View Full Version : What's next for Bute after Joppy?

I know Bute's shouldn't look passed Joppy even tho he will most likely win that fight. But I'm not Bute and neither are you so I guess it should be okay for us to look ahead.
I was foolishly hoping for a fight with Jermain Taylor for Bute but it looks like Taylor might be fighting RJJ.
Just a few months ago the name that was put forward as a possible opponent for Bute's second title defense was Librado Andrade. But that name is probably off the table now that Andrade will be fighting in an IBF Title Eliminator against Robert Stieglitz sometime in March.
In my opinion, Bute should try to land a fight with Jeff Lacy on the undercard of Mosley-Judah. Lacy is a GBP guy, he still has a name and it would help hype the fight with Andrade later in the year.
Bute - Lacy in May
Bute - Andrade in August or September

How is Joppy getting a title shot in the first place? Bute should have a better opponent.

How is Joppy getting a title shot in the first place? Bute should have a better opponent.
1. NOT RATED
2. Vitaly Tsypko - Injured
3. Jurgen Brahmer - In line for WBO eliminator or vacant title
4. Robert Stieglitz - IBF Eliminator against Andrade
5. Librado Andrade - IBF Eliminator against Stieglitz
6. Jean Pascal - Not interested... fighting Miranda next
7. Edison Miranda - Fighting Pascal
8. Mikkel Kessler - Wasn't ranked at the time the opponent was choosen and too dangerous for first defense.
9. Alejandro Berrio - Just got KOed by Bute
10. Sakio Bika - Lost to Bute in IBF eliminator
11. Jeff Lacy - Said no or was busy
12. Allan Green - Said NO!!!!!
13. Crisitian Sanavia - Unavailable
14. Danillo Haussler - Unavailable
15. Karoly Balzsay - Wasn't ranked

Yep! He turned down 3x the money he get for fighting on ESPN. :rofl
He should fight Kessler, but he won't.

He ain't ready. Kessler too good. No point throwing himself to the wolves for the sake of it. Bute said he hopes to be ready this time next year. This fight NEEDS to happen in 2009 - no excuses of any kind accepted.:good

Maxime, we both know it's not so much whom he should fight but whom he can fight.
Not a fan of a Lacy fight, to be honest, unless he fights four times this year, one of these fights being Taylor.
Pretty much the same goes for Allan Green; in fact, I'd prefer Green.
Next fight could easily be against winner of Andrade v. Stieglitz - the mandatory.
Miranda? Would he take it?
Taylor would be perfect, after Joppy, before Andrade, or after Andrade. If only Taylor would take it!:?

The truth is Miranda wanted the fight but Bute would not take it. That is why Miranda is fighting Pascal! Don't act like Miranda is busy. There is still no contract with Pascal, and there never was. It has just been talk since there are no other options.

Pantera2000, the only man Bute's ducked so far is Kessler; he said he wasn't ready for an opponent of his calibre; recently, he said he hoped he'd develop and improve enough by Spring 2009 to face someone like Kessler.

I am not saying Bute ducked him. I am saying that there was talk from Miranda's promoter to Bute's promoter and they could not get the fight to happen. Whether it was a financially or something else, I dont know. I just know that was one fight Miranda's team was looking into when Bute did not have an opponent and they couldnt make it happen.
I would tend to beleive it had to do with the fact that there was no TV coverage in the USA, and since they couldnt get that to happen there was not enough money for the fight.
Maybe I wordered it to harsh that 'Bute would not take it'. I should have said 'They could not make it happen'.

Miranda should have taken the title shot if offered, with or without a TV deal; I'm sure there was a lot of money on the table even without it. Bute is selling 13,000+.

Like I said, I dont know the details. I know Miranda is far from being all about the money, he just wants the big fights and a title shot.
I would also imagine, since it was not a mandatory, that Bute's promoter would have demanded some options. This is something I highly doubt Warriors would give considering how highly they think of Edison and know he will get his shot at 168lbs soon enough.

I don't know, but I would be surprised if they had asked for options. InterBox is not a big club and couldn't offer enough money to Miranda's promoter or enough of an incentive to Miranda to get them to sign an options deal.

