Hey lads i was just wondering why is swimming good for boxers? I know it works out different muscles but thats all i have heard. Im interested because im going to start doing some laps because its a change from running and we all know running can get a lil boring from time to time.

Thanks

Swimmings great for ur stamina. You can run all u want but its not going to do much to keep ur arms up at the closing rounds of a hard fight. Swimming builds alot of endurance in ur upperbody muscles which u need just as much as endurance in ur legs.

well just keepign afloat takes alot ou tof you. if you are doing nothign in a wimming pool just lieing there then you get out you will be tired as hell.

i heard though that angelo dundee says it creates the wrong type of muscle.

but to be honest it's not like you are goign to forget sparring or hitting the heavy bag for swimming.

swimming is a different kind of work, it's just superb for general toning and developing your stamina, it works all of your main muscle groups and helps heal sore joints (no real risk of pulling a muscle or anything the like under water)

Well I know, that was an overenthusiastic statement of mine.
What I mean is, there is hardly any risk

I hate boxing shoes since they don't have any kind of insole. Because of that I installed a pronation insole. It feels great especially when I jump rope and other times I put a lot of pressure on the feet.

Shoulder muscles are easy to damage if you are not careful when swimming. A few years ago I swam after my weight workout. Bad idea since I had about six months of shoulder rehab after that stunt.

I would hate to work the shoulders even more after a boxing workout. Because of my past I would fear damaging them again.

Probably because you have a good foot print. I on the other hand am required to deal with flat feet, over pronation issue.

you aint the only one, on both of my feet I have cracked skin right where my third toe meets the ball of my feet
epsom salt and lotion are what I am trying
also I think wearing houseshoes with no socks when you are outside is bad

as far as swimming, I am going swimming tomorrow
I tried to go last week but they told me I had to wear shorts or trunks to get in the pool so Ill do that this time
I heard that rocky marciano used to practice his uppercuts underwater
and I can really see practicing body shots under water would be great for techniqe and poweer

Shadowboxing in a pool is something both Ali and Marciano did.

Juan Diaz isn't the only boxer who's an avid swimmer; Dempsey did a lot of open water swimming too.

Road work is a poison to me. Whenever I start doing it, I start falling apart - ankles, feet, knees, hips, back.

Swimming has always been there for me. I joined a team this week for the first time in 8 years and I really can't put into words how great it feels. I'm waiting till Saturday of next week to step on the scale and find out how much weight I've lost in my first 2 weeks.

I highly recommend joining some sort of swimming team with a structured workout. Just plodding along doing laps for an extended period of time will get boring quick and won't do as much for you. You burn a lot more calories on a team, with a structured workout, and trying to stay on pace.

long pants?
Board shorts (surfer style swimsuit) should be more than enough drag when you're swimming, why would you want to wear anything else?

If I go swimming as in workout (as opposed to hitting the beach) I wear something like this. I realize not everyone is as awesome looking as me but still :D

Sure, some people (not me) don't like people looking at their crotch... but legs? That's weird man. Why? Or is it something irrational? :think

If you really go swimming instead of just fucking around in the pool that is not practical. Sure if you go to the beach that's ok, but we're talking about working out, at least I assume. Way to much friction.

I changed into shorts last week so I could swim at the pool
and I am big enough that I can overcome an irrational fear............ but back to the original topic; I will be doing more punch drills underwater than actual swimming but will swim a few laps also

The pants or the board shorts?
I swim on a team and I wear a big, baggy, bright green, 80-style swimsuit (complete with mesh liner) over a pair of Tyr Jammers to add to my drag so I'm working harder.

Once again I want to suggest joining a team or taking a workout from someplace like Swimming magazine; instead of just doing straight laps - it's a much better workout and it won't get nearly as boring.
