View Full Version : Erik Morales
What do you think were his best tools/skills as a fighter. I find it hard to say since he was good in about everything but what made him reach that level?

yeah, he had a varied attack. Very strong with each punch, but not great with any particular one. I think his uppercut was his best punch, however.
More talking about boxing abilities. He had a lot of hearth for sure and that helps a lot as a boxer but you can't reach ATG status with a lion's hearth only. Gatti, Ward and many others had so much hearth but not equivalent boxing skills to go with it. So what i mean his what boxing abilities (power, speed, defense, footwork or chin obviously in Morales' case) made him succeed so much in the sport.

Maybe his punch variety. He had a good jab, left hook, a big right hand, and great uppercuts.

He is very skilled with intangibles to go with it, heart, chin, power, speed.

id like to throw out there his underrated footwork, he kept his opponent in his attacking range, never missed wildly (except against raheem), and he never smothered his punches. Great range.

He had a great heart, but I think the fact that he was never a boxer whom you could say 'watch his left hook or right hand' helped him a lot cause his opponents wouldn't know exactly what to expect. He could hit you with anything and he had great speed and power in both hands. Great warrior indeed

He looked like shit against Raheem. Raheem had alot to do with it but so did his pudgy body he came into the ring with...

He's a reckless daredevil. He paid dearly for it when he fought Pac in the last two fights.
another pac fan w/ no boxing knowledge.

Didn't you watch the 3 fights, bro? He was quite reckless. He attacked without defense especially in the last two fights where he got knocked out.
he doesnt attack recklessly, he fights with controlled aggression. Thats what won him the first fight.

thats why ive never thought pac was really that great ... the first time he fought morales he was past his prime an erik still whooped his ass then 2nd an 3rd time he was torn down from the wars hes been in an same with barrera... juan manuel marquez would have beat him if it wasnt for that 1st round... an he hasnt really fought many other ppl..... but back to morales he will always be one of my favorite fighters... my favorite moment of his was when he turned south paw against pac in round 12 of the 1st fight.... lol roy jones couldnt figure out why he did it an larry merchant was jus like because hes a true warrior who wont let pac beat him at his own game

Why is that everytime the EM-PAC I fight is brought up its "he whooped his ass" but when somebody mentions the last two fights, its "he's washed up"
I think the 2nd fight is a tell tale sign of what could/would have happened without the gloves and cut eyed excuses. Morales was in cruise control in the 2nd fight up until the 6th Round.
Going back to Erik, its his machismo combined with his boxing/brawling skills that people love him for.

Morales was over the hill in the first Pac fight. He didn't whoop anyone but he did outbox Pac. Basicalyy in the second and third fight he just gave the fans what they wanted to see. Got knocked out in both for it. Morales greatest little man/warrior ever. GUTS AND HEART made him great. Had he boxed instead of just letting everything go in most of his fights, he would probably still be prime right now. All boxing fans from all the world love him fr for his style though. How anyone can hate on Erik is a fucking insult to the sport of boxing. Morales in his prime was better way better than Pac will ever be and that shit is not even close.

I'll agree, he outboxed and outclassed Pac in their first fight. That's just a given. He was also outboxing Pac in the early rounds of the rematch before he 'magically' gassed out or was washed up according to people here.
there goes another one.."Prime Morales would have beaten Pac". Why do people have to put somebody down to make themselves feel better about their boxer?

Both are great fighters so lets stop this.
Im a big Morales fan and i would say Morales was washed up. The fight with Raheem showed it. When i watched that fight i knew it was over for him. It made me very sad being that he was the boxer i looked up to.
He had the skills but chose to please us. I thank him for that even though it cut his career short by 2-3 years.
Does anyone else miss him like me already??

being a big fan of his, i have a lot of morales film at home and watch it whenever i'm bored. intangibles really defined the guy. iron chin, iron will. skill wise if he wanted to box he was a good 'long' fighter. solid jab and a good right hand, which was his bread and butter. good uppercut as well which he abused guys like ayala, juarez, zaragosa with. good timing, which made up for his lack of athleticism. had a varied attack, going for the head and body. one of the interesting facts about him imo was that he used to work with floyd sr. on his defense, i wonder how those sessions worked out hehe.

For me his best attribute is his ability to make a mean tamale but as a fighter, it would just be his well balanced boxing ability

He turned southpaw and lost the round. LOLz
Anyway, you can't change the fact that Pac gave him his first KD and he knocked him out twice.
You again!? why do you hate so damn much. Go start a fuck Morales thread or something punk. then see what people say to it.
I hate the pinoys like you fucken got one good fighter and brag about him like he is some sort of god. I guess its the only thing that gives you guys something to talk about.

so what happened in the 2nd and 3rd? did he control his aggression? Nah. why did he lost by a KO? He attacked and attacked which fit Pacman's style perfectly. He got body shot and hit w/ Pac's vaunted left.
Anyway, he lost. What's the point of discussing?
shut up dickface..have respect for one of the greatest pugilists in the featherweight division.

So what if he lost the round. It was one of the most bad ass things I've ever seen.
Erik Morales is a God...question not your god.
And yes pac did give him his first KD and did knock him out twice. Pac is also a good and ballsy fighter. That should be enough for you pac boys. Please do not diminish one of the Greatest warriors of all time in order to put your man on a false pedestal. That pedestal is his Mother Fucker!!

An outside to inside fighter. Great jab and his best punch was his straight right. He would outbox his opponents and when the opportunity came, he slugged it out, most of the time by his own choice. As some have pointed out, he wasn't a reckless dumb brawler, but a boxer-puncher that could distinguish when were the times to smack his opponents at the brawling game, he simply loved to land that last shot on his opponents. This is what made him a favorite for the boxing fans.
His footwork looked sloppy many times but he found himself in position to land his punches. Not the fastest fighter but still decent enough. Not very accurate but Morales's and Barrera's common opponents always said that MAB was more accurate but Morales could hit much harder.