I know a lot how these contracts are made in boxing. Almost always a nonmandatory fight is given to a challenger only with options. (Quintana is a good example). This is done so the promoter can protect his title in case his fighter loses. Unless the challanger is a big name that can bring along more income (by bringing better TV money, etc) to the table than there is no incentive for the promoter to give his champion the tougher nonmandatory fight.
In Miranda's case, he has a decent name, but apparently he could not get HBO or SHO to give him the date and bring in the money for a fight with Bute. This is probably because Miranda, after the Pavlik loss, lost a decent amount of steam and HBO has little interest in Bute.
So, in a nutshell, there was no incentive for Bute's team to offer a fight to Miranda for any amount of money. They were better off getting an easier win for their man if Miranda's promoter was not giving up the options.

My ultimate wish/best case scenario list would be:
31st of May: Taylor on on the Mosley v. Judah Las Vegas card
20th of September: Andrade on the Mayweather v. de la Hoya card in Las Vegas
mid December: the best of Miranda/Green/Froch v. Inkin loser in Montreal
mid-late March 2009: KESSLER as the main attraction in Las Vegas
early June 2009 fight: contender in Montreal
September: Mundine or Froch v. Inkin winner in Montreal
February 2010: Pavlik in Las Vegas
May 2010: Pascal in Montreal:tired :tired :tired :tired :tired - dream on! Yes, I know!
But that would be amazing!!!

Bute is the most popular Candian fighter with the Canadian posters here on ESB, bar none. He is also more popular with non-Canadians. Even objective, good, experienced posters like sean like Bute a lot. Bute is a player at 168 but it's hard to match-make for him with all that's going on at the moment with everyone scrambling for Calzaghe's dropped belts, so it makes sense to "plan" ahead.
Why don't you get off Maxime's dick and post something useful?

He ain't good enough to have a decent chance against Kessler. Said so himself after the Calzaghe v. Kessler fight. So what would have been the point of fighting him? To prove it to the whole world? Him and his trainer think he can improve enough this year to have a good shot against Kessler, so they're taking their time.
Yes! Joppy fight is a DISGRACE! Joppy is shot and not even in his prime was he one of the best, yes. But, please suggest someone better Bute could have fought in his first gimme defence, except Kessler, whom Bute is ducking for now.
Hit me with some name that was considerably better than Joppy and could possibly help Bute get fights against hyped Americans like Taylor in the future.
They could have picked some good journeyman or a shot former champ like Joppy, who is a name in the US. Whom would you have picked?
No, I am not happy with Joppy! I wanted someone much better. And if InterBox come up with another Joppy-like fellow in the next fight, I will be scandalised, whether they have an excuse or not.

Whom would you have picked? i hear you and it makes sense business wise. i think they're being overly cautious IMO. Kessler's not prime Tyson, just a top smw in this current era. i guess bute's conceding he's ready to mix with the best of the current division (again kessler's not some certified ATG). sad he's a title holder. who's gonna watch the joppy fight in the us (where you say he has a name)? who's gonna give bute any respect for beating him at this stage -- probably few.

You'd be surprised! American fans seems to value victories about NAME have-been Americans more than against live, hungry, unbeaten, dangerous contenders. This is why Joppy is preferable from a business point of view to a Bozic, Sartison or Mendy. Hopefully, Joppy will have enough left in the tank to give Bute something to think about and learn from for 6-8 rounds.
But Bute is certainly NOT overcautious in not stepping up against Kessler. If you think he is, you are badly underrating Kessler. Kessler is borderline elite, or A- and Bute is no better than very good, or B+. Big difference.

Kessler would have been available for a February fight against Bute, no problem! Kessler called Bute out, more or less, as early as last year; Bute passed. Kessler would have recovered from his hand injury and would have taken Bute on in Bute's back yard as early as end of February no problem, had he been given the chance. Kessler was desperate to fight Bute!

Kessler just got a hand surgery...
He was inviting Bute for the summer more than the spring, and yes, Bute declined. And yes, people don't rush to fight Kessler. As Froch avoided Bute.
A dangerous boxer without a title does have trouble to find good opponents. That's why Bute is stucked with Joppy. Interbox wanted visibility in the USA, he was the only one with a name who accepted. I don't like this fight more than you do, I did not buy tickets this time. But Bute is already inviting Taylor to fight him, so I'm not ready to say he's ducking good opponents.

Only man Bute is ducking 168 and south is Kessler. However, he gave a strong hint that Kessler is the ultimate target for him, the man he hopes to fight one day - he hinted at spring 2009.
Kessler didn't just have hand-surgery, but he could have had that earlier, if he had found a fight or he could have postponed it after a fight...
