i love it right at the end! david hayes career is in taters, it would of been taters if he was 36 and lost in that way but not when ur still learning, silly thing to say from the commentator! espically as how david was very ill prepared for that fight , that fight done him good made him train more and focus more on boxing than partys

Thanks for the link Kris, been waiting to see that for years.
Yep, Haye was completely dominant but clearly hadn't trained to go past the 3rd or 4th round. That's evidence of his occasional arrogance (I'm a fan btw).
Credit to Thompson - a guy with his experience probably saw Haye start to breathe heavy and lose his bounce and that he'd just have to try and get through the early bombs.

Jesus could Haye have landed more flush power shots?
Haye's power wont mean anything at heavyweight.
By the way Thompson was 40 years old in this fight!!!!!!!!!

Haye might not be the banger at heavy that he is now, but you are missing some key factors. Firstly he was not training properly when he fought Thompson, he was out clubbing and was not as strong, fit or powerful as he is now.
Secondly he struggles to make Cruiser and finds that his power comes much more naturally at heavy with far less effort.
Finally Thompson was famous for his ability to soak up horrendous punishment and keep coming back. He managed to semi block a lot of the power shots from Haye on the gloves and even though they landed some of the sting was taken out.
Haye hits harder now than he did then, Haye is fitter now than he was then and his overall dedication to the sport is also much improved.

Bit harsh to judge Haye on his 11th pro-fight, arguably in a premature step up in class against a proven resilient warrior and where he stupidly didn't train properly.

Great vid. Haye looked borderline flabby compared to how he looks now!

Wow, let's hear more excuses. What else? Didn't he get enough sleep that night? Wasn't he allowed to eat his favourite spaghetti before the fight? It's got nothing to do with vaseline right?
The matter of fact is he was floored by, among others, a feather-fisted SMW journeyman and stopped by a 40 year old senior citizen. I hear other guys getting bashed all the time for making excuses, why should it be different with Haye?

What are you on about? You know fuck all about me. I have posted here numerous times that Haye has a poor chin, that he will get starched by Wlad. I have followed him since the amateur ranks, and I know exactly how good or bad his chin is and I am not making excuses.
It is very simple, the Thompson fight is a poor way to judge him. Should we judge Wlad on his fight against Ross Purrity?
Should we judge Hopkins on losing his first fight?
Haye was going in with a very resilient, hard hitting veteran. Haye at that time WAS going out clubbing constantly. I have spoken to him as have several of the UK posters, I have asked him about his weaknesses and he is pretty candid about his flaws and about how he was in the past in regards to training.
Simply put, the fact that he did not put away Thompson in his 11th pro fight does not mean his power will be useless at heavyweight.

not bad for a journeyman

Haven't seen that in a while, Haye's composure and finishing skills have improves a lot.
What are you on about? You know fuck all about me.
What are you on about? Did I make an reference to you personally? I know fuck about you and you know fuck about me and that's the way I like it. I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to talk about boxing, this is an internet board ffs.
I am not making excuses.
Well it sounds a lot like excuses for not making excuses.

That's what people do on thos board. You should know how much flak Wlad gets for his losses. Why should Haye be treated any different I asked?

It sure is a great accomplishement beating Eubank twice but I wouldn't call him an ATG, especially at CW.

Thompson was one tough cookie, even at 40 yrs old. The guy seemed to have an infinite capacity to absorb punishment. His previous fight I think was against Sebastian Rothmann ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), the reigning IBO champ at the time and bags more experience than Haye going into the fight. Thompson was on the verge of being stopped in the ninth after shipping punches all night and then BHAM. Rothman was ruined that night and has never been the same boxer since. BTW, anyone got this fight or could upload it to youtube? It is a peach!!!!!
The fight for Haye against Thompson was too early. Haye was simply too green.

his career was in tatters at that point. he has done very well to get to where he is now.
also, people criticise an 'old' Eubank on Calzaghe's resume "he never won another fight after that so he must have been shot". fact is, he had two wars with carl thompson when thompson was 33ish. thompson then went on to cause two upsets against rothman and haye. i think it makes Eubank look better in retrospect.

He never wrote that thompson was an ATG!

There's a world of difference between reasons and excuses.
Haye has a vulnerable chin, thats hardly a secret. But he has improved his discipline greatly in the following years and has benefited greatly from it. Thats a fact. Carl was pretty formidable for a forty year old and was coming of a win over ranked contender Sebastian Rothman. (another come from behind stoppage!) Haye was an out of shape novice at the time. Again a simple fact not an excuse.

No sound...but here's Thompson vs Rothmann, his previous fight before Haye. As others have said, and as often happened with Thompson, he soaks up loads of abuse then strikes back.
Real Rocky stuff. Shame no sound though!
EDIT - damn, they stuck up about 4 rounds but not the ending?! Maybe part 3 will follow, I might give this a seperate thread then...

It's a learning experience. He seems to have came back better prepared to go deeper into a fight. Sometimes, it is best for young promising fighters to get take a loss like this. If they learn and grow from it, they become better Champions in the end.

Boxing is more than just having brute power and a lot of fighters seem to neglect endurance training. If Haye puts on too much muscle at heavyweight he might find himself in the same predicament as this fight.

Hey they've got Thompson - Sellers there.
These two were up and down more than a game of musical chairs. Borderline comedy! Until the end...

Haye was young, full of himself and Thompson showed him the pros isn't the ams. He outtalented Carl but Carl weathered the storm then turned it around. Haye gained vital experience from this. Someone was gonna upset his gravy train. I prefer it was an old British good guy.

VzVLQ1NRQSkComedy?! That was one of the British fights of the decade! Im sure it won domestic honours. That fight was insane. Both were literally flattening each other with stunning power until in the end Thompson simply had no more left. He was GREAT fighter. I dont give a fuck what anyone has to say about the "cat" but he was one of a kind. You dont see many pro`s like him anymore and he is sorely missed.

The story about him getting pissed off with Naz and threatening to pick him up by his ears 'cos of his boasting always has me chuckling.

My big worry for Haye is still his low hanging left. he s not quite tall enough to get away with that at heavyweight imo.:think

I was just about to say that. anyone who says that doesnt know a thing about british boxing. Before he retired Carl was training at my gym in Manchester....one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet. Even at 46 he was fitter than everyone in the gym and hard as fuckin nails. Big respect for the Cat, he's sittin at home after the haye-mac fight thinkin "I beat that man hehe" :D
