Yeah, Lesnar vs. a striker would have been a way better first match. I'm not sure if UFC wanted to embarrass Lesnar, or give him an easy win. If it was the latter, then they're idiots. Don't put a relative rookie in with a jiu jitsu fighter and former champion.

It doesn't even make Lesnar look bad if that was their intention. Or if they wanted to get WWE fans by having their (ex) champion being beaten. It wasn't even a beat down, it lasted 20 or so seconds and ended in an ankle lock. That won't appeal to new fans, just the opposite. This was a good chance to catch a new audience (pro wrestling fans) and was completely butchered. They also fucked over, or at least set back, someone who was supposed to be their new poster boy.

I feel bad for Brock but he did fairly well against someone with that kinda experience for his first fight.
The strength discrepancy was apparent. Lesnar would have demolished a stand up fighter. He was almost demolishing Mir. But with a jits fighter, they can catch you at any time. And Lesnar was way too excited, thought he had the fight almost finished, and was running on adrenaline. He stopped paying attention, and that's all it took. Instead of laying down in Mir's guard, he was trying to stand and pass.
Silly, silly match making by the UFC. I really don't get what they were doing there.

Man but Lesnar will be a force with more training and experience, it sounds like he was destroying Mir out there.
While I thought Lesnar looked pretty impressive for the most part, the poster above is right. The headlines tomorrow are going to say former WWE star subbed in a minute and a half. That doesn't help build Lesnar up as a future star. But maybe that's what the UFC wanted...to make a statement: You don't just come into the UFC and win. But why they would pay a guy a big contract to send that message is way, way beyond me.
And I'm going to go out on a limb and say if Steve Mazzagotti didn't stop the fight and take a point, Lesnar probably would have won.

amhlilhaus
02-03-2008, 12:58 AM
the ufc made the match because they thought mir was finished, no ifs ands or buts about it. if lesnar won in spectacular fashion (which he was on the way to) then it would have been huge, and a couple more wins would have had lesnar fighting for the title. one of the problems with the ufc style business model is that the promotion is effectively your manager, they match you and while I believe the fighters can refuse, in essence it's the mafia, they make you an offer you can't refuse and they are in the business of making the most money for the company, not what's the best for the fighter.
now on to the borefest that is tim sylvia, I expect a tedious standup battle with nogueira getting a few takedowns late in rounds and sylvia fighting him off til the round ends on the way to a decision.

Agree completely, I guess they thought Mir was shot enough to be taken, and forgot the BJJ aspect against a guy not experienced enough against those pitfalls.
Lesnar cirtainly has the tools but not the experience. I agree they should have matched him against a stand up guy with a questionable ground game and built him up, and let him get some ecperience. Again I'm sure they thought Mir was shot, and maybe is.

Nog has now taken: Sapps piledriver, Fedors GnP, Crocops LHK, Herrings kick and now Sylvias right hands. And he isn't dead!
You forgot a truck to his right side.

What's up with all this talk about the UFC heavyweights sucking? Did anyone suffer through this division four years ago when it basically consisted of Cabbage, Arlovski and Sylvia? Those were sucky times, my friends. We're in a golden age now and it's just getting started.
for sure, it was basically Sylvia and Arlovski....and that was it! there is lot's of names to throw around now

The difference is now UFC basically IS MMA, so its starkly obvious that the talent pool in the heavyweight division of the SPORT is actually quite shallow.
There's only really Fedor and Bartnett who could make any waves in the UFC (who are not currently UFC fighters.)
I wouldn't mind seeing Alex in there, it will be interesting to see how he does against Barnett, but I'm sure Alex won't be in the UFC anytime soon.

Aleks is no longer fighting Barnett.
Barnett is fighting Yoshida.

oh!, what happened?
No idea why the Aleks-Barnett fell through. But Barnett is fighting Yoshida in Japan in April.

For all the shit Tim Sylvia has got... even the haters now have to respect. For years people were talking like Tim wasnt even on Nog's class.
He might not have won the fight last night.. but he showed he is clearly in Nog's class. That fight easily could have went another way.

Did feel a bit sorry for Tim. He strikes such a pathetic figure.

He almost won the fight by knockout - but that doesn't change the fact that I can't stand to watch Tim Sylvia fight. My friends and I were commenting that he is basically the heel of the UFC heavyweights because we hate to seee him.
