View Full Version : Blackistone on Pavlik

Kevin Blackistone used his 30 second face time on Around the Horn today to talk about Kelly Pavlik. He was stating how good it is for boxing to have a bright new champ who is humble and well mannered. I agree completely and think that Kelly Pavlik is the best thing that boxing has to offer to the masses out of any other fighter. Thoughts?

I'm a huge fan of Pavlik and his relationship with Jack Lowe is really a beautiful thing. They just keep it fucking real. There was a point in between rounds of the rematch with Taylor where he tells Kelly to be more active and not stand in front of him. Kelly looked at him and calmy asked, "Did he win that round too?" And Jack, just straight up said "Yeah." And there wasn't an ounce of panic between them, just absolute understanding that he needed to change things up in oreder to regain control of the fight. And that's exactly what he did. That real honesty and trust is very rare in today's world of boxing.

It's great to see such good, gritty guys make it.

I don't understand... I mean I like Pavlik (Hell, I'm from Ohio), but they make it sound as though Taylor was some sort of major douche bag who talked shit all the time. His performances may have been subpar recently, but he was always a well mannered individual.

Pavlik is a perfect example of a true Champ. Not like fucking prima donnas of the past and present.

I agree well said, I have heard people say that Kelly needs to get a bigger name trainer because Jack Lowe simply doesn't have the credentials to be a lasting championship trainer. I think this would be crazy, those guys mesh so well together and they are definetly on the same page. If it ain't borken then please don't fix it.

Realistically we could not ask for better match making than Pavlik/Taylor. I think they will probably meet again one day, and even though JT is down by 2, we will all be just as excited as we were the last 2 times they met! However, for the time being I think they need to stay away from each other for a while, or they'll both be "walkin' on their heels" and suffering from pugilistic dimentia!! They seem to really bring out the best in each other, but to many wars and ya end up like Bobby Chacon.

Kelly is a class act, and I am proud to be an ardent fan. I was never a JT fan until Pav/JT I. However, from here on out I'll be rooting for JT, unless, of course, he's fighting Pavlik!

Pavlik is a very exciting fight indeed.

It's a shame Calzaghe was not able to be seen more earlier in his career, so many years wasted. He is getting older now, but it has not seemed to hurt him at all. Calzaghe also had some hand problems earlier in his career. I enjoy watching him fight.

Yes, being an american I was only really exposed to his past 5 or 6 fights. It is a shame and I wish that I would have known more about JOe earlier

You can buy fights on DVD. I used to buy fights from Blood, Sweat & Tears. Americans are missing so many good fights dues to the USTV boycott. Instead, we get to see many very sick mismatches, sparring sessions which are very boring. An undefeated fighter Vs. a wino from an alley.

Pavlik is good for boxing and certainly has some momentum going. I actually heard an a.m talk show, and not a sports one, talking about the fight yesterday. They weren't the most knowledgeable bunch of boxing fans but they were following Pavik because he's from Ohio and said they would continue to do so.

He really needs to capitalize on his momentum though. Stay active, fight the best, and most importantly...remain exciting. So he can fight a Duddy, Trinidad,Mayorga, or some lesser opponent this summer but he has to seek out the real challenges after that. It would be a shame to see him lose this high he is riding.

Duddy can be exciting, but he will get knocked out by Pavlik. It's time we need to see exciting boxers on TV esp. So many fights are so boring, I esp. hate it when undercards on PPV are boring.

Wow thats a good question, and one that would be very hard for me. I never really let nationalities get in my way of choosing who to root for, but for those two fighters I would have to say that the one closest to home would get the nod, Pavlik. But I think it would be a great fight all the way, but if they fought within the next 2 years I would probably have to think Joe would take it by SD or maybe even UD.

What are your thoughts on a possible match-up? It's funny ESPN.com on its boxing section already has a poll out asking who would win haha. A bit pre-mature i think

Yeah he really should, his tall lanky frame suits him well at 160. He isn't too lanky that he can't handle body shots and yet he is long enough to have great extention and power. He will eventually be tempted by a big name to go to 168 but I agree for now he needs to stay.

lets say he makes good fights and they are exciting, of course he would be good for boxing. Hey! being humble and lowkey really dont have a thing to do with being an exciting fighter that people want to see.

The best fighters out there are all capable of doing the same thing. Its what you do in the ring that counts. He is good so far because he is willing to take the good fight and make it exciting. lets see how he does from now on.

I will choose to disagree with you on that. I think what a fighter does outside of the ring has loads to do with the popularity of the sport and how a champion is beloved by fans. I am from Kalamazoo Michigan about 45 minutes from Grand Rapids MI where Floyd is from. There are more Pavlik fans here by 10 fold than Pretty Boy.

When I say he is good for boxing, yes he is extremely exiting to watch and very entertaining. But he is also good for the sport by providing a role model for young boxers to look up to. Most parents wouldn't want their kids falling in love with mike tyson and wanting to be like him. But if i was a parent and my kid liked Pavlik I would have no problem with them wanting to model their sportsmanship after him.

Pavlik's personality is good for boxing, he is down to earth and does not run his mouth, really nice for a change. I like the fact that he respects the fans enough to work so very hard in training and in his fights.
