View Full Version : JMM is a superbly underrated puncher

Pac comes in unhesitantly against Morales and Barrera. But against Marquez, Pac is so concious of getting hit.
I think JMM is one vastly underrated puncher. He probably hits just as hard as Pac, only he is not going for the KO always.
His handspeed is also very underrated.

pac started hesitating when he got tagged in the end of the 2nd rnd...
for me jmm is either underrated puncher or pac gone soft from fame, money, women etc...

Marquez has very good power with the straight right and uppercuts from either hand . He's not that powerful with his hooks though .
Marquez's power was something I factored in when I tipped him to win , he is indeed an underated puncher .

thats not so much cause Marquez is a better pucher than Barrera and Morales as much as him recognizing what Pacquiao is doing and using his positioning to control Pac and prevent him from charging in.
but you're right, Marquez is a very good puncher. Especially considering the great shape he was in yesterday.
Pac stopped charging in cause he realised when he charged in the was not landing and getting tageed he had to adjust to that and did a great job

Marquez is just a superb counter-puncher.Pacman hasn't gone soft, he took some vicious shots last night and came back firing as usual

jmm is a very good puncher but pac did take his best shots just like he took the best shots of barrera and morales.
now, i'm not sure who the best puncher between jmm, erik and mab is but i'm leaning towards erik especially after he KD'd a natural lightweight in diaz.

Morales and Barrera combined in 5 fights couldn't hurt Pac as many times as JMM did in two.
hmm... i think it appears worst than it really is. pac is mostly off-balanced due to throwing his lunging straight left when jmm counters him.

Nah...he doesn't punch half as hard as Manny. On the other hand, he is a counterpuncher, so he punches you while you are diving forward towards his punch, so it hurts a lot more than if he was just punching you while you were stationary, or backing up.

What I noticed throughout the fight is that JMM has better combination handspeed than Pac.
.....and Marquez was a tad quicker to get off than Pac was.
....so yes, these are very underrated qualities of JMM.
Another thing I noticed is that JMM is actually physically stronger than Pac, he'd easliy outmanuever Pac on the inside to gain angles and then physically push Pac back.
Marquez is stronger, but Pac has the better one shot snap on his punch. Pac clearly hits harder with a single shot, that left hand from Pac is lethal, no doubt when thrown with the force that Pac throws it.
.....and Patsys, you're one of the very few Pac fans in this forum that did'nt want this rematch to take place. You're a huge Pac fan, and I have no doubt you judged with some bias.
.....but you're also a reasonable poster, who I think will at one point in the near future admit that JMM deserved this victory.
The many Pac fans in this forum are known to be hillariously unreasonable when it comes to assesing Pac....for them on the average to have Pac narrowly beating JMM and many stating that it could have gone either way.......
Judging from their history of unreasonableness, I think it is clear that everyone in this forum who knows even an ounce of boxing knows who truly deserved to have their hand raised last night!
The effort was there from both fighters. They could'nt have provided any more than what they did. They both maxed out on there effort, and to that they both deserve accolades.
.....but honestly, actual Pac hardcore lunatics saying that the fight could have gone either way?????
Yes Patsys, you might not admit it at the moment, but you and I both know who won last nights fight!:deal :yep :bbb

JMM doesn't punch as hard as Pacquiao, but his accuracy is better as is his positioning. He is sharper than both Barrera and Morales, but not as sharp as his brother IMO.

Pac did'nt fall nearly as off balance as he did in their first fight, but still got skillfully and stylistically dominated in both, in fact, because Pac was'nt as wild this time, JMM was able to land just as much and with more force.
JMM domintated the rounds in this fight with more force than he did in their first fight!

What also need to be mentioned in that fight is Pac's chin and heart - 2nd to none.

Pacquiao is hesitant because he knows how accurate JMM is with his combos . . . once a punch landed expected another two or three to hit.
That's what happened in the second round . . . that's a three punch combination. And he also knows JMM has a very good chin.

