View Full Version : My ultimate outrage at this silly, silly gym worker

I was teaching my mate how to dead lift, and he comes over and says "at any stage of training that exercise will do you no good". I was going red at this point because I dead lift a lot, and it's a fucking great exercise. He suggested that I was not ready for power lifting activities and should concentrate on building up other muscles. Don't get me wrong, but doesn't the dead lift build every fucking muscle there is? apart from your eye lids maybe.

I didn't bother arguing with him, but the fact that he said I was not ready really annoyed me. Judge for yourself if I am not ready:

My weight 161
Bench 1RM: 180
Squat 1RM: 248
Dead lift 1RM: 260

My bench is kind of stalling atm, but my other lifts just keep getting bigger.

I was fucking insulted.

Squat 1RM: 248

dont worry about your mate, deadlift is one of the most basic excercises and should be done at the begining of most routines

sorry, my dodgy kg to pound conversions lol. One rep max in kilos for squat is 112

There's nothing wrong with my ego either. Just when some weed tells me I'm not ready for dead lifts when I've been doing them for months, I take it kind of personally. Most of the gym users there are proper meat heads doing endless reverse bicep curls and uselss things like that.

Why would you be insulted? I'd listen to what he has to say then explain why he's wrong.

he acutally said the dead lift was useless. where do you begin to explain how that is wrong lol? I didn't want to argue though because he normally gives me a little discount because I'm a student.

Many people have said to me deadlift is bad longterm as it messes your back up and squats are bad for your knees but i still do em :D

Deadlifts, cleans and squats are THE KINGS of any serious weight training program.

The guy was probably having a laugh and primarily intending to insult you.

With the deadlift it is true though that it is sometimes best increased indirectly (unlike the bench press and squat).

It is not correct to say that it will not benefit at "any stage" however.

But yeah - you probably looked quite silly.

P.s. I'm not knocking you, keep up the good work.

Yeah thanks guys. By the time my friend had turned up I had finished training so I just thought I'd help him out, spot him and so on, and this guy comes along and really rained on my parade lol. Are my squat and dead lift any good, considering I've only been doing heavy-weight sets for like 4 weeks?

This guy in my gym was probably coming it at from a body builder/spice boy angle. Most of the guys here just want big biceps and traps. Someone took over the only smith machine just to do shoulder shrugs. The idea to train just to look good in a t-shirt on a saturday night is just rubbish. these are the guys who don't want to put in the effort and resort to substances/steroids whatever. You don't see girls in clubs going "tense your erector spinae", not its always the biceps. Try throwing a decent punch with that water melon stuck in your arm. RRrRR. I'm so angry.

NO COMMERCIAL GYM will condone cleans, squats, deadlifts.
They require SOME technique and some idiot might hurt himself doing them, so it's safer to get people working machines.

Edited!

I'm on 195lbs on the bench from a 3" board, 245 squat and 310 DL.

Lol Completely Untrue. I'm a trainer at Urban Active (Former Golds in Oh, Ky, and Ia) and I make all of my clients who are reasonably fit do clean & press, squat atg, deadlifts, and snatches.

And MrSmall why insult the kid? Your lifts aren't exactly elite.

I like deadlifts. I tried moving my arms out wider the other day and hurt my back though. It's definitely something that needs perfect form, especially when you start lifting near your max (in my case that's only 110kg, but that still kills me).

learning to do olympic lifts take skills and alot of training, most boxers dont have time for that.

Yeah. The only one from the list earlier I really do are squats, though I'm going to see if this powerlifter I know from the gym I work at can help show me how to do them and make sure I do them right, I'm considering adding them to my weight routine.

you should read joe defranco's site, he believes olympic lifts are not necessary to to gain explosiveness, any movement performed fast with 50-70% of your 1RM will train explosive strength,

or you could also try ross enamats way, he thinks the dumbell variations of the olympic lifts are alot easier and safer, which i agree with.

I should note I was looking to add cleans. But I lift to build mass and physical strength, everything else I do with my boxing training.

I love Joe Defranco's stuff. I agree that Olympic Lifts are not necessary; but they will improve explosiveness regardless, and help add a decent portion of muscle to your frame.

no he didn't. I dont think you should be banned because you do a certain kind of exercise. that would just suck.

Deadlifts are solid.. period. i was big into weightlifting in my mid 20's (5 years ago, before I caught the boxing fever) and at one point I hit a plateau where I could not get any bigger and a big dog in the gym told me to do heavy deadlifts once or twice a week, and within 2 weeks my arms grew as well as every other muscle, I was jumping higher on the b ball court and just over all much stronger... If I had the time i would still be doing them.. Just do them properly so you do not get injured. They will help your overall power, and explosiveness, without a doubt...
