What actually happens to ones brain when they get "knocked out"

as the title states, what occurs when one gets knocked out that basically makes the body go numb?

Basically your brain gets knocked back and forth agaisnt the inside of your head and your body conks out. Like when you bash a CD player lol.

Your brain has several protetive mechanisms. The first, is its enclosed in and surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The brain 'floats' in this fluid. The fluid aims to cuhion any violent movement of the brain and prevent it from hitting the skull. In excess to th existence of CSF is what are known as 'meninges'. These are pretty much three layers of varying consistency of material over the brain. The first is known as the Pia Mater (l: soft mother) which is a really soft tissue type substance that encases the brain. Following this is the Arachnoid Mater which is so named due its consistency being comparable to that of a spider web. It bouys any knock to the head.Subdual heamatoma's. The final layer is the Dura Mater (l: hard mother) which has the consistency of maybe a baseballs outer covering, and is designed to stop penetration of foreign objects more then absorbing movement. On a side note - subdural hematoma's occur between the space of these last two layers when veins or arteries rupture and bleed into this space.

But anyway, a knockout occur when a knock to the head is signifigant enough to render these mechanisms of protection ineffective and the brain hits the skull. Whether it is the bodies automatic response to go limp as a form of protection, or whether the brain hitting the skull causes the loss of consciousness, is a matter of debate. But, that is what causes MOST, not all, knockouts.

There are a couple of other ways, but their pretty insignifigant in terms of theyre application a boxing knockout.

The reason why they say hit the chin is because there is loads of nervers there and if ya get a good puch on it your head will black out i.e. knockout

Its because landing there will cause the head bounce around more and thus the brain to get rattled more.