Your one of the minorities then who thought JMM dominated Pac. But I'll take you up on your offer. Here's my scorecards I posted on 2 other threads already, I'm just gonna re-post it here:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
After rewatching the fight again(coz of Pay-Per-View), and watching the fight thoroughly. I had it 114-113 for Pac. But as I've said over and over again, this was so close that I have NO problem at all if some people scored it for JMM. The 11th was so close that it couldve gone either way, but I scored it for JMM. The 12th defo went to JMM. But I though Pac did enough on the rest of the fight to win it ever-so-slightly. His straight left was accurate, his counter-punching has improved along with his defense(honestly he was blocking alot of JMM's shots it was shocking). Honestly how anyone can say that JMM dominated the fight or how it was a robbery is beyond me.
Here's my scorecards:
1. Pac - 10, JMM - 9
2. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
3. Pac - 10, JMM - 8
4. Pac - 10, JMM - 9
5. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
6. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
7. Pac - 10, JMM - 9
8. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
9. Pac - 10, JMM - 9
10. Pac - 10, JMM - 9
11. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
12. Pac - 9, JMM - 10
Final Score: 114-113 Pac.
I noticed in the RBR thread, there were alot of people who scored the 7th round to JMM. It was so close, but for me JMM started strong hitting Pac with straight right leads and counters, but I thought Pac was the one who finished the round strong. By the middle of the round, Pac started hitting JMM with straight left after sraight left after straight left, almost at will in fact(if you guys get the chance to watch it again, you'll see what I mean no BS). So I gave that to Pac. I also gave Pac the 1st round because while JMM landed 1 very clean shot, that was actually the only punch JMM landed cleanly, while Pac landed more shots. They weren't as clean as that straight right from JMM, but were still clean enough.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So in summary, I had scored rounds 1,3,4,7,9,10, for Pac and rounds 2,5,6,8,11,12 for JMM. With the final score of 114-113 Pac. The KD was the X-factor for Pac winning. If Pac didn't KD JMM, I would have scored the bout for JMM because he was actually winning the 3rd round up until that KD.
Now lets see how you actually pick apart my analysis with your "objective" analysis.
And you must be delusional if you actually think the Pac fans where the only ones who thought it could go either way, alot of the most respectable posters in this forum scored the fight for JMM but had NO problems at all that Pac won, because it was THAT close.
Again divac, don't fall into that Pac-fanatic trap. I warned you. Your getting too emotional for JMM recently. Clear signs of nuthuggery, that one. Oh, and I'm gonna bring this up again once someone posts the whole fight in Youtube or any other video sharing site to prove my point further that it was one of the closest fights, if not the closest fight, of the last decade.

Pac's chin is certainly top notch. I dont think either MAB or Erik Morales could have sustained the punishment handed out to Pac without getting stopped of at least going down.
Talk about heart, God, both JMM and Pac showed what it was all about!

As I understand it, what was said was Pac's already scheduled to go up to 135 already.
He'll be vacating his 130 belt so a 130 rematch will never happen again. He wont be defending the title.
But maybe both sides would agree to set a 135 showdown, after Manny is finished with his first lightweight fight.

Pac has said no, but in response, JMM made it clear that he'd fight Pac at as high as 140 lbs if thats what it took!
After this controversy, I dont know what Pac could do to avoid JMM without coming out looking like he's scared of JMM.
For JMM to say that he'd fight Pac at as high as 140 lbs if he wished, that has got to put the fear of God in Pac's mind, for him to ponder, what the hell am I going to do to avoid him.
The way I see it, nobody is going to care to see Pac fight David Diaz if its not on free HBO.
So either Pac fights Juan Diaz, Nate Campbell, or he's going to have no choice but to fight JMM again!

Yeah, but seeing how easily JMM was able to get his punches off on Pac, I got to figure that Arum is not dumb enough to match Pac again with JMM until he shows significant signs of decline in his coming fights.
.....once that happens, I think Arum will start to be open and vocal about it.
I said all last year that this matchup had to be made before JMM turned 35.
Marquez is 34 and will turn 35 soon.
I dont care how skilled you are, a fighter not capable of fighting 3 minutes of every round is not going to beat this version of Manny Pacquiao.
JMM can still do that, but will he be able to do that past a year from now is a monumental question mark!
Somebody in Pac's camp said before the fight that he'd wish they wait till Marquez was older......I think that maybe now they are going to wait for the signs to be their and there is telling and significant decline in Marquez reflexes and stamina!
If Pac does'nt want a fight now, Marquez should fight either Valero, Guzman, or move on to 135 lbs and haunt Pac by beating him to Juan Diaz!
Diaz is tough, but he got handled pretty easily by a lesser skilled Nate Campbell. I think JMM can take Juan Diaz!
Diaz does'nt punch nearly as hard as Pac, and JMM is way over his league in skill!

Where'd you hear that? I dont think I've heard any one from the MP camp say that.
Anyway, I just got a quick adrenaline boost reading the other possible match-ups at 130 and 135. :yep
The promoters need to set the fights quick. 2008's gonna be another amazing boxing year if they do that.

I never touched the TV. I knew it was gonna be an ad marathon disguised as a boxing coverage.
I heard it was up until 4pm or so. Maybe later than that. :conf
I just stayed here on ESB all afternoon.
thank god for ppv and thank him further for having an uncle in working for the cable company

i just think he is much stronger than the last time they fought. manny's improvement in skill was negated by jmm improvement in power IMO and that made the fight even more beautiful
JMM is a big guy, you can easily see from his body build, his head and bone structure. Among the fab 4, he is the naturally bigger guy, followed by MAB, then Pac then Morales.
I think JMM can move up to 135 and still look every bit as good as he was at the lower weights.

So either Pac fights Juan Diaz, Nate Campbell, or he's going to have no choice but to fight JMM again!
......or maybe Pac will just go all in and fight Ricky Hatton in Manchester England and collect 20 million dollars as he gets KTFO!
Pac actually said a 3rd fight is a possibility, but may not be immediate as he is already scheduled a match with David Diaz.
I would like to see a 3rd fight. Although Pac did not live up to my expectations, I still think he will learn from his mistakes and improve.
