Definitely that's not illegal . . . that's just another way of deflecting punches. Wlad is so much bigger and Sultan's jabs were coming in too low so there's no other direction to deflect it but downwards.

I didn't think it was illegal, but im not an official ref or anything so I just had to ask cause there are trolls running around saying its illegal

I am a WBC qualified referee and Judge.
It is not illegal. its actually basic defense 101

 definately not illegal. mainly the reason for the odd angle is the height difference.
when in a fight, it's a good idea to deflect shots or at least try to get through another fighters guard in order to score.
if wladimir tried to break sultans arm in a armlock then yeah, it's illegal.

It seemed overdone and pointless to me, Ibragimov's jab wasn't even close to reaching the target and Klitschko didn't accomplish much off of it.

What it does is stops Sultan setting his weight on his back foot after the jab in order to throw a powerful effective shot with his left.
The paw down keeps the weight on the front foot and totally nullifies the left

I was employed by the WBC....not anymore. Not willing to be what you just said is the main reason i am not employed anymore.

Yeah pointless to you . . . not to Wlad.
You know what Wlad is doing? He is removing Sultan's to rythm to throw combo's and creating an opening for himself throw his counter.

It effectively discouraged Sultan from throwing hardly any jabs at all. I believe Sultan was credited with 16 jabs that actually landed.

Don't you think that the ref might've warned Klitschko for doing it then?

It shouldnt even be a debate...its not illegal and it highlights your ignorance if you think it is.
Go take a judges course. Pawing is boxing defense 101.
Why should it be illegal?

No you cannot do it with the palm or underside of the glove I suggest you go do some more exams.
Are there any links to some boxing rules manuel?

So to anyone saying its illegal: would you like to explain yourself? Cause the one thing I see in common here is that guys who claim its illegal don't say WHY it is

just a typical manny steward spoiling tactic instead of the usual hugging.

That shit that Wlad was doing isn't a hook, jab, uppercut, or cross. I think it should be illegal. He was also intentionally stepping on Sultan's foot.
I wonder if Wlad's management/HBO would put him in there with a fighter that has decent skills, size, speed and good power. Too bad there isn't anybody out there now with those in one package. Sultan came to fight but was just too small. After the third, he knew he wasn't going to be able to get anything going -- you could tell by his body language.

I believe the man you are talking about is Povetkin :deal

Watch the first round again -- Wlad was hitting Sultan's right glove down. He was not parrying Sultan's jab as much as he was hitting down his glove just to bring it down for his jab to get through.
A parry is a parry. That was borderline slapping. Still a big win for Wlad. He is the best heavy in the division and has been for a while.

Hey cardstars, Povetkin is a good prospect. I don't think he is ready for THE best heavyweight in the division just yet though.
BTW I thought that referee Wayne Kelly (same ref as tonight) warned Byrd about hitting Wlad's gloves like that in their second fight :deal
Neither Sultan nor his corner had a problem with the Kelly allowing it so the point is moot I guess.

Yeah, in the first round Wlad was doing his best to rip Sultan's supraspinatus muscle and give him a rotator cuff tear.

it looked pretty silly, but if it was illegal i'm sure um, lampley or lewis would say something, not to mention ol'...? silly topic - but i abstain. i had a similar "techincal" question about referee Cortez actually hitting Hatton's gloves (smacking them all night, watch the tape), and found out it was legal. i was annoyed to no end, but eh...queensbury......i was not alive at the time...
Irländsk - nice avatar! come to daddy....
