jones would have gotten KOed again.

I've found out no matter what a boxers does, it is never good enough
And i've found out some people have strange emotional connections to men they don't know who compete in sports causing them to be blinded to the fact that the guy is obviously finished in his chosen sport. They believe he is still the best just because they have memories of him being the best. Roy Jones was the guy who really made me follow boxing but for some reason i can see things for what they are instead of some others who foolishly think he poses a threat to the likes of Calzaghe.
Yeah Roy Jones looked alright for a 39 year old but Roy Jones was never the average fighter, he is done and i give him no credit for not being able to knock out a retired welterweight, he seemed to be more interested in clowning and cheesing than fighting so that's why i want him gone, everytime he fights his aura shrinks in my mind. I say i used to be a fan because his ego has taken off into the stratosphere since his losses, he can't back up his talk. When he was a super-middle Roy was a classy and confident guy, now he just wants to feel his own balls and tell his trainer how to train him.

Worse than ever would not be my choice of words . Showing his age is more apt. He won and showed flashes against a slower smaller man but he wasn't overwhelming and showed he isn't as mobile as he once was. Tito was better than expected I must add.
Why keep fighting ? He was virtually untouchable for years , truly in a class of his own. Then he went up to heavyweight and won . He then should have retired. Where else is there to go after reaching the top of the mountain ? What could motivate him to continue after doing it all ? Nothing.... but what else does he know ?
So know we have a fading Roy who can only show brief flashes of what he once was.
He talks about "believing in himself" "faith in God" yada yada.... well and good but people get old Roy , wake up and smell the coffee. Retire NOW after a win.

I dont think Jones is done yet, he may not have the footwork and be able to slip punches as he once did, but he is still one damn good fighter. He's changed his style a bit, it's not as flashy as it used to be but so what, he's proven that its effective. Effective enough to knock down opponents and win rounds easily. I think he will win another world title, but it wont be a flashy spectacular performance like the roy jones of old, it'll be enough to win. Im kinda diggin this new roy jones. Thing you gotta realise is before he got knocked out by tarver, there was the truly elite fighters, and then there was jones who was on a whole other level of natural talent, i wouldn't count him out yet.

Roy is powerful and can put flashy fast combos together.
Why does he only fight in short spurts?
Why did he let Tito and Hanshaw off the hook?
Stamina.
Of lack of. He has to seriously pace himself to make it through fights. He's so cautious about punching himself out he didn't dare go for Tito when he was there for the taking.
Roys one of my favorite fighters but I got to call it like it is, he did not look good, he looked average. Most Light heavys would have put Trinidad away. Roy needs to retire, his basically a KO waiting to happen.
