View Full Version : Can you imagine how Ali would've been burned down after the Doug Jones fight, here?

Povetkin lost 3, at most 4 rounds to Chambers and was the decisive winner. Yet about 50% here now says that he sucks, that he's overhyped, that he should go down to CW (!! asif he can just lose 27 pounds while being in lean shape already, remember Roy Jones?).
I don't want to compare Povetkin to Ali, but let's not forget that he has only had 14 pro fights. Ali squeked out a close 6-4 decision against Jones and was knocked silly by 185lbs Cooper. He looked relatively bad against Jones, glass chinned Norton, Young and others. Didn't matter; he still accomplished more than any heavyweight not named Joe Louis.
Again, i'm not saying that Povetkin will be a great like Ali, all i'm saying is that some of you are overreacting; Chambers is one of those guys who makes you look bad; so are Byrd and Donald but he had no trouble there. They were old, but then again, Alexander only had 12 pro fights! I don't see him beating Wlad either, but it appears that that is the criterium on whether "he's good" or "he's not worth shit". He's being called too small while he's a mere 1 inch shorter than and 15 lbs heavier than a prime Ali. And no, he doesn't look ripped, but that's just body type... he is lean, fast and throws 77 punches a round at 227 lbs. He's a great addition to the somewhat improving heavyweight mix. Some people just keep bitching.

Ali would have been balsted as a prospect when he was nearly out vs Cooper too.
I have seen Povektin fight about 10 times. He wasn't as sharp as he usually is last night. But he did prove his intangibles and smtaina for sure.

Not to mention he would have been 'exposed' by Frazier after fight of the century.

I didn't see the fight but some guys on this site are ridiculous, unless somebody wins 12 rounds to 0 or knocks them out they are waiting to be exposed :nut.

I'm pretty sure boxing fans DID blast Ali after that fight. I saw an old interview of his on some talk show shortly after it, and the co-host of the show told Ali to his face that he thought he lost that fight and seemed like he wasn't a fan of Ali's at all.

Great post, ChrisPontius. I could've written that myself but I really didn't want to as no one's stopping the BS and after a few thays ESB Forum calms down anyway.
But if I've written the post myself, I would've written the same as yours word by word.

Ali was "burned" at those times.
But later in his career he more than made up for it by beating series of great fighters like LIston, Frazier, Foreman and good fighters like Norton, Quarry and Shavers.

I had posted some of this on my thread. Perhaps you picked it up there. Yes, fighters like Chambers specialize in making their opponents look bad. He has a very tight defense. And Ali in fact LOST to Douglas, Jones, and Cooper (in fight #1), but was given a crooked decision. There were other crooked decisions in favor of Ali, too, the two weird Liston affairs were just the most notorious.

Povetkin has great fundamentals, a solid workrate, and what appears to be a good chin.
He just lacks the tallent that fighters like Ali or Tyson had, and he lacks the punching power of Klitschko and Lewis.
He's a good fighter, but he's bland because he lacks the punching power and finese that fans would like to see.
He's still a good heavyweight though, but he's definitely not ready for Wlad.

No one is ready for Wlad.
That was only Povetkin's 15th pro fight, and he was not at his best either. He was recovering from the flu, and Chambers - previously 30-0 - with his tight defense - is a fighter who specializes in making his opponents look bad.
