View Full Version : Did Roy lose his power?

When he opened up more from round 3 on, he hit Tito with a lot of lead right hands, even flush combinations, but Tito was never really hurt, despite being down twice. Well, the first knockdown hut him. But my point is that a prime Roy, ignoring the other things he still could do, would've probably knocked Tito silly if he landed the same amount of punches. Just look at how he knocked Griffin silly in the rematch, or Hill with a single body shot. Tito is a natural superwelter; Hopkins knocked him out and Hopkins is not a huge puncher either.
I also thought he lost a lot in his legs. Often, when Tito came on, all he did was block punches (which he did well), but he did often not get out of the way like he used to do.
He lost the pop and speed on his punches that he once had and he didn't commit to his punches in the Tito fight the way he used to in his prime. That's why his power isn't great anymore. Roy's legs are obviously gone now.. he's close to being completely shot.

Well, he's gotten slower. Roys power was speed-generated. While his hands are still quick, thats all, he just seems to flick them out, whereas he used to f'kin launch his whole body into his shots

Like Toney, I think he overestimates his current punching power and a lot of that is down to the reduction in speed and a bit of power, yeah.

Yep, much of Roy's power came from his explosiveness, which he no longer seems to possess based on his legs.
Tito has been KD often but has only really been hurt once before and that was after a sustained beating from Hopkins. Roy still has power, but he was never a great finisher and now it's pretty much non-existant. Unless he wanted to go the 12 rounds had he been able to pull the trigger one thought he could've KO'd Tito, and also in his last fight against Hanshaw. Roy's last stoppage win was way back in 2002 against Clinton Woods.

yeah he can still crack a bit obviously because he's still fast as hell but it's not like before.

Jones didn't finish Tito off most likely due to the torn tendon in his right bicep he tore before the fight ..

I've noticed Jones tends to pull away from his shots. He never really follows through and gets full leverage. He seems to content to land and then just pull back. I can see Calzaghe just treating Jones' shots with contempt if they fought.

Hard to pull the trigger when you have a faulty weapon ..

His timing seemed off to me on the biggest punches that he loaded up on. If he fought more often this would not be the case.

Jones is showing his age whether he likes to admit it or not, I'm not saying he should retire, because obviously he doesn't feel like it, and that's good that he's still competitive. He has to understand that he's not the same fighter before, his losses to Tarver and Johnson are no fluke. People like to say he still has the handspeed, Muhammad Ali still had handspeed when he fought Larry Holmes, handspeed don't mean nothing.
