I am very new to this amazing sport. I've been watching boxing since I was young and always loved it. This may seem like a long post, but I feel some background is needed for anyone to give me some worthwhile advice.

I started watching MMA and boxing about age 9. The MMA made me get into wrestling which I've been doing since about that time. I've been pretty successful (this season I have a 17-3 record) at the 189 and 215 weight classes (I jump between those weights alot).

I just recently started a want to participate in boxing though. I haven't started formal training yet though I did do a sparring match in a bar last Friday. Frankly, I got my ass beat. I went in there "brawling" and he was 26 and did boxing while he was in prison. I hung out with him afterwards and he seemed pretty cool telling me that I have the guts and the build for boxing, it's just the training I lack.

And that's why I come to you. If someone can help me out here about what kind of bags, gloves, pads, training regime, etc. I needI'd be very appreciative. I also would like to find a trainer in the Southern Illinois region. I've looked in my area and the closest boxing club/gym is in Belleville, which would be quite a drive.

Thank you for any help, I love the forums.

the main advice u will get on the forum, or from any boxer in general, is to join a gym. dont worry about equipment, the only thing i needed after joining my gym was a mouthpiece. just train hard, and good luck. it will pay off.

But as I stated, the closest gym is about 50 miles away. And being 16 with no income, the gas for that would eat me as if I were a doughnut in Ethiopia.

At this point the only equipment I have is my body and a whole lot of dedication.

Joe Frazier's book, Box Like The Pros, will give you some guidlines on training and how to evaluate trainers and gyms. Nevertheless, books and videos will only take you to the first stage, to progress from there you will need a good trainer.

Look at the thread "complete beginner's guide to boxing". A skipping rope would be a good start - 2 min rounds with one minute rest in between. Then build it up from there. You can buy a heavy bag also, but never hit with out gloves - it's not hard or clever; you'll fuck your hands up. You will need someone to teach how to throw proper punches however - if you're training alone from scratch you will probably pick up bad technique and habbits. Maybe this guy you sparred with could help you out?

Also running is great - maybe 20 mins if you're beginner then build up. Also as you've pointed out, all you have is your body weight. Just start doing press ups to build upper body strength - there are several variations including diamond press ups, clap press ups and so on.
