Vargas-Mayorga brawl!

A press conference to announce the showdown between Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga erupted in violence today at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA. Don King and Kathy Duva of Main Events were present to announce the bout, which will headline a stellar card that is set to take place on Saturday, September 8th. After both spoke about the anticipation of the bout, which will be held at a catch-weight of 162 pounds, Mayorga took to the dais and began to rant about Vargas being past his prime and how he would knock him out. Mayorga then went on to say he would be doing a favor to Vargas' family by sending Vargas into retirement, which prompted Vargas to stand up. Despite Duva sitting between the two, Mayorga proceeded to smack Vargas across the face, which led to Vargas throwing and landing two right hands to the head. Numerous people rushed the stage in the chaotic brawl that saw Mayorga cut on the cheek and Vargas with a cut on his hand. Both fighters screamed towards one another until Mayorga was led to another room. Vargas has stated that this will be the final bout of his professional career, regardless of the outcome. Mayorga stated that after he defeats Vargas, he will drop down to welterweight and challenge any of the titleholders in that division. (More to come)

Wheres Zakman, I want him to tell me about how MMA uses WWF style promoting again.

That aside, this is getting fucking absurd, quit this canned shit in whatever sport it is, Mayorga isn't kidding anybody anymore, even if this fight was still meaningful to the rankings.

I was always a Vargas fan, though after what I saw against SSM. I was convinced retirement was his best option. This matchup is intriguing, you can always count on Mayorga to start shit:good

I'd love to see El Feroz beat his ass, but he's gonna have to look much better than he did vs Mosley. I'll be thoroughly disgusted with a loss to Mayorga, whom I find to be one of the most detestable pieces of doghsit in boxing.

Fight should be interesting, is there a Mexican/Nicaraguan rivalry like Mexican/Puertorican ?

2 Tito victims going at it. Should be great while it lasts. :yep

These Cali based fighters should fight at Staples Center more often. Like Vargas, Mosley, Margarito, etc.

I don't get why some people are over-analyzing this with the.. " why is this fight happening? ".

It's happening because it's going to be fucking entertaining you dumbasses.

Granted both are past their best, but nevertheless expect both guys to have quite an entertaining brawl. People who can't accept anything less than the " masterful " displays of boxing from the likes of Floyd Mayweather need not watch. :good

come on man, 2 fighters that know they cant compete at the elite level are facing each other for us fans.....a real dangerous fight that has no meaning to their legacies....strictly for the fans...i really respect that...i mean, really, they can be out there fighting lesser opponents until they get another title shot....but they said FUCK IT, lets do this shit right now

At least Vargas went after his ass(and landed a punch to the face) after Mayorga was talking about his wife unlike Oscar who just sat down and shut up the whole time.(But we all know what happened afterwards):yep

well oscar has an image to maintain and if he'd let loose and punched mayorga during the press conference it would forever change peoples opinion of him. besides, he's too classy a guy to let a guy like mayorga make him lose control. and yes, he did do his talking in the ring.

I lost a lot of respect for Vargas when he helped kidnap that 15-year-old kid... Granted the kid was having quite a bit of fun, and Vargas didn't exactly help kill him, but still...

I wish Vargas never took the fight, what if he loses? he makes some money and walks away, remembered as the guy who got schooled by Trinidad(although he should've won:-(), Oscar, Mosley(twice), AND the "almighty" Mayorga.
He's really not remembered for the guy he is, a guy that beat Winky Wright ffs.

You can say so, but if Vargas wanted to show real class he should´ve let his fists speak only on sept. 8.

But never mind, it IS entertaining! But a bit sad too - I think......

Gonna be just another beatdown received by El FerJoke

Can't wait. The only way for him to go out is on a KO/TKO loss. It will be fitting.
