I think the difference is that British fighters are more prepared to fight in an open air arena - hence the sale of 50000 tickets, and previous high selling events at Wembley, and Old Trafford.
The British fans are also very loyal to their men, particularly as we have only two 'marquee' names at present, whilst the Americans have several. Also, the Americans are very fickle - one minute a fighter can be the second coming, the next, he sucks cock!

British boxing is booming at this time, and this proves it. With Calzaghe, Haye, Froch and Khan all good ticket sellers also, the sport is in a very healthy state there.:good

I'm gobsmacked by these sales and have had to do some desperate scrambling around to sort myself out with a ticket. 55,000 for a fight like this is remarkable and they think they could have sold 75,000!
Whatever the sport (Football, Rugby, Cricket, Boxing), the British are the best at consistently getting off their arses to support their heroes, particularly when it comes to travelling overseas to see them in action.
Rugby Union has made massive strides in recent years with the creation of the Premiership, revamping of Twickers and the WC win. Rugby League has swapped to summer fixtures with the creation of the Super League and cricket has ambititious plans to get the majority of County venues up to international standards. The time is now ripe for boxing to undergo a similar renaissance.
These sales underline the potential for boxing in Great Britain, if it is handled properly (ticket prices, tv deals, marketing etc) and the punters are given the fights they want, then the sport can become massive again and really start to challenge the status of football.

I agree completly, and with their amateur success of recent times, things haven't looked brighter in a long time. It's now up to BBC and ITV to address the demand for more boxing on terrestrial TV.

What's the largest capacity stadium we have in the UK?
I think any superfight involving Calzaghe or Hatton could fill it easy. I don't think Haye could at the moment but that may change once he moves to heavy.

It'd be interesting to see how many tickets Pacman could sell in Manila for a big fight.
Also, didn't Chavez sell out the Azteca for a fight about 15 years ago?

Not sure it would ever really challenge football. Ever since WWII footy has been the national sport and it shows no signs of decreasing in popularity (quite the opposite). But taking footy out of the equation, yeah if it is handled correctly we could see it take off in the UK and actually get some headline and TV coverage!
Think the national newspapers need to give british boxing more column inches though. I mean, I buy the mirror every day and other than Barry McGuigan's column on a weekend there is no coverage at all!! The local papers in Livepool cover when a local lad fights (whether that be Pro/Amateur) but the national papers need to include articles on British fights to raise the profile a bit!
Bit of a chicken and egg situation though I suppose... they wont cover it until it is popular enough and it wont be popular enough until they cover it...

Are you a boxing fan or a fool. Because any boxer that can sell over 50,000 tickets in a few days should be applauded by all boxing fans, irrespective of nationality.

Ricky Hatton could sell out any stadium in the UK, the opponent is merely a minor detail, in terms of ticket sales.
FFS, he used to fill the MEN Arena fighting the likes of Stephen Smith, so fighting a half decent name in Lazcano is bound to create interest.
If he was fighting a 'marquee' name - DLH, FMJ or Pacman, I suspect Eastlands wouldn't be big enough, it would have to go to Wembley.
Frank Bruno once filled Wembley with about 50000 fans, and in the grand scheme of things, Hatton is a much bigger name worldwide, better P4P fighter - therefore one would expect, a bigger turnout.

Easy to sell a product to?
No - easy to capitalise on an already popular market - not so easy to establish a new product OR maintain its popularity long term.
Example-
Amir Khan is still to satisfy his critics;
Naseem Hamed packed out stadiums but now you have to order his DVDs online;
Hatton could sell a bottle of his sweat for £25.00 a pop!
Nothing wrong with supporting your fighter/football team/favourite band etc
most probably 49,000 sold to ticket tout agency`s.

Thats a BIG number!! Not sure if he'd be able to get that many outside of the UK.
Think if a rematch with PBF or maybe a mega fight with ODH/Pac was held in the UK (and there was a stadium big enough) then possibly he may get close. But I think 70,000ish would be about the most he could get otherwise.
hatton v dlh or pacman - if pacman/dlh was marketed well enough, could get 100000+. personally i think calzaghe v jones jr would be the biggest crowd puller in boxing - if held in britain. especially if it was calz last fight and he was still undefeated.

Yeah true, but there isnt a stadium big enough to beat JCC's record in the UK. JV v RJJ would reel them in though

Roy Jones Jr. went on record as being envious of MMA fighters where you aren't considered garbage if you lost a fight. In the Japanese "Pride FC" events it mattered more if you put on an exciting fight than if you lost. Fans didn't hold it against you if you put yourself at risk going all out.

The pressure is on Hatton to KO him, if he doesnt and prodcues a Urango type fight, a lot wont be happy with what they see, its a gamble especially with Lazcano who has a solid chin and can punch, albelt at 135, and the fact he has been inactive.
