Where a fighter went out of his way to hurt or maim another fighter for one reason or another.
Ali vs. Patterson or Moore?

Ali was pretty tame in comparsion of Jack Dempsey or Rocky Marciano, Henry Armstrong ranks over Ali also.

There are diferent kinds of cruelty.
If torturing an oponent is the definition under the pretences of a boxing match, then Jack Johnson takes it by a mile.
There is also destructive cruelty where the fighter is going for a knockout and is as ruthless as a man squashing a fly. The more polite this type of fighter is in his personal life the more sadistic he will be. He is nice to his mum but views the boxing ring like a computer game.

What kind of things did Johnson do in the ring to be cruel?

Greb vs. Tunney I and many others. He was doing everything except kicking his man in the groin and hitting him with a chair.
However, it was just the way he fought. I don't think it was personal.
Duran-Moore was a bit sadistic. Stupid Maganya.

I don't really think so, jus that Ali lacked the power that Dempsey and Marciano had. If you watch him vs some guys, especially in the 60's, he looks pretty mean when he opens up. The fight with Terell was borderline sadistic.
Anyway, the first fight that i thought of was Bowe vs Golota II. They gave each other such a thorough beating that neither was really the same afterwards.

Don't think Golota was trying to hurt Bowe.
Obviously he wanted to get him out of there, knock him the fuck out...
Look at what the pressure did to him when he couldn't.

If Ali got purposely called "Clay", then the cruel factor set in.
With his immense Talent, the fight got one-sided real quick.

Tunney always emphasised that he admired Greb, and was a pall bearer at his funeral.
He also said that Greb was greater pound for pound than Ray Robinson.

Tunney had grace --he accepted that such was Greb. Greb for his part had kind words to say about Tunney after giving him the worst beating of his life, saying that Tunney was his toughest fight and later choosing Tunney over Dempsey. Greb actually slapped down 4 grand on Tunney and said that Tunney is a man who "won't [allow himself to] be beat."

Frazier against Ali in the Thrilla. Frazier wanted to hurt him bad.

They seemed to be out to hurt each other every time they fought one another.
Ali's holding in their second fight was flat out insulting and blatant.

Ali v Moore ? I dont see any sadism there.Ali's cruelest fight would be with Terrell imo. Gonzales against Snipes was pretty nasty ,the big Cuban tortured Snipes,I was glad to see Bowe beat the shit out of him.Johnson v |Burns and Jeffries were pretty gratuitously cruel ,but Burns had called Johnson names for years and only the day before referred to him as a"damned hyena" .Given that the tune played all day at the Jeffries Johnson fight was"All c***s look alike to me" ,Its hardly surprising that Johnson relished his moment in the sun ,the ring was one place he wouldnt get lynched for beating the crap out of a racist white man

Lamotta v Janiro is another. I have never seen the fight myself, but it's quite well known that Lamotta went out of his way to hurt and maim Janiro in that fight.
Lamotta's wife had innocuously commented that Janiro was a good-looking guy, and Jake sought personal revenge by savaging Janiro's face as much as possible.
It's also said Lamotta could have finished him off, but chose to let it go the distance in order to exact yet more punishment.

It has to be Dempsey Willard. I've never seen such a horrific beating in a boxing ring before.
Holmes Cobb was fairly brutal as well.

Chavez took a beating to Haugen and tried to delay the inevitable KO in order to inflict more pain.
Now THIS was a cruel beating. Haugen was the sacrificial white Gringo in this fight for "insulting the honor of May-he-co" and for insulting Chavez as well. He sure paid for it.

This was the ultimate brutal knockout in my opinion, in a way, just as devastating as the ending of the first Marciano-Walcott fight.

Jorge Luis Gonzalez torturing and taunting of Renaldo Snipes.
From what I remember about that fight, it was that Gonzales was labouring unable to finish Snipes, rather than trying to cruelly prolong a beating.

If we want to include psychological cruelty (not necessarily beating someone for the sake of beating them up), then I'd put Naseem Hamed-Steve Robinson.
It wasn't like a Chavez-Haugen where Hamed prolonged the beating, but he just mercilessly taunted Robinson in his hometown.

Golota is 40 and a top 10 "world class" heavy. Bowe is SHOT and sadly probably mentally retarded.
