View Full Version : A call to BOXING fans

I am new to this forum but have been talking boxing for all of this decade. I've noticed a strong trend on boxing forums where people become fans of a fighter and then decide that guy can never lose. This, seemingly has hit it's apex with the Mayweather vs Hatton and now the Hopkins vs Calzaghe fights. Most of the people picking Joe to KO Hopkins (not beat, but DECIMATE) seem to have a Calzaghe avatar and/or hail from Whales or somewhere not far from it. The same thing happens with a lot of Manny Pac fans, of PR fans who think the fighter from their homeland, or maybe just their favorite despite ethnicity, is beyond flaw and cannot possibly lose a fight. EVER.
What happened to boxing fans who have favorites but understand that that favorite, who they connect with and follow throughout the sport, could possibly lose? I can appreciate supporting one of your own, but shouldn't some perspective come into play at some point?
Pacquaio is my favorite fighter on the planet but I am mad concerned about the rematch with Marquez, and have been ever since the first fight ended. I had Pac winning a razor-thin decision that was so close I'd have no problem with a draw or a close win for Marquez. Yet there's Marquez fans thinking Pac fans are retards for thinking Pac will win the rematch, and Pac fans thinking the same of Marquez. WTF? Pac knocked him down three times in less than three minutes, is it blasphemy to think it might be possible for him to keep him down this time? No, nor is it crazy to think Marquez might be able to keep some of that momentum he had after figuring out how to deal with Pac's agression. Yet many fans of each seem to think so. Pavlik is another of my faves, but I knew damn well he could have lost last weekend because I don't throw all of my "faith" behind a fighter and yell and scream at the top of my lungs if someone suggests they might lose.
There's some really smart posters on this forum that seem to be shouted down by obsessive fans at every turn. I know I'm not the only one here who'd like more straight boxing discussion without all of this "my guy CAN'T lose" mentality.

Hopkins doesn't get dominated by ANYONE. He is a master of his craft and knows the tricks of the trade. Joe is in for a surprise.

on the MONEY!
Everyone is human and can lose on any given night to anybody! See Tyson-Douglas, Lewis-Rahman, Klitschko-Sanders. Some boxing fans are just immature and think their man is unworldly and unbeatable. I swear that Mayweather's fans think he could move up to Heavyweight and KO Klitschko, then decision Jesus Christ himself in the same night...
And PacDbest is on record stating Pac can soundly beat Hatton, Mayweather, and ODLH.
They're all f*cking crazy.

I agree Hopkins is just to savvy to be dominated by anyone. And anyone who thinks Calzaghe will KO Hopkins doesn't know boxing.

There certainly are some Calzaghe fans here who seem to think that way.
