View Full Version : Which fighters out there are an honest threat to Wlad's title?

In my opinion, the only two legitimate threats are Chagaev and Peter.
Peter obviously because he's shown he can at least come close to finishing the job, although he will certainly need to improve his gameplan beforehand.
Chagaev IMO is the real hidden talent in the division. He isn't that big, isn't that fast, but he is a MASTER southpaw and does so many things in the ring from that stance. I can see him honestly bothering Wlad.

I agree about Chagaev, he appears to be an inteligent fighter with good chin and decent power. Peter on the other hand, I am quite pessimistic, I need to see him against a quality opposition before making a final judgement. The first time they fought Klitschko was completely timid due to his fresh loss to Brewster. With a rather gained confidence he will outbox Peter's ears off again.
In a year or two I would give Povetkin a good chance to beat Klitschko though.

It's Wlad, so you never know for sure, but yeah, Chagaev and Peter seem to be the only real threats. But I'd still pick Wlad to beat them both.

Ruslan Chagaev
Samuel Peter
Alexander Povetkin - in a year or two

I would say
1) Chagaev
2) Peter
3) Ibragimov
4) Valuev
Although in the long run, Alexander Povetkin will be the greatest threat to Wlad.

I have a question...
Why would anyone want Peter beating Klitschko? Seriously why??
It would be terrible for the boxing division.. because we all know Klitschko has a million zillion times the boxing skills Peter could ever dream of having.. and that if Peter DID win it would be on a lucky punch landing and knocking Klitschko down/out. I'm sure some Wlad haters would love that.. but in hindsight.. in the big picture of it all.. do you really want Sam Peter as "the heavyweight champ"? An extremely limited fighter, who can't even speak english, with the most annoying fucking management in recent history (Duva and co). He's like a different version of Lamon Brewster.. all punch and chin, no skills.
That said.. noone right now as an honest shot at being Wladimir.. the only person I could see doing it is his own brother and that aint happening so.. :hat

I was just talking to my dad about this, people keep saying Sam Peter has a chance but thats bullshit, he isnt a new fighter or hasnt improved since the first fight with Wlad, hell all he did against Toney the second time was fight differently he didnt transform into Muhammad Ali like some people are saying:nut :patsch.
At the moment I really dont see anyone out there with a realistic chance of beating Wlad, I thought Brewster had the perfect style and ability to do it but Wlad proved me wrong and not having seen the fight yet im guessing Lamon bought hes best game to the ring. Wlad is the man until proven otherwise.
1. Briggs
2. Peter
3. Chagaev
4. Sultan

Nah, I think Peter was a vastly improved boxer in the second fight. He placed and timed his shots better, he seemed quicker, better stamina, decent jab. In their first, all peter was, was an ugly slugger. he could be outboxed incredibly easily. Now, he may not be anything special as a boxer, but he has a good grip of the basics.
I think Wlad is also a better fighter. More relaxed, better defence and more open to other punches other than his jab and cross.
Both men have imrpoved, but Wlad is still by far the better boxer. If they fought again, I'd expect Peter to be stopped late.

Then why did he lose to Mike Mollo and Louis Monaco?

he would be in much better shape and would take it more seriously vs. Wlad. I think Wlad beats everyone except the fighters I listed.

I agree with you that Chagaev, Ibragimov, Peter, Briggs, and Povetkin have shots at Wlad, albeit, very small shots, but Kevin McBride? This guy beat a washed up Mike Tyson and then was KOd in 2 by Mike Mollo. McBride is no where near world class and would be bombed out by Wladimir and Chagaev, Ibragimov, Povetkin, Briggs, and Peter. I'll give you heart, but he lacks the skill to beat Wlad.

I disagree I thought he showed a great jab and right hand against Tyson. He just needs to be in shape. I think the early rounds are dangerous for Wlad but McBride stops him with a right hand.

Peter, right now that's about it. Most likely he beats just about anyone else out there.

No one right now. Peter has the ol punchers chance, but Wlad is far beyond him in skills, and I think he could KO him the second time around. Pvetkin keeps being brought up, but the kid is still a prospect, and needs at least ten more fights.
I don't know that any living land mammal can remove Sam Peter from his senses. After watching him get peppered in the first Klitschko fight (that late round hook would've KOed a small horse) and a few good shots from Toney, this guy looks like a tough KO. I think a rematch would play out very similarly to the first bout.

Right now I would have to say that Peter has the best chance.

Additionally, while I know he's been ruled out lately...Valuev would probably put up a good fight.
Great chin, decent power, and we've yet to see Wlad fight without the height advantage. Wlad certainly has the better game from long range but IMO he is still vulnerable for that right hand...

If Valuev could learn how to actually use his height and reach to his advantage, then he might possibly give Wladimir some trouble. But unfortunately for Valuev he has NOT learned to use the advantages he has, but if he ever did then I'd give him a good shot.. especially since he appears to have a good chin.

1. technical skill. (Most Wlad opponents don't have any credible amateur experience like he does)
2. good punch (ditto for most Wlad opponents. Brewster's power overrated)
3. Speed
4. stamina (important for following through on a gameplan).
5. correct corner to counter Steward's advice (very key).
Um.. do these apply to Chagaev or Ibragimov? Or both? :huh

You are correct but in my opinion Valuev needs s-p-e-e-d and that's a hard trait to add.

To do that McBride would have to be really diciplined--like he was for the Tyson fight. His"for all of Ireland toasts" would have to sub-stituded for downright hard work...Aw,screw it, McBride will never be a threat ,he likes the pubs too much.
Nobody can say his win over Tyson was VERY impressive. I still dont know why he hasnt gotten a title shot IMO hes the 3rd best HW in the world.

Can't see anyone beating him right now, especially after Peters pathetic performance last night. I'd pick VITLAY 10 times out of 10 against WALD but that ain't going to happen, obviously.
