View Full Version : Peter to unify belts within 2 years

Hey folks,
I'm a Peter fan, obviously. Not here to start a flame war. I respect all boxers for their hard work.
Technically, Peter still has a long road ahead but he has shown improvements in recent fights. He's arguably the biggest puncher out there today, has a rock solid chin, and motivation to boot. If he can just continue to polish up his boxing skills I think he has a legitimate chance of unifying the titles in the next couple of years.
I can definitely see a scenerio that has Wlad vs. Peter to finally unify the belts one day.
Thoughts?

He would have hammered Toney some more if he was really good.

Correct. And that's all apart of him growing as a boxer in the ring. But I'll give it to Toney as he is easily one of the best defenders in the sport.

i think wlad would take him to boxing school again and vitali would knock him out more than likely. ruslan could take him and so could the atomic bull

he is showing large impovments every fight---
He doent fight often enough IMO though.
That guy should be fighting every 2-3 months anyone he can
He will KO Klit if he ever gets a rematch IMO and
has the best chance of capturing all the belts if he stays more active.

I guess because Rahman is more useless.....................twice in fact.
Twice as useless seems about right.

Peter will not unify the belts, but we are all unanimously agreed here that he will beat Maskaev and win the wbc strap.
Unfortunately for him he then has to meet Vitali. I will have to see more of Vitali before I can judge whether he has anything left to judge that fight.

large improvements every fight?:huh
He has had 1 fight with large improvement.
THAT IS ALL. and IMHO that was a fight where Toney was a sack of shit so Peter could do what he wanted.
there are many fighters that would have LOVED to be in Peter's place for the second Toney fight.
Completely agree, I don't think Peter is ever going to make a huge improvement to his boxing skills. Also, I don't think Peter wins Wlad..sorry, other than rabbit punching and 1 legit KD, Peter pretty much lost every round. Wlad is indeed getting better on his defense, so the odds of Peter landing that money punch to KO Wlad is getting slim and slimmer. Peter, first needs to beat Maskaev, which he probably will..then I would give him a good chance against Ibragimov, but I think Chagaev beats the hell out of him. Chagaev has good skills, solid power, and a chin that could withhold Peter. Chagaev would make Peter his bitch.

Peter beats every heavyweight out there right now except for Wladimir and Vitali.

He's been in with two live opponents:
-Wlad schooled him
-He looked pretty good against a fat, stationary Toney
Not the type of performances you would expect from a guy that's supposed to unify the division

I think Peter could easily unify the belts, if Toney unifies them first then fights samuel.

Peter will of course destroy the glass-jawed Maskaev. It will be a big surprise, imo, if the fight goes more than a couple of rounds.
And sorry Klit fans, he knocks out the injured, inactive and aging Vitali, too. I called it exactly right on Brewster for ALL the same reasons. Older fighters with injury histories don't generally come back and beat younger fighters who have improved and are in their primes! :-(
Ibragimov is VERY beatable. If Ray Austin can put him on the canvas, Peter will most likely keep him there. Heck, I'd give Holyfield a decent shot against him. Chagaev is better, but I'm not sold on him either. Good lord, he beat VALUEV to get the title!
The only REAL threat to Peter unifying is Wlad. They are the only two guys out there right now I could see unifying. Peter has gotten better since their first fight, and even though Wlad's improved and addressed some of his stamina issues, his shaky chin still remains, and imrpoved Peter might very well be able to take advantage of it. Right now, I make that a "pick 'em" fight.

ya how can you call him useless when he knocked out hasim rahman twice! seriously, peter definitely has his hands full with maskaev and i think he will underestimate maskaev and get ko'd

Let's see if Peter can get by Maskaev, first.
That's going to be a tall order, right there.
But if Peter does manage to take Maskaev's title, Vitali will be the roadblock in Peter's road to unification.
But I think Maskaev will be a harder fight for Peter than most seem to think, and I am leaning towards Maskaev to decision Peter.

Povetkin > any versions of Sam Peter. It's just a question of time....Unfortunately Povektin is not yet part of the top 10. Soon though...

Peter will be closer to reaching gatekeeper status than unified heavyweight champ two years from now.
yes, but it appears Zakman is on the Peter express, if he manages to get by Oleg he will be pummled by vitaly and that's going to be a great fight I'm looking forward to.

I think Peter is pretty overrated
Peter is incredibly limited. He's slow, plodding, flat-footed, wide punching and has no defense. People say he's improved, I don't buy it. Toney has looked shot to pieces in his lost two fights including the Peter rematch, and looked lackluster against an equally lackluster Hasim Rahman before the first Peter fight. The only fight where Toney has looked halfway sharp in his last 4 fights was the first one against Peter, where many of us thought he deserved to win. In the second rematch, Toney looked completely shot, his reflexes were gone. Peter fans can hype it up all they want, I don't put great stock in a young, fresh heavyweight winning a couple fights against a faded, overweight ex-middleweight without much power, and struggling mightily to do so in the first fight
Wlad will outbox Peter even more comprehensively in a rematch, or even knock him out. It won't even be close
If Vitali comes back and is 85% of what he was before his retirement, he'll beat Peter too. A plodding, flat footed, wide puncher with no defense is tailor made for Vitali's straight and accurate punches. Vitali will disfigure Peter's face badly and stop him or win a wide UD if he's anywhere near where he was

the guy needs more activity plain and simple....
I remember a busy mike tyson in the 80s,I am not certain but I think the guy fought like twice a month - and KO'd everyone, thats a path to a great champion, ear biting and rape aside.

I love these hindsight dig ups.
Some here were sooo sure Peter would be the next big thing in boxing, and now some are even calling him a bum.
Of course he's neither, but it's still funny.
