View Full Version : UFC's Agenda for Tonight

I believe the UFC had 2 specific goals tonight. The first was to show the world exactly how gifted these fighters are and end all the "Well I could do that...." bullshit. This is why they took Brock Lesnar and put him against one of the few guys who was sure to make his strengths a weakness. A BJJ practitioner who is great off his back? Why UFC? You are trying to build this guy up, make him the next big thing right? Wrong? They could've thrown him anyone and it would have been acceptable given he only had one previous fight. They wanted him to lose, they attracted alot more fans and they can still have him fight again after he trains more.
Success! :good
The second was to take a shot Pride fighter, who is universally recognized as a legend of the sport and the 2nd best Heavyweight from Pride and have a UFC fighter beat him up. This would have legitimized Randy Couture, and the rest of the UFC at the same tim. There would be no REAL reason for them to ever even entertain the fact of "Fedor being #1 anymore" because Fedor's best wins Cro Cop and Nog just got starched in their organization.
Failure! :yep
oh no! is this where you say you miss Pride and talk about the 04 OWGP and how much you miss it!
But on the other hand, I think Mir was a bad matchup for Lesnar and they should have fed him someone like Heath herring, it would have been a longer and more entertaining fight. But non the less Brock will be back. It's almost as bad matchmaking as Machida-Skodou, Remmy was a highlight reel fighter that most UFC fans havn't seen yet and put him against a guy who is a top ranked fighter who makes everybody look bad who he fights against.

I don't miss pride, every single pride fight I have seen have been on the computer and not live.

1/ I dont think that was the case, it was just really poor match-making imo.

How is it poor matchmaking? I think that was great matchmaking.

Well the thing is, I get the impression that Brock asked for the Mir fight. Dana ran through a list of potential names and got to Mir and Brock asked for that one.
Thats the impression I get from interviews with Brock.

For Lesnar - assuming he wanted to win?

The UFC wanting him to lose angle should be taken with a grain of salt because he was easily the highest paid fighter tonight at 250K. Now, if they paid him 250K to prove a point, that's an expensive point. I feel Brock Lesner had the ability to make the UFC more than 250K, and I feel they thought Mir was done. Lesnar didn't exactly look bad, just totally unprepared for any ground action. I'm just saying, it doesn't make sense for the UFC to prove a point. Lesnar wins they get WWE fans and a giant name fighting for the UFC title in a fight or two. That's just my take.

I think it was good match making in terms of rejuvenating or kickstarting the winners' careers. If Brock had won - he would have been hailed as the next big thing in MMA. Well, Mir won, so his career is back on the fast track after a high profile match up.
Dana White is the sumbitch getting paid at the end of the night so it's a winning situation for him all around.

For Lesnar - assuming he wanted to win? There was 2 outcomes here. Either Lesnar got subbed quickly via his inexperience which did happen, or Mir was truly shot and got pounded into dog meat on the mat. Its really subjective as to wether it was good match making now that the event has passed. Either way i truly believe Brock DOES have a place in the UFC as a pretender and maybe a contender. His light years behind in terms of submissions, ground game and striking. All he has is his own natural talent. Bearing in mind he had the upper hand for most of the bout thats not too bad a result against a guy who`s essentially pure BJJ.

In a room of 9 people I was the only one cheering when Mir won. I don't think that the UFC planned him to lose. In all honesty I belive they were playing the Ex champ card figuring Mir would show up like he did in his first 3 fights back in the UFC and it faild.
As far as Nog vs. Tim, Nog was the only hevyweight that could sell a fight vs. Tim.

I agree with the OP. Keep in mind, Lesnar could have picked many opponents, but he specifically asked for Frank Mir out of who was available. He could have fought a can if he wanted to, he specifically asked for Mir, and well, got what he wished for.
No bother though, because I don't there's any question that Brock can really go places in this division.

Well yes, if you're Lesnar its a tough matchup, but if you are getting paid big-time money, getting big-time exposure, and get to walk to the ring second over a former champion which really pissed me off and was morally offensive, you can fight big-time fights.
He could have signed with EliteXC and fought Bo Cantrell, but this is the big leagues and nobody should get cupcake fights.
