The undeniable truth of facts: Mayweather-Cotto

By Cesar Pancorvo: 2007.

It seems natural that the winner of Mayweather-Hatton fights the winner of Mosley-Cotto: the Welterweight Champion against the #1 contender, two big stars, two P4P fighters. Cotto beats Mosley, in a close and competitive fight, and Mayweather beats Hatton by knockout, after trouble in the early rounds. Hatton’s weight, the night of the fight, is similar to the weight of his fights as Junior Welterweight Champion. Many people say Mayweather defeated a blown-up Junior Welterweight. Many people don’t remember that Mayweather started at Super Featherweight.

Cotto beats Mosley and, weeks later, Mayweather beats Hatton…A bout between Mayweather and Cotto now seems like a natural consequence that should happen in boxing, and that will materialize in the next months.

Mayweather is asked about Cotto, about his future plans. He says he’ll be away from the rings for some time, he wants to rest, he wants to semi-retire. We remember that he said something comparable after defeating Oscar de la Hoya. He didn’t tell the truth in that moment, and we should have expected that he wouldn’t tell the truth now. And yes, his semi-retirement is apparently not true. A rematch with De la Hoya is being talked about, for September 2008. A rematch with Oscar de la Hoya is almost done. Mayweather doesn’t have intentions of fighting Cotto, apparently. Many people say that Mayweather is ducking Cotto. Many people say that Mayweather is a fraud. Many people think Mayweather is ducking Cotto. Vox populi, vox dei?

Cotto beats Mosley. Bob Arum, his promoter, unexpectedly starts making plans for him weeks before the Mayweather-Hatton mega fight. He says that it is possible for Cotto to face Joshua Clottey and then Antonio Margarito. He doesn’t mention Mayweather. Cotto always does what his promoter tells him to do. After the Mayweather-Hatton bout, Evangelista Cotto talks: he says that they prefer a fight against Oscar de la Hoya instead a fight against Floyd Mayweather because Oscar de la Hoya is more marketable. So, before and after Mayweather-Hatton, Cotto doesn’t seem to have intentions of fighting Mayweather.

In January, Bob Arum orchestrates Cotto’s near future. He will fight Alfonso Gomez, who is not even a Top10 Welterweight. Fans divide, some approve the fight and some condemn it. Then the winner, probably Cotto, will likely face the winner of the rematch between Kermit Cintron versus Antonio Margarito. This is what Arum possibly wants: Antonio Margarito against Miguel Cotto. Again, Cotto doesn’t seem to have intentions of fighting Mayweather.

To summarize it: Arum, before the Mayweather-Hatton fight, was making plans for Cotto and they didn’t involve a fight against Mayweather; Evangelista Cotto, after the fight, said they preferred to fight Oscar de la Hoya instead of Mayweather; Cotto, in a few months, will fight Alfonso Gomez. Many people think Mayweather is ducking Cotto. Vox populi, vox dei?

BTW, in regards to the actual article.

I don't think Mayweather is really interested in legacy. I think he's more interested than coasting through his career, much like Calzaghe, in the sense that he won't take a fight that will risk him going life and death in.

ALTHOUGH......

I did think his fight against Oscar was a challenge, but it would have been much more difficult if Oscar was 3 years younger.

You could make the argument that Mayweather went after Hatton, but Hatton has never been known to break people's faces, and Mayweather had almost every advantage in that fight.

Height and Hatton's inability to throw the jab and reluctance to let his hands go in the inside are two major reasons.

Cotto poses a real threat, but yeah...............it's both of their faults that the fight isn't happening.

In the mean time, Mayweather should take an easy, easy, easy tune up with Margarito, who Floyd looked in the eyes and promised he would fight.

Arum is being a bitch. Putting Gomez in there. He REFUSED, absolutely REFUSED to put Cintron against Cotto unless Cintron vacated because he owed Clottey a mando, which was due LATER this year. But to top it off, he then goes and sets up Margo-Cintron, instead of Clottey-Cintron. I THOUGHT he wouldn't allow Cintron to fight unless he vacated or it was Clottey?!

Vox populi, vox dei?
it's just an article writtin by an ESB member...don't get your panties wet:yep

So what, where is the big deal supposed to be? Cotto's promoter is organising other fights until Mayweather is prepared to make the fight happen. Big Suprise. What did you expect him to do?

Freddy your the one who's made multiple accounts. Funny how theres 3 members with the same exact IP as you.

And BTW. To Young Lord, someone did write that for ESB as a member but that quote about Arum looking at DLH and planning a fight before Mayweather even fought Hatton has been on multiple boxing sites. Its true.

Arum has had no plans to put Cotto in against Mayweather.

Cotto beats Gomez, then most likely fights Margo for the title. Then he has to fill in a Mando against Clottey. And then probably his mando for his other title. Arum is already tying Cotto up for the next year and half. :deal

You can't deny that.

Eh. Theres only two threats at Welterweight and thats Cotto and Paul Williams. Cotto really hasn't done much but hes the number 1 guy. Floyd can't go after him because he is dealing with ex promoter who can't stand him and won't put Cotto in the ring with him. And Paul Williams isn't as established and he has a fight set in with Quitana.

I dislike that Cotto-Floyd isn't being made but my blame is on Arum. And to top it off, if Floyd wasn't fighting DLH for the money. Cotto would be.

I know. Did you notice how he jumped from Margo to Cotto? Once Margo was shut out of the picture he jumped right to Cotto and he now claims Cotto has been his favorite fighter since he saw him :rofl What a complete bullshit lie. Didn't he say the same thing about Margo?

Now Gomez is a HUGE Threat according him, but we all know that's because freddy is completely bias.

Watch out, he might come in here and claim I buzzed you in to save me! :rofl:rofl

And yet, he gave every excuse NOT to fight Margarito...EVEN WHEN FLOYD HAD NO OPPONENT. That's right Scar. You can say "Floyd wanted to do this or that" but the TRUTH is he said no to career high's when he had NO PARTNER. :deal

You can never deny that scar. Margarito made Joy stutter and it kills you. Arum and Margarito made Floyd look foolish, and that probably made you hate Margarito.

Imagine any other top fighter turning down a career high payday for a supposed easy fight. I can't.....

Cotto has proved himself to be an elite level fighter, who has disposed of all of their common oponents in more convincing fashion. He also has a style that has been very effective vs Floyd so far in his career. If you don't think this is a dangerous fight for Floyd, then you need to have a good hard look at yourself. Margarito and Cotto are two very different opponents, its silly to place a direct comparison between them.

Comparing victories over the same opponents is stupid. Both have completely different styles. But if you want to go like that, Floyd beat them all first. Cotto fought left overs.

The quote from Evangelista Cotto appeared in various sites of boxing news.

Fact is anyone who stands straight in front of De La Hoya's jab without moving or blinking aint never gonna be rated top 10 in any greatest list. Any doubts, just watch the fight again.

Said top 10, as in the top 10 of all time. Good never came into it, Watch some Welterweights from the past 35 years. Might help you evaluate.

I dont really care too much about the past. The past is the past and fighters today have a very very very low chance of making Top 10 on ATG list. No one today will become Top 5 All time.
