These guys sign with King and are then surprised at how bad they get it.
What do you expect?

Without Don King there would have been no Rumble in the Jungle.
Don King has put on some simply brilliant cards. And also has royally screwed many many fighters.

Well to be fair the damage is also perpetuated by fighters themselves who
a. sign with him
b. start to bitch about being screwed by him (they made the mistake)
c. ask for more money and stall (you can't do that and expect to earn more money after inactivity). Ideally fighters should have their next fight done and signed 1 week after the first. That time frame needs to include like a month or a few weeks for vacation, and then back to training.
These guys sign with King and are then surprised at how bad they get it.

yea but the sport is pretty much controled by him or his friends so if you want anything to get done you pretty much have to go through him....
then we read about boxers like spinks working at mc'ds while fucks like this are living it up, i would shave his head and make him return all that money he screwed out of boxers :fire :fire

Parts of boxing are, you're right. Guys do deal with him all the time and not get screwed though.
Larry Holmes was quoted as saying something like "I made more money being screwed by Don King, than being treated fairly by any other promoter".
Thing is, some boxers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. And they're gong to be taken advantage of in any walk of life. Look at Tyson.
Yes, King fucked him over. But there's no way he should be broke.

That was an example. He's put on some great cards, with multiple title fights in one night, on the same card.
How many of those do we get now?

No. Without Don King he wouldn't have had 300 million in the first place, let alone 600.

Compare the crowds in Germany Vs. the crowds in America. Compare Calzaghe Vs. anyone in England, etc. Don King vs. Don King fighters has ruined boxing.

I don't think he has done as much damage as many people appear to think he has.
IMO guys like Arum and others are just as bad.

07-11-2007, 01:58 AM
but you get my point? it doesnt matter if its 300 mill 600 mill or 10 bucks the point is the same king still fucked him out of his money......

King fucked him because King is a brand.
No other promoter is a brand name.
Its like wearing Gucci shoes or other expensive clothing.
It says something about you.
So King takes a big cut and steals and shit (and i know he does) cause the value of his brand added to the fighter is what he banks on.
I think its bullshit but that is how they think.
so what your saying is that no matter who he has fucked, the sport of boxing is still better because of him?
i dont know maybe your right.....we'll never know because i am sure we have missed out on alot of fights because he wasnt making enough...

don king made boxing very dynamic with personalities.
but it is bad how he exploits fighters. he thinks, eats, and shits money. i don't even think he knows much about boxing but he knows what sells.
guys like him will make money out of anything it doesnt matter what it is.. its a fucking skill and he is a master no doubt about that

I dunno, it's really tough to measure. I mean, is this relatively speaking to how much damage Bob Arum has done, or just how much damage in general? Arum's no more scrupulous than King, it's just that King is better at his job. To put things in context, one has to take into consideration the fact that boxing has always been associated with unsavory characters from the very beginning especially at its height in popularity. Jake Lamotta threw his fight with Billy Fox. Many claim that Sonny Liston took a dive. These were things that were orchestrated by underworld figures. Nothing can be more damaging to the integrity of the sport than staged fights. Panama Lewis might have played a role in Pryor's first victory over Arguello (amongst other shameful claims to fame). Lord knows some of these judges have been tampered with. There are too many hands in the pot to to blame the shitty taste of tonight's dinner on solely Don King himself, although he might have been handling the seasoning. Our sport needs Jesus. :angel

I'm 100% certain that De La hoya & Mayweather will tell you differently.

No damage compared to Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya.
As well as the plethora of old stars past their best days rehashing their names for a quick buck. Fucking retire already!

No. Without Don King he wouldn't have had 300 million in the first place, let alone 600.Actually, without King, Tyson would've had a good chance to become the first billionaire athlete in history...

By ripping off guys like Ali, Holmes etc (stars of the past) he has discouraged young athletes from seriously taking up the sport. . . Football players are treated much better in general than boxers. Of course it aint just King, he's just the most visible.

You seriously think that young athletes don't go into boxing because Don King screwed some guys over in the 1970's?
I think young guys go into sports other than boxing because baseball, basketball, football, etc., offer a lot more opportunities for making money and getting an education. And all of those sports are easier, relatively speaking, than boxing. IMO.

its a mix of all those reasons. . . If I had a 12 year old son who liked baseball, football, boxing and golf. . . I would encourage him to look at all the other three before boxing . . .yes, even golf.
Im not saying its all on DK, but he sure as hell has been a good part of the problem.

Considering the amount of fighters (before King and those not affiliated with him) who died penniless, it's hard to hold King out for special scorn.
