Hagler was a fighter in every sense of the word. Not only did he give his all during training and fight almost every fight as though it was his last, he worked his way up the hard way, going through the Philadelphia stable of middleweights including Eugene Hart, Bobby Watts, and Bennie Briscoe. It took him over 50 fights to finally secure a world title belt.
People remember him as a come-forward brawler from the Hearns and Mugabi fights. But his skill is very underrated; he was a great counterpuncher, had a laser right jab, a versatile defense that he would adjust based on the style of his opponent, and fantastic timing. And his chin may have been the best in boxing history P4P.
Just an all-around complete fighter.

If anybody wants to see Hagler at his best, I'd suggest his fights against Loucif Hamani, Mustafa Hamsho, and Tony Sibson.

Wow, i'll be honest. That's the first time i saw the Hagler/Hearns fight. Hagler simply wore Hearns down. Hearns was on rubber legs midway through the 2nd.
I've always liked Hagler. I've watched all his career summaries whether that's HBO or Sportscentury. I know he had to work his way up to get a shot at a title. I know that in his first title win, it was in England and he beat up their champ so bad, they threw stuff in the ring. He always felt he was disrespected. I always felt bad for him when SRR didn't give him a rematch. A bitch move by SRR if you ask me. He always came across as a blue collar, hard worker. He never cheated his way to greatness. I guess that's why i love Hopkins. He and Hagler are similiar. Nothing was given to them. They had to earn it.

I'll be honest, i didn't become a hard core boxing fan until about 2003 because i fell in love with RJJ. But prior to that, i was just a casual fan. I love boxing now. I have a lot to make up. :good

I had the opportunity to see him train for about a year in Massachusetts. He was extremely intense in the gym; probably the hardest worker I've ever came across in any profession. There was absolutely no fooling around - he was all business.
I remember he was rocked during a sparring session with Frank "Tiger" Moore. Hagler turned away, put his glove up in the air, and said "hold on a second." Moore turned to Goody, shook his head and smiled as if to say "that's right, I stunned Marvin." Goody just looked at him and said "you're full of shit."

I know. And that tells you how much this meant to him. I can't help but see the similarities between him and Hopkins. Both guys earned their way to the top. Both guys were gym rats and had the disciplined to stay at one weight class for years. And both guys attached their identity to "Middle Weight Champion of the World". That meant everything to them. That was their identity. Both guys are throwbacks.

I voted Hagler/Mugabi as my favorite "rare gem" fight in a thread a while back. What a great fight. Here is my favorite tribute:

Hagler had one of the best jabbing exhibitions I've ever seen, against Tony Sibson (he also jabbed the shit out of Hamsho and Mugabi among others). I'm not too much of a Hagler fan, but he was one great fighter. Very versatile, a complete prize fighter.

He beats him. Bernard will have to fight him...he can't win the way he got robbed in the JT fight. He'd have to fight like he did Trinidad or Joppy. He couldn't just try to beat him, he'd have to try to bury him...which as much as I like Bernard, I must admit he wouldn't pull off.
If he tried any of the holding shit, Marvelous will murder him to the body, create space and throw vicioius combos.

When Marvin Haglar elected to fight Mustafo Hamsho in only his 3rd title defense, I thought he had lost his freaking mind. When he won by TKO in a rather one-sided 11 rounds, i pretty much knew we were looking at a great, great champion.
As for the SRL fight, for years I thought it was a robbery. However, I watched it recently on Ringside Classics, and came away feeling that Ray won. Haglar screwed up and gave away the first 4 rounds.
I have a freind who is in is 80's and a life long boxing fan. He actually saw Robinson fight live several times. According to him Haglar/Robinson would be a candidate for fight of the decade in any decade. That's pretty high praise coming from a guy who watched Sugar Ray Robinson at ringside!

If he tried any of the holding shit, Marvelous will murder him to the body, create space and throw vicioius combos.Hopkins would probably hold the slight inside edge. On the outside, Hagler's jab is th ebest weapon of the two, though Hopkins has a great straight right, good for southpaws. Interesting matchup, pretty much a legit 50/50 fight.
Anyways, Hagler was awesome in his prime, a great boxer, so much more than the brawler he became late due to his diminishing athleticism by that time. Great counter-puncher with very good accuracy, underrated movement and slipping skills, punch placement, and killer instinct.
He was not robbed on my cards against Leonard though.

Haglar was fantastic. First time I saw him was fight #1 against Vito A. People scream that Haglar was ripped off, I thought Haglar should have got the edge but it was a great fight. Seems like the outcome of that fight launched Haglar to a different level as a boxer, can't give the ref. any wiggle room so I'll just have to destroy my opponents. He really did slow down toward the end of his career, and that fight against Mugabi showed. Leonard chose Haglar @ the perfect time and Haglar threw away the first couple rounds by boxing conventional stance. I do not think it was a bad decision with Leonard winning, I had it a draw, but Haglar could have won if he chose to fight a more Marvin Haglar stratedgy
