Yeah, he's got some technical flaws going on, but god save whatever division he's in when he hits his full potential as a professional boxer.
Unless this guy has a bad chin, there is no doubt we're looking at a future TOP P4P fighter here. Can't think of anybody with as little professional experience as him at this point who has bulldozed through the type of journeyman/gate keeper opposition like an A level fighter would as a tune up.
I don't know why.... but I have suspicious views of a potential chin disaster that I hope is wrong.:think

He is a tremendous prospect. I think he should stay at 130 for awhile, because he appears to be fully filled out there.
Physically, Gamboa reminds me of a cross between Shane Mosley and Roy Jones. Now, those are lofty comparisons, but he has the same relative muscular rigidity of Mosley -- for a fast guy, that is -- and throws short, economical punches.
He obviously bears similiarites to Jones on the defensive side, dropping his hands and seeming to anticipate punches rather than merely relying on his exceptional reflexes. Hamed comparisons may enter in as well.
What scares me a little is that I'm not totally sold on his footwork yet, and at the point he does get caught, it'll be interesting to see how he responds. What's apparent already, however, is that only a big-time and seasoned fighter will be able to handle him.
I don't have any opinion on his chin at this point.

If Gamboa was a stock, I'd put my life savings on the guy. IMO, I think the guy is a better prospect than Hamed ever was, and I'm a huge Hamed fan. He's faster all-round, more athletic and probably more disciplined, coming from Cuba. But I agree, it'll be interesting to see how he reacts when he gets wobbled.

Reflexes.
The guy has the best reflexes I've seen in a good minute...and that's something when Roy Jones and FMJ roam the earth.

His chin isn't his problem imo.
He never fought past a few rounds and hasn't (yet) learned how to use his energy economical when it's necessary to go 10 or more rounds.
He's banging away, sure, but what will he do if his opponent is still there after 8 rounds? The future will tell! I hope the best

We will see if he is chinny when as soon as he steps up the competition; starting this next month! Rojas is an amazing opponent (considering he is only Gamboas 10th fight). I have full confidence that Gamboa will dispose of him though. Let Yuriorkism begin my brothers
His next opponent Jose Rojas is actually a better puncher than his record indicates and should be able to test Gamboa's chin if he lands any flush shots. Unfortunately Rojas' own chin is very shaky, so he'll probably be knocked out before he lands anything worth talking about.
Gamboa looks very relaxed when exchanging punches and pulling back during dangerous moments, so as of right now there's nothing I see that indicates he has chin problems. His team putting him in with a guy like Rojas this early also shows that they are not worried about his chin. If they had any inside info about chin problems in the past they would never put him in with anything close to a real puncher. Gamboa's personality is Guzman-like and if that means anything, he should at least have a solid chin. :D

Yan Barthelemy also has a ton of potential despite being overlooked.

Very true. It's his lack of power that keeps him lower profile.
Yan Barthelemy also has a ton of potential despite being overlooked.
I can't imagine him being anything close to A level in the future. Besides having zero power, he's pretty sloppy and for a defensive fighter, he gets hit way too much by crap fighters. He also gets frustrated in fights and seems like someone who will have a ton of problems with any good pressure fighter. Barhelemy is a prospect that hasn't shown chin problems, but I would be surprised if he turns out to have a very good chin.

hahaa actually i've never seen Barthelemy fight just throwing his name out there cause he did really well against Gamboa in the amateurs (3-1 if i recall correctly) and comparitively he is getting zero hype. Like KG said its because he isn't knocking em out.
I think this is a big step up for Gamboa and i'm rooting for him even though i still think my boy Linares though 4 years younger would fuck him up bad.
BTW is Gamboa vs Rojas at 130 or 126?

No chance.
Gamboa has the potential to take the title of 'God' from Mijares, anybody with that type of insane supernatural ability isn't losing to a 'decent to good' fighter like Linares.
Gamboa takes out Linares in 2 rounds.

What are you laughing at? Linares would get swarmed by Gamboa's speed and would have little answer, being that the last C level guy he fought was actually landing decent shots on him body and head and 1 of them actually buzzed him, a buzzsaw effort from Gamboa, with little response from a frozen Linares could easily have the fight over in 2 rounds.
Linares is not as good as you think he is. He's quite ordinary.

lol the last C level guy he fought (assuming you are talking about Gameliel Diaz) is the same guy who beat the current IBF featherweight champ 2 years ago and Linares absolutely demolished him. Don't talk like it was a close fight because Diaz basically landed 1 good punch the entire fight and Linares was not even stunned by it.
And Diaz landed that punch when he ran out at the start of the round and lunged for Linares as if he knew it was his only chance. Gamboa does that and he will get double chin checked you can count on that.

It wasn't a close fight, but it also wasn't impressive by Linares. Linares also lacks the timing needed to chin check Gamboa fast enough to not get swarmed.
And don't bring up Guerrero, he's not a very good fighter, I'd easily pick Linares to my dismay over Guerrero and by stoppage.

You are just mad that you didn't spot this guy first. He is different from your "gods" Mijares and Gamboa (who are both absolutely outstanding), but he is easily in the same catagory (maybe better) and is ultimately much more crowd pleasing. A possible Linares/Gamboa clash in a few years is quite exciting to contemplate. I worry that both are promoted in foreign countries, and (especially in the case of Gamboa) may not garner the deserved attention and fan base.

i too was a bit critical about gamboa. though i still think he is rated way to highly in the abd orgs at this point, i do believe that he will be a force in the near future. i think he could beat two of the four abc champs at 130 right now.

You're concerned that Gamboa isn't going to get exposure and a big fanbase, even if he keeps demolishing people with the speed/power combination?
He's already getting exposure and most people pick him over Linares right now, showing the opinion of Gamboa.

For your info i do not rate Linares as a god and do see a few flaws in his defence for example he has a tendancy to pull straight back with his hands down and also sometimes seems to get complacent, however you have to be foolish to think that he has peaked at only 22 years old.
His timing is extremely good.

I don't think that is the case, so let's say he gets 40% better than he is now at his very best. He still loses to the Gamboa of RIGHT NOW, handily.:good

i don't wanna hijack this Gamboa thread but Linares also blocks punches very well, can fight as well off the backfoot as anyone, throws very well to the body, can counterpunch, jab, hook, uppercut, lead with his right, etc. Just his movements are not that sharp.

He's skilled, probably the best at 126 currently, but it's also a very weak division. He completely lacks the physical talent to compete with guys like JMM, Pac, Guzman and soon Gamboa at any point, even if he improves big time.
A young JMM was just that much sharper and that much quicker. Hell, JMM is even quite ahead of Linares in reflexes now.
I think Rocky Juarez would be a good test for Linares and I give Juarez a decent chance to win.

100% my thoughts exactly. Zab Judah looked spectacular and great too on his way up fighting 4 or 6 rounders. It's impossible to say a guy is 'the future of boxing' when he hasn't been past the 6th round yet, and he's only been that far once!
Don't get me wrong, the first time i saw him (against DeJesus) he really made my jaw drop, but let's give the guy some time, and more importantly, some freakin' rounds.
